Apple Remote Desktop update issue in Yosemite

I bought ARD in 2009, before the App Store. It has been updating itself, and in fact, I now have the current version (3.7.2). I just upgraded to Yosemite. All other apps appear to have been updated correctly, but App Store appears to be confused about ARD. It shows version 3.7.2 (the version I have) as an available update. If I try to update it, it fails with a generic error message, either “We could not complete your purchase. Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update [sic] from the Apple menu to check for available updates.” OR “Update Unavailable with This Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.” However, I continue to see an update badge on the App Store, and I receive notifications that I need to update ARD. It's annoying.

I tried various Apple IDs and always got the same result (which is logical, since I didn't buy ARD from the App Store).

I suspect that my purchase of ARD has “aged out” of being supported by the App Store program, which now apparently assumes that all installations were purchased from the App Store. Is there some way to make this work correctly, short of completely uninstalling the version I have and buying the App again from the App Store?

Ditto for me. Purchased the physical copy back in 2009. Wasn't there something a while back (maybe a few years or so) where ARD was having trouble with a new version of OS X? Or was that the installer issue? I vaguely remember having to extract files from packages on the disc in order to install it on a new (at the time) version of OS X.

Anyway, here's a screenshot of the error (for those who are curious). I've also submitted a ticket.

I have been doing some research on this. There is no _MASReceipt folder in the application. Right click the application open contents. There would be a receipt (text) there if you got it from App Store. But if you just make a folder and named it _MASReceipt. then you get a different responce when updating.(Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates.) So all you need from Apple is the right receipt.

Although not an "appropriate" fix, following these instructions results in the App Store no longer bugging you for an update.

  1. Right-click on another application you have purchased from the Mac App Store and show package contents.
  2. Drill down until you see the "_MASReceipt" folder.
  3. Right-click and copy that folder.
  4. Now go to the Remote Desktop application in Finder and right-click it and show package contents.
  5. Double-click the "Contents" folder.
  6. Press command-v to paste the _MASReceipt folder that you just copied.
  7. Enter your password as needed.
  8. Finally go to the Apple menu in the upper left hand corner and select the App Store... option which should have a blue oval with the number of updates you currently have available.

After that, the App Store should stop bugging you about the update, or at least it worked for me on two different computers I tried this with. Hope this helps until Apple releases an update to fix this issue.

Cheers!
