Recurring error: A graphics problem has been detected.

All of a sudden I'm now getting:

A graphics problem has been detected. Click "Report" to submit report...

[Ignore] [Report]

And if I click any of the choices it comes right back pretty soon.

(It's less annoying just leaving the error message there.)

This is on a MBP 15" Retina late 2013 running latest Yosemite OS X 10.10.

This model switches graphics card/GPU when running on battery.

I've tried both safe booting and ran disk check and permissions check from Recovery.

It all started when the display server/loginwindow or something froze. I could move the mouse pointer around, but nothing registered with clicking mouse/touchpad or keyboard.

It happened after/when I plugged in an external screen with the mini-dp/thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter.

(Which have never been a problem before ...)

Any hints as to what may be the problem? Hardware or software?

(I'm aware that Yosemite is still beta, but I assume it's still OK to ask. Couldn't find the dedicated error reporting tool anymore.)

I also tried booting into Diagnostics and some other stuff.

Then I tried creating a new user, and found that the error was user specific.

So I logged back into my user and found all the files named

Kernel_<datestamp>_<computername>.gpuRestart

in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. And I just moved away those files, and the error popup disappeared ...

Case solved, I guess. 🙂

also having issues after upgrading to yosemite from mavericks

I have a 17" 2011 MBP I get random graphic glitches when using an external monitor with my thunderbolt display port. If the system reboots I get a graphics issue was detected message, and the option to report it.

Would love for this to be solved seriously hurting my workflow atm not being able to use external monitor

And the glitches Im getting are insane... usually computer becomes unresponsive while its happening:

Yosemite video issue! Help =S

I'm on a 2011 Mac Mini with an HDMI monitor and what seems like the same problem as everyone else. GPU Resets, user display does not recover and requires a hard restart. During the beta I thought I had run into a graphics hardware failure, but immediately downgraded to Mavericks and the problem disappeared. I was on the Yosemite public beta and didn't see this start happening until beta 4 (I think). Foolishly I thought that this issue would be resolved by the time the GM was released, but that is not the case.

This issue has never occurred on my 2012 Macbook Air or my 2008 iMac. The Mac Mini is the only one with an AMD GPU in it. The other two are Intel and Nvidia, respectively. I'm not sure it is directly related to the type of GPU though since the reports on this thread include both AMD and Intel GPUs.

Having the same problem in Yosemite (official release) on a late 2013 15" Retina Macbook. The problem occurs when the graphics chip switches from integrated to Nvidia or vice versa, but only on occasion. (This is why some of you are having problems with external monitors. OSX always switches to discrete graphics when using an external monitor.) I end up in a state where I can move my cursor around, but not do anything else.

Will try moving the logs to see if it fixes it.

Update on my situation, I've downgraded to Mavericks since getting the video problem. The issue continued. Still getting video problems. Have even tried a fresh snow leopard install. Same problem. So was suspicious it was hardware related. And turns out it is... AHT didn't show anything but after going to apple store, I am getting a new logic board Apperantly the video card is malfunctioning. Video card is part of logic board

Adding my voice to the choir. MBP RD 15" 2013, installed Yosemite after the official release, not beta. Machine has frozen several times - cursor will work but no response to any clicks, Alt Tab, and cannot bring up Performance monitor with the three-key combo. Only answer is to power off and reboot at which time the "Graphics error" message comes up.

I've not had any problems like this with the machine before. It's been stable as a rock.

I'm sending the error reports to Apple. I'm leery of doing the file deletes/moves mentioned earlier but may have to, eventually, or restore Mavericks.

I'm seeing a flood of "GPU Reset" in the console - every once in a while it results in a frozen screen but the mouse still works. A hard reset is required to recover.

I've just tried turning off the "automatic graphics switching" in the power preferences as it looks like the GPU Reset is triggered when the system switches between the integrated Intel controller to the NVIDIA GeForce controller.

Third crash today... I click on a link on a known good website and something that worked 100% of the time in Mavericks and Mountain Lion causes the system to hang requiring power-off and restart. I'm honked off beyond belief but it doesn't seem like Apple is aware of this or planning a fix (I've searched)

Any tips on how to revert to Mavericks? I did do a full Time Machine backup before installing Yosemite. But, I have received mail and done work on Yosemite when it wasn't hanging on me.
