Update app button opening app instead of updating

Using a 5S on 7.0.4. I have multiple app updates available in the store but the "Update All" button in greyed out and when I click on any of the individual app "Update" buttons, instead of updating the app, the "Update" button launches that app instead. Never had this problem before and it just started in the last day or so. Tried closing all programs, rebooting and none of them are fixing the problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SOLVED

Thanks a million!

It took me a few quick trys but I finally was able to tap the update all button. About 3 started updating and the rest finally had the "update" button instead of the "open" button.

Now all is updated and the counter is clear.

I have the same problem starting today, iPhone 6 iOS 8.2. When I go the "Updates" tab for the first time "Update All" is enabled for a very short time and then disables and all the "Update" buttons change to "Open".

Workaround:

  • Force-close the App Store app
  • Open the App Store app
  • The app starts at the tab "Featured"
  • Now comes the tricky part: press the "Updates" tab and immediately the "Update All" button. Apps should now be updating.

I've been having the same problem on my iPad. In my app store it had 5 apps requiring an update but it was opening them instead as mentioned before. After a bit of playing around on the device i found i had a software update but was unable to perform it as i didnt have enough free storage. So i decided to go through and clear out my photos to clear some storage. After doing so i went in to app store to check one last time and im glad that i did because the apps started to download. I believe that the problem is storage for many if not all of the cases above.

This is evident when Paul Johns wrote "I'm not updating due to hearing that it runs sluggish on an iphone 4s, plus i have 500 apps installed. I'm not risking that a lot of these older games i have simply wont work."

He has 500 apps on his phone. Does that not hint that it might be a storage problem?

Hope this helps guys

I like to update my old iphone this way, but even after updating and syncing.. the App Store Icon still says all my apps need updating.

I have even rebooted my phone and it still says needs updating. My wifi is not working so I prefer to sync with itunes but it is not working.

And everything takes for ever... Open to all suggestions.

Wow! This issue has been out here since at least 2014. I'm having it with my iPad now.

1. Software is up to date

2. Tried shutting off automatic updates

3. Tried rebooting--reseting device

4. Tried force-closing app store app and returning to it quickly

All of my (12) applications showing needs for updates display "open" instead of "update."

I've read through this forum and nothing suggested here works but the fact that it's been a known problem since 2014 is pretty telling. Thanks Apple.
