I had the same issue after upgrading to Yosemite, but figured it out yesterday.

Upgrading to Yosemite caused some applications to stop working and some of these were set to open at login.

I went to System Preferences/Users&Groups/Login Items and simply selected programs that were set to open at login and deleted them. The ones I deleted were the ones that no longer worked.

This fixed the problem for me, I hope it works for you all as well.

Same issues here but none of these things seem to fix it for me.

Since upgrade to Mavericks, I can't use keyboard function keys to adjust volume on MBP headphones output. I play loads of music from the Finder and this is a real pain for me. I plug a 1/4 cable from the headphone jack to my mixer in my studio and I get a very low volume. I used to use the function keys hundreds of times a day. I've read about how now you are supposed to use the volume from iTunes etc but this is from the Finder and there is no volume control without this ability. Anyway, if I was just pluging in actual headphones most of them don't have volume so why would Apple make it this way. Anyone know a way to get it back? I use a new 2014 MacPro for my main music production.

Can anyone confirm that we can no longer use the volumes keycoms when you plug in headphones and play audio from the finder, or does it work for you? I scan though thousands of samples sometimes looking for the right sounds and the levels are all over the place.

Thanks

I was having an issue where selecting an Airplay device the volume keys would be working fine. However going back into audio preferences and selecting internal speakers meant that the keyboard volume would not work. Doing this worked perfect, thanks for that 🙂 the command reset the system in some way and everything is now back as it should be.
