FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused"

After upgrading my MPB to Yosemite, I elected to turn on FileVault. In the Security & Privacy panel of System Preferences, the status shows "Encryption paused" and the text under the progress bar reads, "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Trouble is, I am running from the power adapter!

I have rebooted and tried another power adapter. The battery icon in the menu bar correctly changes from battery to power adapter as I connect and disconnect. However, the encryption status never changes. I have left the machine running overnight with no change.

Any ideas?

10.10.2 and still the same problem. God damm, just got a mac for christmas and apple is not convincing me....

Tried the same instructions but without luck. One time it worked and the encryption continued but then my gf tripped the power cable and back to encryption paused... forever....

I just want to force disable filevault and be done with it!

Dear Apple, please fix this, it should be just a retry or force retry...

The site at this link fixed my problem as well...thanks Hjelmis! In particular, "Marisa" added steps on Dec 30th that enabled me to do a complete wipe (deleting the group number using "diskutil command, then renaming the partition in the Disk Utility, then reloading the OS.) This took me back to the fresh install state where FileVault was not enabled and my system now functions fine.

I'm having a similar problem -- I'm not getting the "encryption paused" message, but it's been stuck with the progress bar about two-thirds of the way across (with the words "Estimated time remaining..." underneath it) since I updated OS X on Thursday evening. Every so often the progress bar will zip across as though it's finished but immediately go back to the same place again. I've tried restarting but this doesn't do anything. Meanwhile, my system has slowed to a crawl and stalls frequently. Any thoughts?

Brand new iMac (i.e. desktop not laptop). Faultvault paused on encrypting because it's waiting for a power supply and has been stuck in this state from day one of receiving my iMac and never got unstuck since. I'm uncertain why it thinks it doesn't have a power supply since it must be plugged into the AC to even run and doesn't have a battery!

I tried repairing both the logical and logical partition group (as per above article) and nothing worked to resolve this issue.

This is extremely disappointing to be waiting this long to fix an out-of-the-box experienced problem. Clearly only a patch to the OS is going to resolve this issue.

Same here. I have tried everything suggested on this thread, but nothing has helped. I know that reinstalling the whole system might do the trick, but I don't want to go through the process of moving my files around and reinstalling all the applications and updates. This kind of problem SHOULD be fixed by an update. Actually it already should have been fixed! I'd like to know the reason why Apple hasn't reacted to this because it obviously is a universal problem. Are they stuck too?

I am having this problem as well. I was on the phone with Apple for 35 mins tonight and they told me to reinstall OS 10.10 which I did, but the problem is still here. So I just waisted about 2 hours trying to fix thing. I'm going to make an appointment with the Genius Bar to fix it. And they better fix it or I will be getting a new macbook.

Unfortunately this solutions posted above does not work for me:

Use command+r to repair both your disks.

Then shut it down and hold shift+control+option+power for about 20 seconds.

Give it 5 seconds and restart it with your power adapter it and it should be good to go!

I am on an iMac and there is no way to hold shift+control+option+power with the bluetooth keyboard. I tried the repair, and shift+control+option+eject, didn't work. I tried the same process except shift+control+option + iMac power button on machine, and it didn't work. So this is not a solution for all (unless someone can figure out how to make it work for an iMac).

What shift+control+option+power does on a MacBook is to reset the SMC. Steps to do so on Mac desktops (Mac Pro, iMac, Mac mini):

(After using command+r to repair both your disks.)

Shut down your Mac.

Unplug your Mac's power cord.

Press and hold the Mac's power button for 15 seconds.

Release the power button.

Reconnect your Mac's power cord.

Wait five seconds.

Good luck
