blurry font on yosemite

so i've upgraded to yosemite.

overall i like it, simplified and more like iOS

however the first thing that hit me is how blurry all the text is everywhere!

it's pretty awful, i'm sure it wasn't that bad with mavericks

the menu bar at the top of the screen is worse of all, i really don't understand what is going on here.it's bad and i hope it will be addressed in an update

User uploaded file

i think you can see from this screen shot how the web text is fairly clear whilst the menu bar is blurry

While I cannot suggest anything beyond what has been posted I felt compelled to reply that it was immediately apparent that the fonts are blurry when upgraded to Yosemite on the GUI and on some pages on Safari. A huge oversite and a strange choice to ignore function in such a detrimental way. It's become so distracting now that I've noticed it that I may go through the hassle of downgrading.

I hope Apple will come out with a solution other than what they've offered so far. Sure my macbook is mid 2010 but at the very least the fonts should be crisp.

Well, I suppose my mid 2012 MacBook Pro purchased in March 2013 is old....NOT. I had a choice to buy the retina display MBP, but I didn't want to. The thing is that I had zero problems with the system font in Mavericks. It was perfect.

I found discussion threads when Yosemite was in beta on more than one website and there were complaints of blur, that the font was too light and faded, and this bug was sent to Apple by many developers. Some think Apple optimized font smoothing on Yosemite for retina displays, but not non-retinas. Who knows what is going on.

I updated to 10.10.1 and the font seems to fade even more at times. It like it goes lighter and then slightly darker. I can't even tell what is active in the drop down menu. If I turn off Use LTD font smoothing, it get worse on my display. The font just isn't crisp like it was on Mavericks.

I wish there was a terminal command I could to do to increase the HN font weight to make it darker and crisper because it doesn't look as if Apple will be doing anything about this for quite some time. Very frustrating and annoying. It really affects my work and I don't want to have sore eyes all the time. Just tonight, I had to go back to that Lucinda Grande hack that someone on MacRumours offered (see my previous posts), but I'd rather that Apple fixes this font problem. I'm so ****** off.

And even better yet, what about mac minis who's only option is a external LCD? I don't understand that they would make a OS optimized for Retinas, when the majority of machines and mac minis(which probably make up a huge % of macs) don't have them! I reverted to the old fonts with some stuff I found on Github but I still have problems. QC for mac products in general has gone to the garbage after Steve Job no longer had control.

Well, tbirdvet, if you don't have the blurry font problem, why are you posting on this thread? Many people don't have this problem, but some do. We're all aware of that. It's like why do some people have WiFi issues with Yosemite and others don't. I don't have WiFi issues in Yosemite. The fact is, I had sharp system fonts in Mavericks and in Yosemite it's blurry.

I've done some more digging and it appears that Apple optimized font smoothing (rendering) on Yosemite for retina displays and not for non retina displays so that is why some of us have this issue. This was reported as a bug to Apple in beta testing and it wasn't corrected. So I presume the public is beta testing Yosemite now and I never signed up for that.

OS X Daily covered this. I tried it out and it didn't help.

I really can't believe this oversight by Apple. How many more updates before this is fixed?

Nov 20, 2014 2:20 PM in response to Philippe Mion

I tired the patch and the new font looked good, but it really dimmed my font in the drop down menu. I had to delete the patch 😟

I reset my PRAM after I deleted it. It seems a bit better, but we'll see. Just when I get hopeful the font always seem to get blurry again. I wish I could go back to Mavericks again (I could do it but I don't want to) and have a clear, crisp, and dark system font. The thing is that I do like the new Yosemite features.

It would be so helpful if Apple gave us more setting choices. Then we wouldn't have to look for patches.

Thanks Philippe Mion. Did the font patch work for you?

Can anyone think of any other system resets relating to display that I could do? If anyone finds another font fix, please post it.

I just wanted to say I have the latest macbook pro retina 15" and since upgrading to Yosemite I see blurry text all over the place. I feel like my eyes are messed up but other people see it too. It's almost like there's random smudges on my screen making some text hard to see. It's not all text, but randomly throughout. Mostly in Safari because that's where I spend a lot of my time. Will I be updated if a fix becomes available?
