can’t make phone call on my mac from yosemite from contacts

I tried all this and sadly it still does not work.

Current status of my issue, after updating all systems:

-I can receive calls.

-I cannot make calls, as the Call icon is grayed out. Checked all settings, they are ok in both iPhone 5S (with iOS 8.1) and MBP.

-When I start typing a regular SMS on the iPhone, iMessage opens in MBP. I finished typing it in the MBP and hit Send, but I eventually get Not Delivered error. So now not even my SMS are working.

After reading this thread I tried everything was on it. Someone mentioned that you need to be sure your phone number is linked to the FaceTime app. Both in iOS and in OS X. So after switching on and off FaceTime and rebooting, without success, I went and signed out from FaceTime on all my devices and singed in again. It kinds of reset all info on every device (you will see popup confirmation messages on all your devices screens).

Success! Outgoing, Incoming, iPhones and not.

Seems like my phone number is not linked to my iPad and iMac. Once sign out and sign in again, everything back to normal 🙂

I figured out!

This greyed out part is only for FACE TIME CALL. FACE TIME AUDIO

To make calls using continuity, you have to go beside the number and a phone logo will appear

Clicking on the logo on the right will let you make calls to friends using iPhone through continuity!

unfortunately it doesn't mean anything..i have same account, same number, same iCloud, same EVERYTHING, firewall activated with incoming connections..I STILL CAN'T MAKE CALLS, only receive them..the blue phone logo appears every time..but the call fails after few seconds. I don't know what to do anymore..

I don't have the other phone logo 😟

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)

I also have an iphone 4s with iOS 8.1 just installed.

iOS 8.0 was terrible for my iphone but 8.1 is smoother as well.

Yosemite works GREAT on my MBP. Even smoother than Mavericks.

I CAN receive phone calls but CAN'T make phone calls.

I look for a contact on my contacts when over a phone # a phone button appears next to it. When I click on it to make the call the following notification appears:

I am signed to the same iCloud account with both devices.

Have tried everything from signing in and out on MBP and iphone. Resetting network, but situation does not change.

Apple info on web page says that ANY MBP or iphone that can use iOS 8.1 or Yosemite can use the answer/call function through the MBP.

Again, I can receive calls no problem on my MBP. Just can't make outgoing calls.

I am using late-2013 13inch rmbp with iphone5s. Systems are Yosemite + ios8.1.

Hand off, receiving calls and sms message are all working well. Only when I try to make a call from mac it says that calling fails.

The same apple id, cellar call in facetime enabled, connected to the same wifi and bluetooth enabled. I even tried log out - log in and restart. It didn't work.

Fixed my issue! A MacBook pro 2011, it works now! Sign out of facetime on both iphone and mac and then sign in again

In my case this happens when the Cisco VPN software is active. I suspect that the traffic is being routed through the VPN adapter. /var/log/system.log says when I initiate a call:

I'm done with iMessages and FaceTime.

after having used my MBP with my iphone for about two hours to send and receive sms's suddenly my FaceTime and iMessages logged out on my iPhone (?!).

SInce then I've gone through 2 stages.

1st - for about 12 hs I could not activate either service (FaceTime or iMessage) BUT could log in with my apple id.

2nd- Now not only activation is impossible but also logging in with my appleid shows network error.

HAve tried EVERYTHING to make this work. Even factory resetting the iPhone. I feel might be an apple servers issue.

should I go back to windows and android? FAR cheaper and I used to spend as much time as i am spending now with this issues. Even less I believe.

I'm far and away now from the "it just works" feeling I had years ago when I bought my first mac

i am having the same problem. Its very frustrating!!

I to had this problem and did everything suggested but finally I fixed it. The biggest misconception I have read on all the threads everywhere is that your mac needs to have it WiFi turned on. This is not true if you have an Ethernet cable connected to your mac and both your phone and mac are on the same home network. Your macs internal WiFi doesn't NOT need to be on and in fact if you have an Ethernet cable connected it wont work at all. The mac dial out feature only relies on you iCloud and home network, so as long as both your phone and mac are on the same home network and logged into the same iCloud it will work.

What I am getting at is, DO NOT have both your macs Wifi enabled and have an Ethernet cable connected. This will cause conflicts. Choose either to use Ethernet or WiFi DO NOT have both on at the same time. It will absolutely work via Ethernet without WiFi turned on. Then all you need to make sure of is that both your phone and mac are on the same home network and logged into the same iCloud.

Hopefully this helps. It did for me after many days of frustration.

I can't received nor make a call after upgrading to Yosemite. My first step was to log out FaceTime on Mac Book Air, and it worked partly, I can make a call via address book, on the "Phone icon".

But still can't receive a call on Mac at that moment, even through I've checked every setting was correct.

My last step was to log out Face time from iPhone then restarted it.

The result, it all works perfectly!

I solved it.

It took me 3 hours to figure it out. Receiving calls on iMac worked just fine but outgoing calls were impossible, getting the message that my iCloud id or Facebook id on iMac and iPhone weren't the same.

In fact they weren't. First of all I was still logging in icloud using my xxxxx.xxxx@mac.com while on my iMac, I was using the same email adress but xxxxx.xxxx@iCloud.com I changed all to icloud.com. It was difficult at first because the iphone still showed the @mac.com adress after I logged in using the @icloud.com login. I went to the apple store and changed the primary email adress under the billing information to be the @icloud.com. That did it. I changed my facebook login also to @icloud.com so that after loggin into facebook on both devices it actually showed @icloud.com.

Then it took me over an hour to figure out that I also had to logout from Facetime on the iMac and change it to icloud.com aswell. Same on the iPhone under settings/Facetime my apple ID was wrong, so I logged out and logged in with the icloud.com apple ID.

Now all just works fine, thanks to the many suggestions in this thread.

I could make calls on my Mac but not receive them. Signing out of FaceTime and signing back in again on my Mac and my iPhone fixed it for me. Thanks for the suggestion, Maxette.
