iTunes 12 incompatible with Windows Vista Data Execution Prevention

I just did a clean install of iTunes 12.0.1 after removing 11.4 and other components as described in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 with 3 GB RAM. Soon after closing the iTunes GUI, I get a Data Execution Prevention notification:

User uploaded file

I have already tested with every DEP setting except AlwaysOff, which would globally disable an important Windows security feature and is therefore not to be recommended. The problem is apparently a Buffer Overflow Exception. Here are the details from one instance:

This is actually not a new problem. As an experienced user of 32-bit Vista, I would have to say that the last compatible iTunes version was 11.1.5. See also Windows Vista problem reports after latest Itunes 11.2 update.

If OS8.1 requires the latest itl DB, then I doubt that Apple will change it for the sake of Vista.

I do not doubt they will not, cause of very few Vista systems have been affected by that problem to be able to track it. What it means usually is that there another program on those computers, most likely antivirus that is blocking itunes doing something - which creates crash/high memory usage/DEP warning. Would not be surprised to know that Antivirus used on systems is the same, but it can also be anything that has to do with multicasting or music playing/recording. Essentially something that creates conflict with itunes operation which Vista by itself would not.

After reading the thread started by Biggestted nearly six months ago (see Incoming Links), I think the antivirus theory can be ruled out. The posters report using at least 5 different brands of antivirus, and Biggestted uninstalled his with no effect. I cannot uninstall Windows Media Center or Media Player to test because they are part of Windows Vista, but I will try to figure out how to disable them if you really think they might be part of the problem.

If you roll back to 11.1.5 you will also need to restore an iTunes 11.1.5 compatible backup of your library file that will have been stored in the ..\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries folder when you upgraded to the next build. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash for the steps involved.

Hello tt2,

Thanks for responding.

I think we may have jumped tracks here. The issue I'm presently faced with is how to get iTunes 11.1.5 to recognize a new iTouch. As to the library help, after installing 11.1.5 I simply recreated the library via folder drag & drop. I'll go back and solve the missing Playlists issue later after resolving how to get the iTouch recognized by iTunes.

I see no provisions in this version of iTunes for WiFi syncing of devices.and suspect that the communication medium isn't the primary issue. Rather, it may be a data format compatibility, i.e., old iTunes doesn't speak the new iPod dialect.

So, I'm faced with having to use a version of iTunes that causes DEP exceptions. Is my only choice to use the latest iTunes? Several weeks ago I located an Apple webpage hosting many of the previous iTunes versions. Now however, I can no longer locate that page. 😕

Hi tocguy, I wonder if you installed the 32-bit or 64-bit version of 11.1.5, and could you confirm whether or not that solved the DEP issue on your 64-bit Vista PC before you upgrade because of syncing issues? I'm sure you could find 11.2, 11.3 or 11.4 at oldapps.com, but 12.0.1 does have some security patches that those versions lack. Frankly, you might want to think about upgrading your Windows.

Marvin,

Yes, it was the 64-bit version of 11.1.5 and No, DEP no longer occurred with that version.

TT2,

Yes, that's the page I was looking for though I still have the same options issue.

  1. Install a known DEP occurrence version of iTunes
  2. Live with the existing version that won't sync (not really an option)
  3. Upgrade Windows so that Apple software will actually run correctly or stated another way, send money to MS to enable Apple's free software. Ah, love the irony there. 😍

Just spent an hour on the phone with a variety of Apple Support levels and got (you guessed it) nowhere.

There is actually option number 4 and it is free.

Since there is the same problem reported on machines with Windows 7, option number 4 would be simply re installing Vista. If I am correct and it is another

program interfering with iTunes, since on the fresh install it does not exist - you will not have a problem.
