iPhoto and iMovies not working in Yosemite

I've just installed Yosemite and now I can't open iPhoto or iMovies.

They are the most up to date versions but just won't open.

No error message displays !!
Help !!

Yes, I installed Yosemite today, tried to open iPhoto, got a message saying that I need to update to the latest version. I tried to do that several times. In the App Store under Apps Installed in the Last 30 Days it says I updated iPhoto today to 9.6, but when I try to open iPhot I still get the same error message. If I click on Search App Store it sends me to the iPhoto update page with "Open" as the option, But if I click on Open nothing happens at all. Is there a more recent update that I'm not seeing?

I can get to my pictures (missing tags, titles, dates, etc.) by going directly to the iPhoto library, but when I try to open the application from Launchpad or from the applications folder I still get the same error message.

No luck. I can get to all my photos and all the info about them by going through the library, as I could before, but I still can't open from the application. As long as I can actually get to my photos I guess I can live with this, but it would be nice ot have it working the way it should. Any other ideas? You are being very patient, and I thank you for that/

I have the same problem...

iMac (20-inch, Mid 2007)

I upgraded to 10.10 then noticed after relaunch that iphoto had to be upgraded (since it no longer worked)

downloaded and ran the update. Now iphoto gives me this at launch (see image) User uploaded file

Once I click on the "Upgrade" button the dialog box goes away...the iris continues to spin, a quick progress bar pops up for 1 second, then the app quits.

I'm running 10.7.5 because the Yosemite update caused an issue forcing me to do an internet recovery which was 10.7.5. I'm unable to update to Yosemite because it says I need to sign into my Apple account (which it is already logged into). I'm logged in and it doesn't reconize that I'm logged in. Now I'm stuck with 10.7.5 (Lion I believe) and no iPhoto, iMovie, etc.

This has nothing to do with this thread - you will find that threadjacking confuses you and others - for your issue contact the App Store support using the link on the right of the App store window

What worked for me was to click the old iphoto icon on my dock, the one with the crossed out circle around it. A window will open asking you to update. Click that, it will bring you to the app store where it will say installing. I clicked that, then the update tab at the top and it finally looked like it was downloading. Then it said open, so I clicked that, and a new Iphoto icon opened that looks more like the new layout of Yosemite. I dragged the old one to the trash and the new one is back in its place and working. Hope this helps anyone.

I did try to update. It looked as if it was installing, and the list of Updated Installed in the Last 30 Days says I updated, but when I click on Open nothing happens, Now if I try to open iPhoto it just sends me back to the same update page which still says Open and still does nothing, I can get to my photos by going to the library rather than the application icon, so I guess that's OK for now.

I attempted your fix...

Photo Library First Aid dialog came up.

Selected "Rebuild Database"

As it initiated, the same "upgrade" dialog prompt as shown in my screenshot popped up. Clicked it. All the dialog panels closed up and quit.

Still have the same problem...

I've also attempted to let the processing run without activating anything in the "upgrade" pop up. Let it run for an hour or so with nothing occurring.

I Am just chiming in, I've been experiencing the same issue of being unable to open iPhot once I installed the latest version. Just upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks on a 2009 MacBook. Hope Apple is able to get this ironed out soon. It's been a rough year for the company when it comes to software glitches. HealthKit, iOS 8.0.1, "CelebGate", now this...

I had the same problem, nothing happened and no message. Console didn't show anything either. I checked and did have the latest versions and all updates.

What worked form me was to trash, and empty, iPhoto. Then I went to the app store, chose the purchases tab, downloaded and reinstalled it. Now it works! For how long, that will be another discussion soon to come.

Funny thing is, I tried the developer releases of Yosemite and never had any trouble. Apple really needs to get back on track and test these things before releasing them. It feels like they only test things on new hardware and fail to test thoroughly.
