FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused"

After upgrading my MPB to Yosemite, I elected to turn on FileVault. In the Security & Privacy panel of System Preferences, the status shows "Encryption paused" and the text under the progress bar reads, "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Trouble is, I am running from the power adapter!

I have rebooted and tried another power adapter. The battery icon in the menu bar correctly changes from battery to power adapter as I connect and disconnect. However, the encryption status never changes. I have left the machine running overnight with no change.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I have Sierrra. Enabled filevault and it got stuck.

Solution
:Open Terminal -> type: " sudo fdesetup disable " then paste your password or recovery keyword.

I pasted my recovery keyword and voila it worked again and the process was finished in a few hours :-D

Yay! 🙂

Thank me later 😉

Hi _ps

Here are the instructions you will need for Time Machine and how to erase and reinstall OSX:

Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support

OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

I suggest you use an external drive for Time Machine as I did.

Before this you might want to follow Scafede's process as covered earlier in this thread. Apparently this alone has worked for some people, and Apple Support basically asked me to follow the same process.

Of course I can't guarantee this will work for you but it was what Apple Support recommended for me and it worked for me.

I just can't ******* believe it. I bought this new MacBook Air yesterday and guess why I'm switching to Mac from Windows? To avoid ******* **** like that.

I'm really disappointed by Apple. I already tried everything from this discussion but nothing worked. It's still bugged.

I will call the Apple Support now and if they don't have a quick and simple solution, I will find a really simple solution for me: I will just put the ******* thing back in the box and send it back.

Thanks god I have the opportunity to send this piece of **** back, I can't believe that this can happen to a new device from APPLE. This is ridiculous.

Things like that happens from time to time and only thing what you can do is to try resolve it. If you do not have enough patient to do that then save yourself more stress (and what is more important save the AppleCare person from listening to your usless talk because it is not his/her fault) and send back to Apple your MacBook Air.

You can release your anger here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

There is few steps that can take to resolve this problem, many times already mentioned here on Apple Discussions by other users. If you need a help, we can help you, but again, your usless talk it won't fix the problem for you!

I resolved the issue with the following steps:

  1. Check that my drive stuck at encrypting by

    diskutil cs list

    sudo fdesetup status

  2. Reboot two times
  3. Execute a couple of times
sudo fdesetup disable sudo fdesetup enable
  4. Reboot in Rescue mode (cmd-R)
  5. Unlock the main partition (using the iCloud password, that the same as administrator password in my case)
  6. Repair permissions (fix smh like "ald" daemon)
  7. Repair the whole drive
  8. Boot in normal mode and wait on battery when optimizing process have been finished (about 5 minutes)

After failing with the suggestions mentioned in this thread, I attempted an old-fashioned wipe and reinstall and stupidly nuked my boot partition. The good news is, this brought me into the Genius Bar for both help and answers.

It turns out, this is a known Yosemite issue affecting machines after a Time Machine migration, but not a Time Machine restoration, that’s the key.

The following is what I did to fix the issue (after the Genius wrangled me a new boot partition). It took me about 6 hours for almost 300 GB of data, so plan accordingly.

  1. Create a fresh Time Machine backup, duh.
  2. Reboot holding command-r.
  3. Choose to restore from a Time Machine backup. This will erase everything before restoring, so I hope you didn’t skip step 1.
  4. Once done, your computer will restart, and FileVault will be off. You can now safely switch it on via System Preferences -> Security to start the encryption process without issue.

Same problem. Spoke to Apple and the following fixed it. Will erase the whole disk so make sure you are fully backed up.

  1. Restart in recovery mode [command R]
  2. Go to Terminal using drop down windows
  3. Type: diskutil cs list
  4. Copy the group number 1st long number
  5. Type diskutil cs delete [long number as above]
  6. Exit Terminal
  7. Reinstall OS X

Note: After stage 3 check how many groups were found. If one group then do as above. If two groups are found then you probably need to do the above twice but not sure about that as in my case it only found one group.

Good luck!

Ugh, and since this isn't threaded, my response went to the end. Jonathan's solution, which worked for me, is essentially:

  • Zap PRAM (reboot holding Cmd-Opt-P-R)
  • Boot into recovery after hearing the two chimes (Cmd-R)
  • Select "Repair Disk"
  • Mount the encrypted partition
  • Select the disk on which the partition is located
  • Click "Repair Disk"
  • Wait until complete, and reboot.

i just tried these steps and now filevault is decoding!

  1. reboot
  2. reset pram with option+cmd+p+r
  3. booting with cmd+r the utility disc
  4. select the partition encrypted
  5. click file and unlock
  6. repair the partition disk
  7. repair permission on partition
  8. repair macintosh hd
  9. select the partition encrypted
  10. click file and decoding if clickable (months ago was grey and this procedure did not work!!!)

a warning told me that the decoding was started!!! I hope someone can solve the issue with this procedure!

...now I can install El Capitan 😀

Same thing, I've got the dreaded "Connect power adapter to resume encryption" message in FileVault.

I tried all the obvious things: rebooting, resetting the SMC, zapping the PRAM, still stuck.

I then tried reinstalling OS X Yosemite: after several hours (sigh) it finished; I logged in, went to FileVault, couldn't turn off encryption but it appeared to start. It ran for 5s, then: "Connect power adapter to resume encryption".

After last year's disaster with Mail and gmail accounts, now this. Argh.

My happened exactly the same thing. Stuck at Encryption Paused, and already tried all the recommendation in this post.

It's no longer moving anywhere now.

I tried to recover using Time Machine and even worse, it failed completely and now my macbook pro unusable. Searching For Disks, HDD no longer detected.

Internal Recovery is no longer an option. Now in the middle of downloading Internet Recovery(Command + option -R)

hopefully I can restore from time machine succesfully and forget FileVault

Mine finally sent into Apple Authorized repair center.

When Trying to Install the OS X back, it couldn't detect my disk anymore, there is no longer a disk I could select.

Trying to Erase the partition also the same, the option was all greyed out, and nothing I could do.

Tried doing Internet Recovery resulted with the same symptoms finally I gave up and sent it to the shop.

I hope you guys have better luck than me.

Once all repaired, I will try installing Yosemite again without FilaVault.

Hey,

Had exact same issue, after filevault got stuck i tried restating and mac will not boot up now, tried disk recovery utilities but OS X is also not re-installing. Only thing am worried about is my data. I don't have a backup. Can anyone of you please suggest a way to get my data back before erasing the disk and re-installing.
