Uverse and Time Capsule

I believe this is a question that primarily relates to how to properly configure my ATT Uverse modem/router.

I have an ATT Uverse modem as the primary internet connection. I also have the most current version of Apple's time capsule (upright model). Both are working fine together, but the Time capsule is not "extending" my wifi in the area of the house where I have it installed. I thought that by hooking up a time capsule in bridge mode, I would be able to generate a greater signal in my office, which is far away from the Uverse modem/router.

Does anyone know what settings in the ATT Uverse page I need to change to enhance the wifi connection in the office using Time Capsule? Is this even possible? I have read about putting ATT Uverse in bridge mode, and making the Time Capsule the primary base station - but will the ATT Uverse still act to extend wifi in the area where it is installed? I need both devices to extend wifi to their respective areas, and may ultimately need an Airport Express in a third area, so the configuration that would best accomodate all 3 wifi access points would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Having the TC in the same room as the Uverse router will not do anything to improve the wireless of the Uverse.

In fact, if you leave both the TC and Uverse in the same room, you should turn off the wireless function on one of them to help minimize the chances of wireless interference that will likely occur when two routers are both configured to provide the same network in the same area.

Locating the TC in another area of the house where you do need improved wireless coverage will allow you to "extend" the range of the network.

The rub here is that the TC must remain connected at all times to the Uverse router using an Ethernet connection, so you will likely be pulling some wires through the house to accomplish that goal.

Some users who cannot run Ethernet cabling though the house have had some success using Ethernet Over Powerline (EOP) adapters, which send an coded Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerless in the home.

The theory with EOP is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters. Unfortunately in practice, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest. So, it would be wise to understand the store's return policy before you buy if you are considering an EOP product.

Before today's installation of Uverse I had the following: DSL coming in to a little silver Motorola modem. Modem connected to previous generation of Airport Extreme. Out of this Airport Extreme I had three things: 1) 70' of ethernet cable connecting an airport express in a separate building (my shop); 2) 50' of ethernet cable connecting a Time Capsule three rooms away from base Airport Extreme; 3) shared printer. Everything worked fine. One network and moving from one end of the house or even into the other building (shop) did not appear to create a roaming situation. At least my phone always had a signal without requiring on/off Wi/Fi toggling.

Uverse was installed today. So far, I have left the configuration and cables the same with the exception of connecting the Airport Extreme to the new Uverse router instead of to the old Motorola modem. How best can I setup & connect the Airport Extreme, Airport Express & Time Capsule to duplicate what I had before getting Uverse? Right now the Airport Extreme is blinking yellow and I don't have internet signal in the shop or in the room with the Time Capsule.

My setup is similar to hmnetwork's.

I've got a three story house & the media utility box is on the 3rd floor. All ethernet, coax, and home alarm wires terminate there.

Uverse comes into the house through an ARRIS NVG589 modem/router, provided by AT&T. That NVG589 has 4 "out" ports. The first two out ports are connected to a Netgear 8 port switch and a wireless access point, respectively. The 2 remaining "out" ports on the NVG589 and the Netgear switch appear to feed ethernet jacks scattered throughout the house.

I'm using a MBPr Mountain Lion with the AirPort Utility (6.3.1) to set up the TC.

I've got a TimeCapsule that I bought, new, in 2013. It's not the latest model, it's the horizontal one. It's running firmware 7.6.4. The TC and the main Uverse DVR unit are on the 1st floor. I'm feeding the TC with an ethernet jack and I feed the main Uverse DVR unit from the first of 3 "out" ports on the TC.

Initially, I had the NVG589 wireless "active" with the default Uverse configuration. Following the information in this thread, I renamed the NVG589 SSID & changed the wireless security configuration to match my TC. Right after I did that however, I simply disabled the wireless on the NVG589.

(As an aside and an explanation for why I disabled wireless on the NVG589, I've also got a couple of Airport Express units & I believe I'd like to use the TC as the main wireless router with the AEs as "extenders" on each floor, so I don't think I need a 4th wireless device. The AEs are not plugged in so we can eliminate them from the immediate discussion. I'll add one or both of them later & if I run into channel issues between the TC + 2 AEs, I'll work that out later. For now, it's just the NVG589 without wireless & the TC with wireless.)

When I look at the TC in AirPort Utility, the Network Mode = "Create a wireless network" and the router mode is "Off (Bridge Mode)".

I can see the TC if I'm connected to it via physical ethernet cable. I can connect to the internet & the main DVR Uverse box is working just fine.

However, if I disconnect the physical cable, everything goes to ****. Sometimes AirPort Utility says it can't find the TC. When it shows the TC, sometimes it says it doesn't have Internet connectivity (yellow dot for Internet in AirPort Utility). HOWEVER, I can still get rather sporadic, quite slow internet connectivity via wifi.

Any idea what's wrong?

Any idea what's wrong?

No, I cannot say anything is wrong in your setup.

Please give me screenshots of the TC setup.. I think you will need to pass me fairly detailed ones.

So click the TC in the airport utility.. and give me that shot.. click edit on that one.

And give me the wireless tab and internet tab and let me see the setup.

It might be prosaic but I have a distrust of the 7.6.4 firmware in certain situations.

I would like you to factory reset the TC.. and then downgrade its firmware to 7.6.1

Downgrade is simple... hold down the option key and click the version number 7.6.4 in the summary screen above and you will get the options of which firmware you want to use.

When you are chasing down wireless issues.. are you sure the computer isn't the problem.. Yosemite did a horrible job when you upgrade install on a computer.. and even clean install can go wrong.

So there could be nothing wrong at all with your setup.. test on several devices. Is wireless not working on all of them?

When you do the setup after the factory reset.. use different wireless names for the two bands.. then set fixed channels..

Try 11, 8, 6 for 2.4ghz

And try 36 and 149 for 5ghz.

Apple have built in wireless diagnostics to help you.

The utility in particular can be very helpful to discover if you have poor wireless connections.

I'm still on Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

I'll try to take a look at the diagnostics tool, but suspect that isn't the problem. Prior to Uverse, this TC was connected to a WiMax/4G modem & worked like a champ, as recently as 2 weeks ago. We got Uverse & now I'm trying to integrate it to landline connections.

I've got a Win7 laptop that can get on the wireless, but still has no internet connectivity while connected wireless.

Screen shots attached are when I'm connected via physical ethernet wire, so visual indicators are not for wireless.

I've also attached a screen shot of the Wireless Options info from the Wireless tab. I don't have the 5 GHz enabled.

I've got some TimeMachine backups on the TC. Will factory reset make it difficult to fit into that timeline?

There is nothing wrong with your setup I can see.

A factory reset and downgrade of firmware will do nothing to damage your files.

It is almost essential after a major network change around.. ie replacing the main modem setup.

Whenever that happens the apple routers need a full reset.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.

Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.

2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. with a bridged TC such as your setup.. you will need to do this via the main router..

Or use static IP mentioned above.

Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting

This is actually a very good setup as the wireless is controlled better from the TC and you can then better extend wireless which is all fully controlled by the TC.. if you have issues with the setup method just ask.

Never mind the factory reset question. It's done & I'm now downgraded to 7.6.1.

My issue appears to be resolved.

Is there firmware I should stay away from for the AirPort Express units?

Ok, so the downgrade plus factory reset fixed it.

The firmware is pretty much locked on the latest Gen2 Express.. so don't worry over much.

If you have gen1 then I do recommend 7.6.1 to match the TC but it is not a biggie.

While I'm not at my desired configuration, I've got something that works.

For the time being, I don't plan to change things until I've got more time/energy to tackle it.

I "suspect" that I can't plug Uverse equipment into my TC. While I had good WiFi connectivity immediately upon the factory reset of the TC, it only lasted a short while. Very soon, I can the same problems as I saw prior to the factory reset.

I've moved the TC to another ethernet jack, turned the NVG589 wireless back on (with SSID & security configured the same as the TC), & all appears to be working.

Thank you sincerely for your assistance.

Hi all,

I tried to work with AT&T and of course it looked like everything was set up correctly but when I got off the phone with them and logged into my PS4, it wouldn't hold the connection. I called AT&T back and in the end we ended up replacing the router because 192.168.1.254 would not take my device code. So I'm starting over tonight and currently have things set up as follows:

TC 7.7.3.

Uverse NVG510 router.

Currently I have the TC hardwired to the router and have the network setting turned off on the TC. I understand that I can turn off the wireless function on the AT&T supplied router and use the TC instead.

How do I need to proceed? Thanks for the assistance in advance!
