airdrop between iOS 8 & Yosemite

I'm having the same exact problem with the same devices. I'm on call with apple tech support right now and will keep you updated!

This article from ArsTechnica will explain the details, but the long and short of it is, your computer need to have bluetooth 4.0 compatible chip, just like the iPhone. Which means anything older than mid to late 2012 will be unable to airdrop from Mac to an iOS device. Apple essentially adopted the iOS version of the AirDrop protocol for OS X 10.10

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) - Technical Specifications

Bluetooth 4.0 wireless tech is listed

@ceenvee703 I've got the same proble: my mac is able to see and send files to the iphone whereas the latter doesn't see the mac. I guess that in our case is a problem of ios8.02. Let's hope that with ios8.1 they are going to fix the problem.

I just upgraded my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.1. Same behavior: my Mac can see my iPhone and transfer files to it, but my iPhone can't see my Mac.

I will say that, somehow, no idea how, I got my Mac to show up when trying to AirDrop from my iPhone. This was yesterday. But even when it showed up, when I tried to transfer a file it said "denied." Never even appeared as an option on my Mac.

I had this same exact problem. I just updated to 8.1 as well but that didn't directly fix the problem.

Fix that worked for me:

Setup both devices to airdrop like normal.

With the swipe up menu open on your iPhone set the phone aside (should see the airdrop menu without your macbook popping up)

On your mac, click on the bluetooth symbol on the top right of the screen and click open bluetooth preferences.

Now your macbook should show up on your iPhone airdrop after a few seconds.

Not sure why opening these preferences activates it, but it somehow does.

I am having a similar issue. Using a 2009 iMac running Yosemite and an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1 and there is no connectivity. Nothing shows up in the AirDrop window in Finder. Anyone find a solution?

I went to go try your steps, but before I could, my Mac finally appeared in my iPhone's AirDrop area. No idea why. One idea. My AirPort Extreme router provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz -- maybe there's some weirdness where one is connecting to the 2.4 GHz network and the other is connecting at 5 GHz.

I'll test this theory if I get a chance.

I'm also on iOS 8.1 (iPhone 6) and 10.10 (rMBP 2012). I've logged out and in of my iCloud accounts on both rMBP and iPhone several times but I can't get (1) Handoff to work between the two (although Handoff works perfectly between the iPhone and an iPad both running 8.1), (2) Instant Hotspot and (3) AirDrop to work. My impression is that this is a Bluetooth issue with the current OS versions (at least Handoff worked before when running Yosemite public beta), also the rMBP 2012 is Handoff and Instant Hotspot ready, that's the conclusion delivered by System Report...

What's weird is that the Mac can see the iPhone and iPad from the AirDrop Finder window, but not the other way around (as reported here by others). May this be a tell tale sign of an issue (probably) on the Mac?

I usually don't post much on forums, but I found something worth sharing !

For those who can't get their mid2012 (or later) macs to see their iPhone on AirDrop on Yosemite, this is a display bug from the Finder.

If your iPhone is well connected to your mac's AirDrop, you should see "1 element" at the bottom of the window, meaning that your device is indeed there !

Try to drag a picture in the empty space where your iPhone should be, and you'll see it popping on your device 🙂 It juste worked for me.

Notice that it is a bug for other situations, for exemple, when you want to browse the folder with the first display option in the finder...

Another tip to see the iPhone on your Mac is to switch your wifi network off and on on your iPhone. AirDrop can't work without Wifi and it seems to reset something. Try and you'll see if it works for you.
