Apple Remote Desktop update issue in Yosemite

I bought ARD in 2009, before the App Store. It has been updating itself, and in fact, I now have the current version (3.7.2). I just upgraded to Yosemite. All other apps appear to have been updated correctly, but App Store appears to be confused about ARD. It shows version 3.7.2 (the version I have) as an available update. If I try to update it, it fails with a generic error message, either “We could not complete your purchase. Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update [sic] from the Apple menu to check for available updates.” OR “Update Unavailable with This Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.” However, I continue to see an update badge on the App Store, and I receive notifications that I need to update ARD. It's annoying.

I tried various Apple IDs and always got the same result (which is logical, since I didn't buy ARD from the App Store).

I suspect that my purchase of ARD has “aged out” of being supported by the App Store program, which now apparently assumes that all installations were purchased from the App Store. Is there some way to make this work correctly, short of completely uninstalling the version I have and buying the App again from the App Store?

  • Right-click on another application you have purchased from the Mac App Store and show package contents.
  • Drill down until you see the "_MASReceipt" folder.
  • Right-click and copy that folder.
  • Now go to the Remote Desktop application in Finder and right-click it and show package contents.
  • Double-click the "Contents" folder.
  • Press command-v to paste the _MASReceipt folder that you just copied.

This solution works for me !

Thank you mathewhellums

Hello again al:

Well, I finally got this albatross off my shoulders; the following link made it disappear from the App store "updates" list (and the pesky icon and count is now gone too).

1. Follow the instructions in the link noted below.

2. Log out and log in again.

3. The ARD update should no longer show in the App Store list.

4. If desired, then reinstall ARD under YOUR apple id.

Good luck all!

Marty

Uninstall or disable Apple Remote Desktop

All those instructions tell you is how to uninstall the Remote Desktop app/services entirely. This thread has countless individuals and businesses who have purchased legitimate licenses of ARD and need to use it daily -- removing it is not an option. We bought it long ago, in a box with a disk, for $130 or more and have been using it happily, without erroneous nags and update badges. And we can't "reinstall ARD under OUR apple id" because it is not a purchase that is registered with our Apple ID. That's the issue here; Apple needs to link our previous purchase of ARD with the current ARD product in the Mac Apple Store, just as they did with iLife box purchases, long ago.

Again, most of us in this thread don't have ARD linked to our Apple ID, otherwise the update wouldn't fail and the badge wouldn't be erroneous. And expecting us to pay another $79.99 now, just to download the same exact version of the same software we already have and are using, just so the badge will go away, is absurd.

On the ridiculous flip side of things, the App Store is *also* telling me this "You Have 3 Apps to Accept" ?

(well, it's two in my case, and it's referring to iMovie and iPhoto) and this is despite the fact that I have already accepted them, and when I click to accept it tells me this, and yet refuses to allow the banner to go away. I see this on my MacBook Air now running Yosemite, but not my iMac, both on the same AppleID. This is strange and annoying.

Once again DRM makes things far less joyful than they need to be. I really hope Apple fixes these issues... it's a buzzkill overshadowing what would have otherwise been a perfect upgrade experience. We shouldn't be penalized because we have been long-standing users of Apple products, with software purchased and installed prior to the Mac App Store's existence. 😠

Yes. It's alerting me to a software update THAT DOESN'T EXIST. It completely breaks the Mac App Store's alert mechanism that lets me know about real updates. I now am told to "just ignore it." What about other updates? I should have to go into the App Store manually and look to see what updates are really there, and just gloss over the big fake one that never goes away? Yes, that's a lesser experience for me. Yes, it's annoying. The alert mechanism should be accurate and not annoying, it should let me know when/if there are actual updates for the software I've purchased and it should allow me to install them, or somehow make then update badge and alert GO AWAY. Anything less for earlier purchasers of this software (which was $130, not $80 or $1.99 by the way) is akin to being PENALIZED.

That being said, I love Yosemite. That doesn't mean I can't be supremely peeved by this annoying bug. DRM is getting in my way, and it's annoying and rude.

Huh? How is that helpful? I can't be peeved by an obvious, glaring bug (to which Apple's initial response is that I just "ignore it") and still be a satisfied Apple customer? The world isn't that black-and-white. And this is a Discussion forum for tech support issues of Apple products.

Please. I have multiple Macs and iDevices and a few PC's too. I'm an advanced user and professional tech. This issue is beneath Apple and should (and will) be fixed. Venting here in the meantime is healthy. Blindly hexing anyone who may offend your sensibilities, by recommending they buy a Windows machine, is not.

It's been proven reliably that this issue is affecting anyone who purchased and installed the box version of Apple Remote Desktop, the one that cost at least $129, well before it was sold in the Mac App Store (where it now sells for $80) and well before the Mac App Store even existed. Meanwhile, our versions are installed and up-to-date, and for most of us at least, still working. It's the App Store that is confused and wondering, where did we get this app from, and trying to "update" it, and failing.

The same EXACT issue happened with customers who bought the box copy of iLife, before the Mac App Store's intro transitioned us to digital-only distribution. In that case, at least, Apple made it right, and they linked the licenses.

Remote Desktop is a tool for admins and was pricey. It's not installed on everyone's Mac. And many of those who have it now, may have gotten it for less, more recently, at the App Store. Those who have had it, and paid more, from the earliest days, are the ones affected by it. This has been confirmed by many, many people. In this thread alone as well as elsewhere on the web. There's nothing "messed up" on my Mac, I assure you. I have seen this issue pop up on a clean install of Yosemite on a bare metal, brand new MacBook Air, with the only extra software installed being Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2.

If it's not affecting you, why are you belittling the folks to whom it is?

Oct 24, 2014 11:01 AM in response to mathewhellums

Understood and appreciated. I am happy with Yosemite, especially given that it was free. I am not as happy with how Apple has handled my $129+ purchase of Remote Desktop. That said, your temporary solution didn't work for me. I've tried the _MASReceipt from 3 different apps. Is there a specific one you can recommend? Will using one over another have some unexpected weird result, like alerting me for THAT update for THAT other app, when that app has its own update available? In that case, are we better off choosing the _MASReceipt from an older, perhaps-forgotten app purchase that won't be getting frequent updates? Does it matter?
