iPhoto and iMovies not working in Yosemite

I've just installed Yosemite and now I can't open iPhoto or iMovies.

They are the most up to date versions but just won't open.

Try launching the app from the App Store.

I upgraded two machines to Yosemite over the weekend. Just downloaded iPhoto 9.6 to my wife's machine. App was purchased with my iTunes account, but downloaded it with her account. Was prompted that purchase was made by another family member but OK to download again.

First attempt to launch from the Finder resulted in same non-behavior you experienced.

Second attempt/same result (non-launch).

Went to check download to confirm install was complete. iPhoto was reporting 'Installing'.

Checked /Applications in the Finder to confirm app was downloaded and displaying proper icon. It was.

Quit and Relaunched App Store.

Navigated to "Apps by Apple" (Purchases should work just as well). iPhoto now reporting "Open". Clicked 'Open' button and app launched successfully.

It would seem in the dash to bring out Yosemite, Apple did not make it compatible with iPhotos and as a result iPhotos is greyed out and unusable. Instead Apple have codged together a much lesser facility called 'Photos', it is nowhere near as good as iPhotos was and lacks the proper editing facilities . Its disgusting that millions of people have iPhoto and know how to use it and they have been throwin in the rubbish bin.

Just a year or two back Apple also removed the ability to play and record disks as an integral part of their computers. Some stupid notion of making the computer thinner ! (Who wants thinner if it means loss a of essential components ) Now you have to buy an external drive, more wires !

Both Mavericks and Yosemite are pretty flaky and at times seem to be less stable. Apple which once produced the best computers in the world now seem to be in a race to the bottom to become the worse.....

Apple if you wish us to use photos for some obscure reason, then at least make it as good as iPhoto. Please remember the public do not have to buy from Apple , you have to win them over and wish to buy from you
