Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy will not mount Yosemite

My encrypted USB drive will not mount in OS X 10.10. Drive worked just fine with 10.9.5

After inserting drive and selecting Mac folder, double-clicking the DTVP program will Crash every time.

Hi

Just started the Beta testing for OS EL Capitan and guess what, the issue had returned

Unable to execute the exe on the Kingston Data Traveler 4000 usb drive although can see it, therefore unable to create Virtual secure drive and see the stored data

This was the same issue experienced during the Yosemite beta testing, which was subsequently fixed

DT4000 connected to the USB connection

  1. Appears on the desktop as DT4000
  2. Double click to explore drive content
  3. Open MAC folder to select exe
  4. Select DT400_Launcher.app file
  5. Error message appears, ERR_COULD_NOT_START

Info feed back to Apple by the Beta testing feedback forum, did Kingston have to fix this last time ?

I don't think that will help me currently get the data off my USB stick will it?

Obviously you would need another Mac or PC to rescue the data from the original disk.

Have you got a backup of the OS before you installed 10.10? If not install 10.9 onto another USB stick or disk, boot from that, install Kingstons software & use that to recover the data. Virtualbox should also work if you have a Windows OS to install to a VM (or use the free Windows IE testing Virtual machines).

Truecrypt or PGP may be another option for encrypting that works across several platforms, it's difficult to find a reliable solution that also gets prompt updates for every OS.

P.S. it may make sense to backup these disks to a different form of encrypted disk - it can get you around situations like this.

Good suggestion if the reason is just for security. I use this Kingston 4GB secure stick because it's the only endorsed product from work.

Could somebody post a link to the Kingston report page on this issue so that we can make it more known to Kingston about the spread of impact regarding this issue?

Apple already knows given the automatic reporting on OS X 10.10.

I just received update from Kingston on this problem (still no ETA like smcinto6 reported).

It looks like the fix will be some sort of update to the device which will likely wipe the drive and put it back at factory settings.

The support technician will email me with a link, but apparently the update will not be posted to their support pages.

If true, it looks like everyone will have to have a record (with Kingston) of the problem.

I'll keep everyone posted with my progress.

Sadly it looks like there won't be a fix, the response below has been posted in the FAQ of their website. If anyone does receive a fix, can you please post here.

"Apple has made changes in its latest Mac OS (Yosemite) that have disabled the functionality of this drive. Therefore, this drive has been discontinued and Kingston will not be providing a fix."

I just received an update from Kingston. Here is the response.

"The DTL+ drive will not be updated. It was discontinued over three years ago. And initially the DTLPG2 was also not going to be updated. The DTVP was always going to have an update. If there are no problems in testing, it should be available this week."

From this I understand the Data Traveler Vault Privacy will be supported. Here is hoping...

I'm having the same issue. When will Apple learn that if they want to be accepted by corporate users, they need to keep in mind enterprise users. My company, and huge multinational, requires that we use Kingston secure USB drives. Apple makes them unusable which means I can't use my Mac for work. I know I'm not alone. Apple - not all the corporate clients you are trying to turn on to your products can use unsecured USB drives. Fix the issue!

Find the comment of Kingston:

According to our software engineers, a firmware update for the the DT4000 and other products affected by the Yosemite issue has been finalised and is now in the testing phase. This is due to be completed some time next week after which we will either replace all existind drives with products featuring the new firmware load or if that is possible make an updater available for download to our customers. This will be decided after the testing has completed. We are confidant that the issue will be resolved shortly and will keep all customers affected informed of any updates in this case.Kind regards Bernd Michael Fluegel

Hi

As a MAC user I opted to be one of the BETA testers for the new Apple O/S and I highlighted this issue several times early in the programme . I did this via their feed back process inclusive of the error messages, suffice to say it was neither acknowledged or fixed; I even made Kingston aware.

This is how I get around the issue, I installed XP via a VM programme I bought from Amazon and run an XP sessions on my Mac, I then run the Kingston USB pen as normal from the XP VM session and save to my shared area on my MAC. I then use the data via my MAC apps and then reverse the process and save to the USB pen , not ideal but it works

For Ref the VM software its VMware Fusion 6.0.4 although 6.0.5 is now available you only need it to run the Windows session so you don't need the expensive version.

Hope this helps
