Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy will not mount Yosemite

My encrypted USB drive will not mount in OS X 10.10. Drive worked just fine with 10.9.5

After inserting drive and selecting Mac folder, double-clicking the DTVP program will Crash every time.

Not ideal as you said, but that's the workaround I would also employ... If I was so bothered. My current solution is to leave work at work. 🙂

I also reported this issue to Apple via the formal public beta Feedback Assistant. Alas, apple had not addressed this issue (yet?), which doesn't lend it credence to truly being interested in the corporate sector as a mainstream customer base.

It is what it is.

I have just been on the phone to Apple and they brought up this thread. This is extremely irritating as I use a PC at work then use my Mac at home. I've never thought twice before updating software but it looks like I might have to use a windows laptop (noonooo!) or risk trying another type of encrypted memory stick. But Apple said there is no guarantee that other brands won't have the same issue as Yosemite is new. How annoying.

English Version:

Just had been on the phone with Kingston in Germany/Europe. They were very open and friendly and are willing to provide an update to solve the problem that the Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 does not open since the installation of OSX 10.10 Yosemite. They are "collecting" affected user email adresses to inform immediately the update is availbale, and I bet the more users will register the more the topic will be speeded up...

Therefore: Let them know... :-)

I received email from Kingston. They have issued a firmware updater for DTVP, DTLPG2 and DT400.

I tried formatting my DTVP/4GB via Parallels 9 on both my 10.10 Mac and 10.9 Mac via Windows XP and 8.1 and kept getting 'format failure'. Kingston stated I probably had a drive failure so they will replace my device with a newer DTVP30/4GB device. Hooray for them!

Here is the email I received, but be aware you must run format in Windows. Back up data first!

Dear Kingston Customer,

You are receiving this email because you requested to be notified when the "Data Traveler" firmware updater became available in regards to the Mac Yosemite incompatibility issue.

Listed below is the URL to each Data Traveler updater.

DTVP: https://kingston.sharefile.com/d/s76eab95d8a547f5b

DTLPG2: https://kingston.sharefile.com/d/sbaf10c8b51044b88

DT4000: https://kingston.sharefile.com/d/s9d32149b8974d068

Important Please Read!

1. The updater will format the device during the update process and all data will be lost.

2. Please back up your data! to either a Mac based system which is running an earlier version of Mac OS (Pre-Yosemite) or you may back up your data to the Windows system where you will be applying the update to your device.

3. The updater currently works on Windows based systems only. You must also have administrative rights. Compatible Windows operating systems are: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 all service packs.

4. Only one device may be updated at a time on your Windows based system.

5. The Updater installation instruction are included in the download.

Should you need further assistance, please contact Technical Support at: 1 800 435 0640 / M - F / 6am - 6pm PT.

Thank you for making Kingston your upgrade partner.

Sure hope this solution works for you.

Thanks, TMaverick.

This worked for my DTLPG2 and DT4000. I successfully updated both (but not at the same time) via Parallels Desktop 10 from a MacBook Air running Yosemite (OS X 10.10.1).

As it says in the post and multiple times in the instructions from Kingston, this is a complete format of the drive along with the firmware and software upgrade. Back up your data and then run the Updater.exe in the zip file from Windows. Make sure you run it when the drive is just inserted (i.e. do not run the launcher).

I appreciate the relatively quick turnaround from Kingston... despite being annoyed that this scenario occurred in the first place, of course.

And, I agree with martin1709 in that it would be nice to be able to implement the fix from a Mac (OS X).

Hi

In response to my earlier post and the logged fault call to kingston, the following was the reply :

For those who don't have DT4000, but the earlier USB 2.0 versions

cheers

Dear Andrew,

There is no updater required for the DTVP30 - All drives were tested and found to be compatible with the latest Mac OS X operating system 101.10x Yosemite.

If the drive you have is not working with Yosemite, you probably have the USB 2.0 version of the DTVP - there is an updater for that which can be downloaded here:

Look at the dates of this thread & the date when Yosemite was released (October 16 2014). It took Kingston a month AFTER 10.10 was released to get a resolution to the issue. As far as I can tell the fix required you to use Windows too. I doubt Kingston are ready for 10.11 yet. You probably want to bring it up with Kingston.

You also mention selecting an .exe, it seems like you are trying to run a Windows app on your Mac. Do you have a virtual machine or Crossover setup? It won't work otherwise.

Ok mail back from Kingston Tech Support dated 13th July 2015

"We are aware of an issue with the new El Capitan OS and our hardware encrypted drives.

Please note that we are currently lookin into whether or not we will be able to provide an updater for this and other affected products.

However, please note that at present our focus is on supporting those products curently in production and not those whose discontinued more than 12 months ago.

If there is a possibility of getting the discontinued drives to work with the newest operating system, our software engineers will make an updater available.

As well as the older and probably no longer available DTLP this problem also affects the current DTLPG3 model as well. The DTLPG3 was introduced after Yosemite and did not previously need a firmware update although it is clear it will need one for El Capitan.

We use vast numbers of these encrypted memory sticks and if Kingston don't issue another update I will have no choice but to dump Kingston in favour of someone else. On that topic do people have suggestions?
