Recurring error: A graphics problem has been detected.

All of a sudden I'm now getting:


A graphics problem has been detected. Click "Report" to submit report...

[Ignore] [Report]


And if I click any of the choices it comes right back pretty soon.

(It's less annoying just leaving the error message there.)


This is on a MBP 15" Retina late 2013 running latest Yosemite OS X 10.10.

This model switches graphics card/GPU when running on battery.


I've tried both safe booting and ran disk check and permissions check from Recovery.


It all started when the display server/loginwindow or something froze. I could move the mouse pointer around, but nothing registered with clicking mouse/touchpad or keyboard.


It happened after/when I plugged in an external screen with the mini-dp/thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter.

(Which have never been a problem before ...)


Any hints as to what may be the problem? Hardware or software?

(I'm aware that Yosemite is still beta, but I assume it's still OK to ask. Couldn't find the dedicated error reporting tool anymore.)

I also tried booting into Diagnostics and some other stuff.

Then I tried creating a new user, and found that the error was user specific.

So I logged back into my user and found all the files named

Kernel_<datestamp>_<computername>.gpuRestart

in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. And I just moved away those files, and the error popup disappeared ...


Case solved, I guess. 🙂

Yeah that option is only on i5 and i7 MBPs. You can try "Reduce transparency" in System Preferences > Accessibility > Display. That seems to help some people having display issues with Yosemite. There are a number of threads talking about this issue so hopefully there is an update to Yosemite or a GPU driver that provides a permanent solution.

My 27" iMac (2010) has the same issue since upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite (full version). Sometimes it becomes unresponsive after the "report" button is clicked, where the mouse still moves but you cannot click on anything. Then it resets itself about three times, asking for the user password, before becoming functional again. Not useful if I'm in a hurry.

Glad that you at least reported the problem to Apple, hopefully within your warranty period. My 2010 iMac had similar issues on/off since the beginning, but I tried all the remedies to fix it myself and Apple would have nothing to do with it outside the period. Four trips to the Genius bar, multiple overnight stays while they ran diagnostics, and could never figure out what was wrong. As they called it, they were unable to replicate the problem. So it's good that you at least have a record of this problem. Now the problem has crept back up for me in the form of this error as well as the computer being unresponsive as it resets itself.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me either.


I'm having the same issue on a 4 month Mac Pro Late 2013 since after updating to Yosemite and only when running BOINC, where some projects make use of AMD dual graphics. There's no system crash of freeze, just that **** popup while BOINC keeps running (those GPU-based projects too).

Apple Diagnostics gave back a zero hardware error, tried it three times at least since that popup appeared.


I'm thinking to reinstall Mavericks to check if it's a bug in Yosemite.

I have the same problem as well on my late 2013 rMBP, What happens is my computer freezes and is unresponsive, so I have to shut down manually. Upon booting back up I get the "graphics problem has been detected" message. I will try to de-select graphics switching to see if that helps. Nothing came back on the hardware test, either.

I'm on a 2011 Mac Mini and was having GPU crashing issues. I spoke with Apple after I had run the full hardware diagnostics for a couple of hours. I booted into Recovery mode and did a Verify & then Repair in the Disk Utility. Interestingly, the Verify did return several files mentioned in this thread with the wrong permissions. After Repair, I booted into full OS X and followed the steps to remove the .gpuRestart files and the symlink.

My Mini has been stable on Yosemite since then.

Yep. Late 2012 Mac Mini here (2.5Ghz Intel Core i5) on Yosemite, latest build. Hooked up with HDMI. Error message doesn't pop up while I'm using it, only when I turn on TV or switch to the mac input on my receiver.


Removing those db files didn't help. Turning off transparency didn't help. I don't have that Energy Saver option mentioned, even though i'm i5... Reinstalling Yosemitie didn't help.


Reporting the error every time but this is getting very frustrating.
