Slow shutdown on Yosemite

I didn't have any old Parallels files, but was still having the same problem. I did have left over Avast files from when I had put a/v on at one point. Getting rid of Avast fixed for me. Just an FYI.

This sorted my problems, from a 3 min shutdown to less than second. its almost too fast now!

I deleted all files in relation to parallels, and too those in the launchdeamon and launch agents folders found in the library.

Same story here, the only thing the seemed to help is that I removed ALL of the login items, did a clean restart (still took quite some time) and after then it takes ONLY 20-30 secs. It's a little improvement but not a solution.
However I'm gonna do a clean reinstall in April.

I fixed mine by disabling "Firmware Password" via firmware password utility in Recovery menu (pressing command+r upon starting mac). It boosts shutdown time from 30 sec to 5-10 sec.

I hope that Appple get this fixed soon.

the uninstall of parallels didn't work but deleting all left parallels-files in the HD/ Library the shutdown takes only a few seconds again.

+1 Sorry for the stupid misquote/reply mechanism. This site absolutely blows monkey turds. (It is slower than molasses and has long outstanding login anomalies.)

I use parallels and have this issue. I found that I had installed and then uninstalled a Verizon USB hotspot driver. The uninstall left a plist in the aforementioned folders. I deleted the plist, and shutdown times are back to normal.

For anyone having issues, scan through the plist files and if you see one that is a program that you uninstalled, remove the plist and see if that helps.

That did the trick. The install, found all old versions and removed everything cleanly. Then I removed the Parallels install and it went from 2.3 minutes to shutdown to 5 seconds. Super. Thank you so much!

So, i took a chance and bought the program you mentioned, and it worked for me too.. I was at my wits end trying every last thing and CleanMyMac2 did fix the shutdown hanging problem, it also cleaned up 8gb of space for me too!... However, i noticed for me that i can't use a picture as my desktop background otherwise the issue sometimes comes back... What a freaky situation for all of us... But any who, I now support CleanMyMac2 and i'm glad you posted this.. So thank you!

Macbook Pro early 2011 - trashing Parallels and all associated files took me from 2-1/2 minutes shutdown to a few seconds.

Almost bought a new Mac to get rid of this problem which has plagued me since upgrading to Yosemite.

This also worked for me - Parallels on 2012 MacBook Pro Yosemite.2.5 minute shutdowns.

Cleaned disk space. Ran Disk Utilities Verify/Repair. Still slow shutdown.

Removed Parallels. Still S-L-O-W shutdown. Removed the parallels files from LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons. After one more slow shutdown it now shuts down instantly!

I Finally remove TOTALLY Parallels by this command:

cd /Library/Parallels/Uninstaller/Parallels\ Hypervisor/

sudo ./Uninstaller.sh

Insert your root psw then run the command. Wait the full uninstall, then try to restart your macbook.

I also had the same problems and after deleting the Parallels files my shutdown time went from more than 2 1/2 minutes to just a couple of seconds. Thank You

I had the same issue but had not parallels installed. I removed all files from the two folders, Launch Daemons and launchAgents and now my mac shuts in 5 secs!.

I finally found the solution. Similar to whatever David has mentioned.

I couldn't find any launch agent or launch daemon

So I simply went to this website

Download the version of your parallels. Uninstall completely and there you have it. 3 seconds shut down time.

I concur with the other people that have replied to this post. I have a MacBook Air and installed Yosemite yesterday and immediately noticed my shut-down was taking almost 3 minutes. Rather than hunt and peck through the library files for odd bits of parallels left behind to delete, I elected to download (and pay) for the full version of CleanMyMac2. I used that application to uninstall Parallels and then allowed CleanMyMac2 to work its magic on the rest of the machine. Result, problem solved ! The machine shuts down perfectly and I am having no other issues related to the OS X Yosemite upgrade.
