Q: iPad 2 and iOS 8.0.2 Problems

For all iPad 2 owners, this is an important solution for you! These problems result from long-term use, continuous upgrades, corrupted files and various glitches that happen over this long term use. You just need to get your iPad 2 back to FACTORY FRESH CONDITION to start out clean!

 

Here's one person's solution which will help a lot of iPad 2 users!

 

SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:

 

I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.

 

Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.

 

THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!

 

To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)

 

Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

    Still not solved  but a LOT  BETTER

    twice in four days I have had the No Service back  and now it requires a restart to come back unlike before when toggle cell network search was enough or toggle find my iPhone or...

     

    However:  My home button now works a lot better!! I had thought it was damaged but apparently not!

    Also iPad is faster after a clean clean install

     

    Clearly the secret was to back up to iCloud so that only settings and data went up... I had considerable trouble with downloading some apps , others were really easy. all good now except for No Service

    I did factory refresh (FORCED to as the iOS 8 installation failed!) on my iPad 2, and the restore from my backup has taken three days to finally get it partially done. 

     

    Yes ...partially done.   iTunes crashed once the progress bar hit the right-hand edge of restoring the backup.  The iPad 2 then went ahead and did its Apple Logo thing with the progress bar, and when I finally saw the iPad 2 screen, I ONLY had the Apple apps, and NONE of the hundreds of installed apps ...NOTHING synced over ...yes, likely because iTunes crashed.

     

    The Factory Fresh bit you are so thrilled about, is a nightmare for me.   Now iTunes crashes as soon as it tries to mount the drive as it evidently doesn't match iTunes files now.

     

    Three days I have spent on this.   Why I tried to update to this iOS 8 is beyond me.   You would think Apple would have learned from the iOS 7 install fiasco, and this is as bad.   Honestly, worse.

     

    I have spent three days just getting this far, and I will scream if I have to do Recovery, followed by Restore again, as it took well over 20 attempts just to get this far.   DAYS of my time have been wasted on this when I have, like everyone, tons of other things I need to get done and I'm dealing with this newest Apple iOS update fiasco and STRESS.

    Thank you for posting this solution, Star Traveler!  Now if we could just get people to do a search before posting the same issue over and over again, they could see light at the end of the tunnel and we would see fewer repeat questions.  The above poster is an example of upgrade gone bad--with hundreds of apps, he should have anticipated a possible problem.  Though I did not have any problem with the upgrade, I do appreciate the time you have taken to help those who have had iPad 2 upgrade problems.  Thanks again!

    Well, I'll delve into this from a strategic standpoint and not an "item by item" basis. First, I'm going to assume that you do have a complete backup. So, that's going to be a starting point. Then, next ... from a strategic standpoint, you always make sure you have the current version of iTines in your computer. Then make sure you deactivate any and all antivirus and/or firewall software on your computer - and you're only going to do this for the duration of this process (you can put it right back). If your router has some kind of firewall, turn it off (again, it's a temporary measure). Then make sure you restart your computer and start clean and don't run any other programs. Some computers have the ability to run a clean system without the regular load of add-ons; if you can, do that, then that would be good ... otherwise, don't worry. This is to just make sure your iTunes program runs smooth and efficiently.

     

    Then, if you're having problems with your iPad and the process you've been doing ... you might have to do Recovery Mode ...

    The thing you want to do is to reset this to the Factory Default setup and not load your backup on just yet (keep your backup safe for later). What you're going to do is establish whether your iPad can run and operate properly in its clean and pristine state, without your files on it. If we can establish that, yes, this can be done, then we know that there is probably something on the backup that may be causing the trouble. On the other hand, if you do see problems in its pristine and "factory state", then ther may be some hardware problems. At that point (if you have problems in its pure state), you would want to take it to Apple and showing them that "in its factory fresh condition" it's not working right. Others have reported here that Apple has replaced the hardware, when it is not working right. In that particular case, that's what you would want.

     

    SO ... this is a troubleshooting process, in which you are trying to eliminate things, to arrive at what the problem really is. One person reported here that Apple had identified a particular app he was using as the cause of all his problems. They said to get rid of it. When he did, the problem disappeared!

     

    Anyway, what you are wanting to "get to" is an iPad that is set to the factory setup which is operating without any trouble. Once you "get there", then you can proceed to the backup you set aside earlier, and then we'll hope that it's not some app in your collection which is fouling you up. Let me know when you get to that step.

    Am so happy to find this fix, nearly in tears at thought of Ipad being practically useless.  Just checking through your walk though.  I updated my ipad to IOS8 on my Mac , so following your advice, I've installed Itunes on a 'virgin' windows laptop. I've checked your info as per the above comment about where to download IOS 8 in itunes.

    Am assuming I back up to icloud  and then  wipe ipad BEFORE installing the ios 8 to itunes to prevent duplicating the problem?

    I backed up to both iCloud and to my Mac Laptop.

    When I got through the iOS 8 install and it asked if I wanted to restore it didn't list the icloud backup on the dropdown list. It did list the backup to the Laptop and a bunch of earlier iphone and ipad backups.

    :-(

    So I am now restoring from the laptop and will start over (backing up to iCloud and reinstalling iOS8 and seeing if the iCloud backup appears this time.

    Or do you have any other suggestions?

    You can use the iCloud backup as it backs up most of the stuff, but there are some exceptions. If a TV show is no longer online, you won't get it back with iCloud. If a song is no longer online, you won't get it back with iCloud. If you have some of your own books and documents in iBooks, which were not purchased in the store, you won't get them back. Those are some exceptions and why the iTunes backup should also be an alternate backup for safety. But, for the most part, apart from those exceptions, the iCloud backup will work.

     

    Now when you do the factory default setup, you can test it out, when it is done, before you reload your backup. There are some instances where people have found that the problem resides in the backup itself, in that one or more things done with the restoring of the backup will actually be the problem. That's a possibility, but you won't know that until you get there and see for yourself.

    The iCloud backup will be listed on the iOS device, when going to iCloud. See the Apple Support document regarding the iCloud backup and restoring. The procedure for iTunes is different and is to itself.

    GOOD GRIEF!      When and where does Apple inform someone about the iCloud backup limitations???
    If I restore from Icloud - is there a way to automatically layer back in (as a last step) the items that are missing from the iCloud backup from the iTunes backup? Will syncing do this?

     

    Thank goodness you mentioned it! I would have lost a bunch and probably not known why or how!!
