I can confirm finally after much frustration that the iPod classic will not work with anything iTunes 12 and up. I ended up purchasing an old classic the other day thinking it would be incredibly cool to have, and I have now realized I purchased a lovely paper weight. I just got off the phone with apple and they have confirmed that the iPod classic will absolutely not work with the new iTunes. Attached is a picture of the chat just for explanation by the source. I've searched for hours trying to find a solution to this and I came up empty handed. Hope this helps.

I've just this minute synced my iPod Classic with iTunes (for Windows) 12.6.0.100 without any issues. It also synced with iTunes 12.5.
iTunes and the OS have the software necessary to communicate with the device. A healthy iPod classic should work fine with iTunes 12.6. See Corrupt iPod Classic. What are the HDD stats?

See this post by Kenichi Watanabe - Re: My iPod Classic 160Gb won't register in iTunes - which gives a link to a potential DIY drive replacement.

I can't answer your question exactly, but I can tell you that, whilst my iPod classic 160GB shows as a disk on my desktop, it doesn't seem to show up in iTunes. I am currently investigating to find out if this is resolvable or just support has been abruptly halted in iTunes?!
I would hold off on updating for now if I were you.
(I'm running Mac OS 10.10 on a 2011 MacBook Pro)
OK, scratch that... I got it to show up after a restarting iPod, Mac, iTunes and connecting directly to USB port on Mac.
Initially it did like to automatically disconnect within a few seconds of showing up in iTunes, but swapping cables and hitting sync quickly after connecting seem to have allayed those problems.
I will try it under a test environment and I will post my results on Sunday. 🙂 Thanks for the answers.

Why wouldn't it be compatible? Have you tried it?

Oh! I see you haven't. Why have you assumed the worst then?
If you do not want all of your playlists erased & purchases taken off of your iPod I STRONGLY suggest you forgo the newest Apple experiment at your expense. It erased everything i spent hours on in seconds.I had no idea.DO NOT TRANSFER TO THEIR NEW ICLOUD EXPERIMENT.We are their guinea pigs.Im highly irritated I lost all of that work.

If it helps, please let tt2 know.
Simply put, i just attempted to connect my 160gb iPod classic to yosemite with itunes12 and the whole thing went bad.
The disk didn't respond, then i received error codes 1430 or 1434 in addition to "Connect to Power" warnings - I've reinstalled the device (although this fails frequently as the device appears busy), formatted via MacOSX diskUtility, gone into DFU a number of times and still annoyed about the situation.
Monitoring the system.log doesn't report errors and the diagnostics does not report bad sectors.
At (to be honest) a loss to resolve this.
Itunes recognises that the device is "Corrupted" and requests to "restore" - but all fails... Will escalate to apple support (genius) if this continues...
Ok, I have tried it. OS X 10.10 and iTunes 12 will recognize my iPod Classic, but I am still unhappy with both of the ugly programs. I will not upgrade from OS X 10.9.5 and iTunes 11.4.
I would concur with some of the other posts and strongly avoid updating to 12 if you can help it - it's a crock of sh*t as far as I have experienced.
I recently tried to sync my 7th Gen Classic and it went completely wrong. No matter what I tried, iTunes couldn't cope and it repeatedly crashed or read out numerous unknown error messages. I know there isn't anything wrong with the device (never had any problems since I bought it) as I managed to successfully drag and drop about a dozen albums, but it still took me close to a day, and that was only after I had factory-restored the device 5 times and uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes about 3 or 4 times.
I am livid that I have lost all my music from the device and seem to now be faced only with the prospect of having to buy an iPod Touch; despite all the great advice on here from other users (and my limited understanding of tech & software to fix this myself), sadly I have had no luck and I'm not willing to fork out money for Apple support to tell/ask me the same thing.
Yep. I uninstalled itunes & reinstalled per another suggestion. Now all my imported files are gone. PLUS itunes updated without my permission. I never let it update automatically but it did it anyway. So thanks Apple for being "sooo much more worry free than Windows" - NOT.
I also tried installing an older version of itunes but it doesn't work because it says my library won't load because it was created with a newer version of itunes. 😟 ARGH.
