airdrop between iOS 8 & Yosemite
Has anyone seen documentation detailing which Mac models running Yosemite will be able to airdrop to iOS 8? For example, will some of the older Macbook models which can run Yosemite be unable to do this function?

...oh and sorry for the tripple post, but you also have to unlock your iPhone to see it on Yosemite's AirDrop, for some obscure reason...
In my opinion, a file transfer request should pop up as a lockscreen notification. For the moment, as soon as you lock the device the iPhone disappears...Bummer...
Still no dice. Thanks for trying.
Dear heavens this was a big mystery.
I was having a bear of a time trying to get this working. For ages I couldn't get the Macbook Pro to show up in anyone else's Airdrop list. But I think I've found it.
Go to System Preferences. Open up "Bluetooth." Make sure the destination directory is set to a default directory. On mine, there was no default. I selected "Other…" and browsed to my Downloads folder.
No sooner than finishing that, the MBP popped up on the addresses list of all the other devices.
Could someone else experiencing this problem give it a whirl and let us know?
Ok, so I have the same problem. I can see the device on ios that I want to air drop to, this is from yosemite. but there is no send button. Even when I open an app on ios and try again it does not work. I tried wiht an mp3 and m4a up
A bit more information. Earlier I mentioned things popping into place when I set a destination directory. Turns out that was a smidgen off.
What had momentarily fixed the problem was going into the Bluetooth Preferences. For those few moments when the Macbook Pro was making itself discoverable, AirDrop was working beautifully. Then when we closed the Bluetooth Preferences dialog, it was back to The Invisible Mac.
So the trouble isn't (necessarily) hardware. It's broadcasting availability/discovery. In the Yosemite New Features document, under "AirDrop," the behavior which seems to be the problem is whatever is supposed to enable the "Receive files anytime" feature. Or put another way, in the Finder window for Airdrop, it's the mechanism that's supposed to work with "Allow me to be discovered by: <contacts> <everyone>."
All the transfers are working once I get it going. So…some kind of Multicast DNS behavior/configuration that needs coaxing?
In my case it's my iphone I can see it when I right click a file and click share then click air drop. I can choose it int table but there is no send button. My iphone is not locked and wifi is on on both devices.
Thanks, that's a nice summary. I also believe it's a discovery issue. Possibly related to issues at "machine ID level" since it used to work before on my rMBP when I had Yosemite installed on a separate partition. (BTW: this installation is still broadcasting itself even though it's long gone/partition removed - since it's showing up in the Text Forwarding Message pane on my iPhone.
I was having the exact same problem trying to send a photo from my iPhone 5 (iOS 8.1) to my MacBook Air (Mid 2012, running OS X Yosemite 10.10).
My MBA could see my iPhone, but my iPhone could not see my MBA.
I can confirm that your proposal works for me as well: once I opened the Bluetooth Preferences, my MBA magically appeared on my iPhone.
Very strange, but... at least there is a work-around for this problem.
Thanks for sharing!
Hmm very odd very odd. Yeah I can see my iphone which is an iphone 5 running ios 8.1 and I cannot see the send button when I click the mac. HOpefuly this is the <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzuhYKTnNu0kcE50dXQzenU3WWM/edit?usp=docslist_ap i">screen shot </a> of the file. HOpefully the html code does not appear. *smiles*
Be blessed all.
Sorry for the delayed response everyone. Anyhow, when presented with this problem (or any problem technologically) the most practical approach is to restart your devices. If that initial step fails, Go to System Preferences on your Mac and then go to Bluetooth. Toggle your Bluetooth off for 20 seconds and then toggle it back on and then try AirDrop from both devices again.
Nope that did not work. I restarted all devices and did what was suggested. I'm beginning to think that air dropping from mac to ios is a no go.
I may have found a solution.
Open "System Preferences." Open "Sharing." Turn OFF "Bluetooth Sharing."
I did this on the mysterious invisible Macbook Pro and it has been present on AirDrop on all the other devices in the house.
It does kind of make sense that the old Bluetooth file sharing protocols and the newer AirDrop protocols on Bluetooth might conflict and behave just as we've been discussing.
Will other folks check to see if this solves their problem?
I'm exactly the same , i can send files to my iPhone 6 plus but not vice versa, macbook pro retina late 2013. it did work prior to me updating to iOS 8.1
Tried that. Mine was actually already off on my iMac. But I did toggle it on and off to see if it worked in either scenario. No dice.
Sent from my iPhone
Are they both using the same AppleID account for the Cloud? If so, then just drop the file and it will show up in the Download folder of the other machine. No Send, or Accept are needed.
