Apple Remote Desktop update issue in Yosemite

I bought ARD in 2009, before the App Store. It has been updating itself, and in fact, I now have the current version (3.7.2). I just upgraded to Yosemite. All other apps appear to have been updated correctly, but App Store appears to be confused about ARD. It shows version 3.7.2 (the version I have) as an available update. If I try to update it, it fails with a generic error message, either “We could not complete your purchase. Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update [sic] from the Apple menu to check for available updates.” OR “Update Unavailable with This Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.” However, I continue to see an update badge on the App Store, and I receive notifications that I need to update ARD. It's annoying.

I tried various Apple IDs and always got the same result (which is logical, since I didn't buy ARD from the App Store).

I suspect that my purchase of ARD has “aged out” of being supported by the App Store program, which now apparently assumes that all installations were purchased from the App Store. Is there some way to make this work correctly, short of completely uninstalling the version I have and buying the App again from the App Store?

I have ARD, from the retail box. I don't have the issue.

You should be lucky that Apple kept offering updates. Many other companies would have stopped it long ago and just charged you for a major paid upgrade to 4.0 only available for purchase from the Mac App Store.

I've been here in the Mac App Store since it's beta inception. The issue happened to a few hands full of folks regarding iLife as its happening with ARD.

The ASC is not the place to vent, as it states in the Terms of Use, to which you agreed when you opened your account here.

BTW, so is discussing hacking MAS apps with _MASReceipts. Those conversations can get you banned from the ASC if the Hosts get wind of it. That is how pirates hack MAS apps. And yes, if you use the receipt from another app, you will likely get updates for the app whose receipt you co-opted. That's how folks find out that they have pirated apps, update alerts for apps they have never installed.

smart. this should have occurred to me but it didn't so thank you!

For anyone who found that ARD still showed an update in the App Store, you should probably copy the "_MASReceipt" folder from an app you actually purchased as opposed to a free app like iPhoto. I did not test this but I assumed that I should use an app that was actually paid for—perhaps it would have wore either way.

Penalized? Seriously? In what way at all does this "problem" really effect anyone? It's a red/blue bubble with a number in it; a tiny bug included in a rather large and what I would consider awesome update to the Mac operating system.

It is a problem because ARD wont work.

Maybe it works if you did an upgrade from 10.9, but i did a clean install of 10.10 and installed ARD from CD and it doesn't work and won't install upgdates.

As a note, software update still exists via the command line. So if you're not running 3.7.2 of ARD, you can go to Terminal, and type:

sudo softwareupdate -l

and then your account password, and you should see the update for ARD (if it's available). Then just do a "sudo softwareupdate -i <Update Name>" or "sudo softwareupdate -i -a" to install all updates.

That said, ARD will still show up as an update in the App Store since there's that bug (the _MASReceipt "fix" should alleviate that though). Apple will probably just end up doing what they did with Aperture, and giving everyone a free version via the MAS, but maybe them doing that was only because they knew Aperture was being discontinued. =/

I called Apple Support and received this workaround(below). It worked once but upon reboot, the issue returned. I have ARD installed 3.7.2 but App Store Update keeps listing 3.7.2 as available and when I try to update, I get:

Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates.

This all happened after Yosemite upgrade via the App Store. I have the same ARD on my laptop but used an installer package to upgrade to 10.10 and my laptop ARD is working. Go figure.

Workaround:

1) Remove the Remote Desktop Application from /Applications if it is there.

2) Download the 3.7.2 ARD update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1733

3) Mount the ARD disk image that downloads.

4) Run the following commands ( I would drag and drop the pkg onto the command line)

a) sudo pkgutil --expand /Volumes/Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2 Admin Update/RemoteDesktopAdmin372.pkg /tmp/ARD

b) sudo ditto -x /tmp/ARD/RemoteDesktopAdmin372.pkg/Payload /tmp/ARD/Extracted

c) sudo su or su root

d) ditto /tmp/ARD/Extracted/Applications/Remote\ Desktop.app /Applications/Remote\ Desktop.app

5) Launch ARD, and enter in the serial number when requested.
