On a three year old MacBook pro shutdown times after installing Yosemite have gone to more than 3 minutes. First the screen goes black and then the spinning segmented wheel continues for about 3 minutes. No outside programs/util installed except the required Java.

After an hour online with Apple Support, and several restarts, and throwing away anything in the two cache folders, resetting the parameter ram, etc. etc. It came down to three files in the Launch Agents and Launch Daemons folder. I had removed an old installation of Parallels from this laptop but left these files in place. After a few restarts and letting the Mac reestablish the cache files the shutdown is now about 2 seconds. I guess software mfgs will have to start including unistall utilities with their programs....

thank you! I was getting so frustrated! I reset the pram and did multiple restarts, then I read this and deleted all the old parallels files like you said and voila! From 5 minute restart to 3-5 seconds!

In my case, in the Library subfolders (thank you Jean-Louis for directing me to the right place) there were also some remains of another uninstalled software, not just Parallels. Thanks to your advice I've been able to locate and delete all the junk. Now my Mac (MacBook Pro 2011), shuts down in a flash!
If you close the lid, it does not continue to shut down, so the time when you had it closed, was not all shut down time.
But you can try looking in Macintosh HD> Library>LaunchAgents
Macintosh HD> Library>LaunchDaemons and deleting any files in those folders. this worked for me.
I did the same, removed a few login items and it helped a bit.
I hope to do a clean reinstall soon!
I have the same problem with my late 2012 model 27" iMac with a fusion drive. After installing Yosemite beta 2, my shutdown and/or restart time increased from approximately 10 seconds to more than 2 1/2 minutes. The problem still exists, even after installing the released version of Yosemite. I have sent feedback concerning this problem on three separate occasions.
Found this post on Reddit. Did an amazing job. So Parallel files not only dwell in LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemon folders. They can reside in shared folders and an array of other locations. Here is a link with an apple script by the Parallel makers to purge the whole Mac of parallels. My macbook pro 2010 with an upgraded SSD took 2.5 mins to shutdown now its only in mere seconds.

I have a current version of Parallels running on Yosemite and it was not the problem. The problem seems to come from a Daemon from a removed version trying to run and not finding Parallels so it just hangs. The files remained there during use with 10.09 and were not a problem so I never noticed them. Only with the Yosemite installation did the fugitive files raise the problem.
Don't get confused by the fact that some of us are talking about Parallels. Parallels is NOT the problem.
Problems arise when some "orphaned" files remain in the above mentioned folders, after removing an application... in my case, for example, there were some files left from Parallels and other files from another application: I had to remove all of them to solve, not just those related to Parallels.
To echo other success stories. I migrated to a new MBP running Yosemite (10.10.3) after having uninstalled an old version of Parallels and began experiencing 3-5 minute shutdown/restart times. After moving the above-mentioned Parallels files to the trash and emptying the trash, my next restart was 3+ minutes. But thereafter it has been almost instantaneous. Thanks!
Parallels is definitely the problem. Deleting all of Parallels files allowed my Mac Pro to shutdown in 5 seconds
I have MBP 2010 that I upgraded the Yosemite recently and noticed a long shutdown. I was following another thread about deleting contents of caches, launchdeamons, and launchagents prior to finding this thread now my start up is longer than usual and the shutdown still takes forever. I also was able to delete parallel components in those folders. Now I need to fix this new problem. I am already thinking of doing a clean install. Hope someone can help.

I have the exact same problem, the only difference is that I have Parallels 9 installed and do not want to uninstall it. Is there any way to fix my 30 seconds shutdown time without removing Parallels?
I have parallels installed because I have to use it and I'm not sure it it is causing the problem but my Mac pro 2009 runs slow after it wakes up then I try to shut down or restart and it takes sometimes up to 30 mins to an hour. I did a clean install on a SSD with 32gb of RAM. It is an 8 core so it shouldn't have an issue there but after it finally reboots or shuts down it runs fine. Is Parallels causing these issues?
I have a Mac Book Pro and it does not seem to have this issue and I am running i7, 16gRam, SSD with Parallels with no issues. I ran the beta just to make sure everything worked fine and with no issues. As I am typing this response it is lagging after a reboot about 4 hours ago. I guess I have to reboot my Mac Pro every 4 hours or so. The shut down is 15-20 mins now. Strange - guess i'll have to surf the net to see if others are having this issue.

Our macbook air 2011 was also taking 2-3 minutes to shut up. We had parallels before but was unable to find ALL the files that scattered all over in various folders.
So, we installed cleanmymac 2 and this software was able to find those hidden parallels files. Granted, we took three pass to find them all. Now it shuts down in 1-2 seconds.
We are happy campers and thank you again for all the valuable info.
