Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

Thanks for the tip. Battery is functioning normally. No apps using significant energy. And just in the last two minutes of my computer sitting doing nothing on it I lost 2%. In activity monitor, activity monitor was using the most CPU at 6%. Everything else was below 1%.

Ok, you could try the following;

Download and post the results of 'Etrecheck' so other members can see what might be causing conflicts and offer a solution http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Reset your System Management Controller Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Create a new user account and run that account, to see if you get the same battery drain

Boot into safe mode - OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Dec 12, 2014 1:18 AM in response to Chipjc

Ok guys,

I had connectivity problems since if there was bad signal to WIFI my laptop simply disconnected. Batterie life was about 3-4 hours down from 9 on Mavericks. I experienced several graphic issues too. Date and Time f.ex. AM / PM were only half there or the apple sign bar didn't even show up, after booting the screen had to adjust to my settings first and sort of "jumped" and so on...

However, I did a clean install. MBP late 2013 Retina (the fastest there is). I bought a new external to get through the procedure.

1. FIRST, backup with "Time Machine". I did a backup on my "old" external. (no.1)

2. Create an image of your HD drive on an external drive (no. 2). Make it bootable (to do so, download Carbon Copy Cloner). Then put Yosemite installer on it too. I created 2 Partitions, put the installer into the second and the bootable image into the first. How to? -> Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support

3. Boot your Laptop from the external drive. (Restart, hold "opt", select your 1st partition of the second external. It will probably run a bit slower but never the less stabile.

4. Go to Disc Utility and erase your MAC HD Drive (IF everything runs properly with your image you just created and all files are there! CHECK THAT FIRST)

5. Restart, hold "opt", select "Install Yosemite" - or whatever it is named (2nd Partition, external no. 2) and select you MAC HDD as destination.

6. Follow the instructions as Yosemite will now be installed on your MAC.

7. When "Migration Assistant" pops up, select Transfer Data from "another mac" or "time machine backup" (first option) and select your backup drive (external no. 1)

8. WAIT! Do not restart or shut down or whatever you will feel like doing. It can take several hours for your transferred files to index (depending on how much data you have). I did shut it down after 4 hours because I thought it was stuck. Bad idea. So, I did the whole thing again and learned patience... so WAIT!

Now batterie life is 9 hours, Connectivity ist fine and all else is too.

Hope it helps

If you started to notice the issue after installing Yosemite, there is a 99% chance that your battery is not the problem. My battery only had 213 cycles after upgrading to Yosemite and when my battery life went from 7-8h (real) to 3-4h (real).

Cycles are really what's matter more than age of the battery. You can download the app "Battery Health" from the Mac App Store to check if you need a replacement (check this website to determine the appropriate cycles count for your laptop: Mac notebooks: Determining battery cycle count - Apple Support)

Up to 7 hours of wireless web seems to me to be navigation with wi-fi on and changing page every 5 min or so with backlight halfway. I think it is not representative of a normal use so I would really expect less (5-6 seems to be the thing for your 2011 laptop).

PS: Also I found that a week ago but too lazy to try myself; maybe it's worth trying: Yosemite battery drain solution found?

@Alex,,

Al-tho the description is the same, the package itself is different:

Mac OS X: What's the difference between delta and combo updates? - Apple Support

In another (dutch) article and discussion people told there is a complete reinitialization of the drivers.

To me after this update my old MB was more responsive, and the popular items in Safari consists

of two rows now. And yes, some longer battery life.
