Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

Hi!

In the last few days I'm experiencing the same problem, my battery drains much faster than before...

It didn't happen right after I downloaded Yosemite though...

Besides, where can I find the User Launch Agents? Should I remove them?

I found where Launch Agents and Daemons are, but couldn't find User Launch Agents from the Finder.

That's EtreCheck report:

Problem description:

Battery drains much faster with Yosemite

Please help me on how I can stop the battery from draining fast.

Reply

Dec 23, 2015 11:23 AM in response to wesfromOK

Any fixes yet?

I just bought a used 2013 MB Air running 10.10.5 with a brand new battery replaced by Apple ( only 3 cycle counts on it ). Like everyone else reporting here consistently since 10-17-14, you can watch the batt. % drop with nothing open At All. This machine has Apps installed but nothing running. I have not added any of my data yet (no migration). Has anyone yet found out a fix to this yet. The majority of posters show no issues in their etreCheck reports, but since upgrading to Yosemite (and going to El Capitan did not fix the issue for a recent poster here) battery life has dropped to 1/2 (or less) of what everyone had just before upgrading from Mavericks.

From CoconutBattery: battery Mfgr date 8/1/15 After charge to 100%: Full Cap = 7474 mAh, Remaining = 7474 mAh, Design Cap = 7150 mAh,

After unplugging 97.9%, battery usage 4.4 watts

After unplugging... System says 100%, 14:01 remaining, no apps using signif. energy

My EtreCheck report for the record.

One of the reasons I chose a 2013 MB Air was because it was supposed to have much better battery life than the 2012. I never saw any caveats say this ONLY applies to specific OS's (Mavericks) and to avoid Yosemite and El Capitan.😕

You need to see what application(s) are draining the battery and also check the battery condition.

First hold the option button and click on the Battery icon on the menu bar.

From the drop down list,

  • What condition is the battery reporting?
  • Are any apps showing up as using significant battery usage?

Also in Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor - CPU.

What is anything is using high CPU usage, that you would not expect to be doing at the time?

You can sort the CPU% column for highest usage at the top to make this window easier to read.

Any apps that are reporting high battery usage or CPU usage, are you running the latest versions of those apps?

Hm... I'm not sure if it's gonna be helpful for you but ..

I tried reinstall macbook back to Mavericks (normally create bootable USB and erase whole disk on macbook) and it shows battery about 4-5 hours :-/ ... kind of wired ... after that try to make an upgrade from App Store to Yosemite and install Yosemite like an upgrade - like normal. Now battery showing about 9-10 hours... I watched now 1 hour movie from safari - and battery droped from 100% to 95% and showed 9:20h more for using ! ...

So, in simple steps:

  1. Backup all your data (TimeMachine, external HDD)
  2. Download Mavericks
  3. Create bootable USB
  4. Boot to usb (option key after start up)
  5. Install Mavericks
  6. Upgrade to Yosemite from App-Store

…well, I don't even know how to do that. Really, I'm not a big forum user, I'm sure that's obvious. I was just looking for answers, as the battery issue is really bugging me. I had to get out of my nice comfy, cord-free armchair, and plug in at my desk, again.

So far I've tried:

  • posting the Etrecheck thing
  • resetting PRAM
  • resetting the ? (I forget, another acronym—S something)
  • turning down transparency in Accessibility

Some people have also suggested just waiting a couple days. Nope. It is what it is. One day, after a couple updates, I'll notice it's all ok again.

Like the majority of others here I have a MacBook(in my case an Air) whose performance has been hobbled after upgrading to Yosemite. In pursuit of a resolution I've tied every option offered here and as well as every other forum post I can find. Among the MANY attempt:, I do NOT have Chrome or any other Google software installed and I HAVE done a clean install of Yosemite. I have also been to the Apple store where the Genius conceded, after repeated failed attempts, that there were indeed battery performacne issues with Yosemite in some cases and Apple was working to rectify it.

That all said what is is even more aggravating than having my machine hobbled is the manner in which so many self-proclaimed "experts" respond to this forum. In particular:

  • There is not a single piece of documented evidence anywhere that Chrome has any bearing on this problem. In my particular case I do not even have it installed on my machine. STOP with he repeated useless comments trying to blame this.
  • After being berated by an aforementioned "expert" for posting a reply that I was also having this problem I did indeed open up a separate thread. The result was one ridiculous response by someone who appeared to have not even read my post. Further, NOWHERE does Apple state that the proper way to utilize this forum is to open separate threads for each person's similar problem. To the contrary it is much more efficient for all involved to combine all the information in one place.
  • Lastly, there is absolutely no value in the least with attacking the messenger. There are MANY of us who are having significant battery issues from Yosemite and in the majority of cases we have been willing to try almost any remedy Apple can offer to rectify it.

If there is an actual suggestion to help I believe I speak for many when I say we would greatly appreciate it, but if it is just vilifying, criticizing or rehashing what has already been said do not waste everyones time and just keep it to yourself!

Do you need to pay for a Genius bar appointment to analyze your system ? (I do not have Apple Care)

On my end, after upgrading and experiencing the issue, I reverted back on Mavericks and here are my system infos and perfs :

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2013)
  • Mavericks OSX 10.9.5
  • 20% of battery loss in 100 minutes (= avg of 8,3 hours of battery) running only Word and Safari (3 tabs opened)

I am definitely awaiting feedback from moheny which seems running hard testing and should be able to give us a feedback within 3-4 days on 10.10.2.

Battery usage update, 2013 MB Air 13" : (day one)

Battery is still draining unusually fast so I started a test yesterday and am recording the 'System' battery %, the CocnutBattery app %, Watts currently being used and mAh remaining.

The 2013 13" MB Air has absolutely NO apps open, it is kept in standby with top closed except for the ≈ 30 seconds it takes to record the battery %'s and mAh remaining estimates.

Sunday 7:00 pm unhooked charger.

System 100%, CocBatt 100%, using 1st opened .5 watts, then said 3.8w, 7065 mAh remaining

Monday 9:00 am

System 90%, CocBatt 87.5%, using 1st opened 1.3 watts, then said 4.2w, 5999 mAh remaining

Monday 7:00 pm

System 80%, CocBatt 76.2%, using 1st opened .5 watts, 5361 mAh remaining

24 hours of standby: OS X system estimates 20% battery used. But CB estimate of 76% seems more accurate with CB showing 1704 (24%) less mAh remaining.

Conclusion: At this rate, the MB Air's 'Standby' life will be just 4 days. 4 days vs. 30 days of standby for a brand new battery??? 😮

What is causing this hyper drain on many many 2013 MB Airs?

Note: that this used ’13 MB Air had a new battery put in it by Apple just before I bought it last month. (System literally showed TWO battery cycles). I have the screen brightness turned down to 50% (but obviously screen brightness setting is not a factor for test with top closed)

I’m thinking Apple care could not diagnose the reason for the extremely fast drain so put a new battery in it (which did not fix the issue obviously). With advertised up to12 hour battery life ( for very light usage) and up to 30 days standby time, this MB Air (and many other 2013’s per the Google) have drastically lower battery life

Battery and Power4

  • Up to 12 hours wireless web
  • Up to 10 hours iTunes movie playback
  • Up to 30 days standby time
  • Built-in 54-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery

Thanks for the tip. Battery is functioning normally. No apps using significant energy. And just in the last two minutes of my computer sitting doing nothing on it I lost 2%. In activity monitor, activity monitor was using the most CPU at 6%. Everything else was below 1%.
