How do i add back this button ? I'm using a high resolution and when i want to create a new tab and go to one of my bookmarks, i have to jump all over the screen to create that new tab. I need this button back.

I've found a decent workaround for this. It was annoying to me to have to change my habit of opening a new tab from a toolbar button just to the left of the address bar to getting used to one of the other ways of doing it.

The Solution:

Add safari extension "Website Opener".

Add the toolbar icon to your preferred location in toolbar.

Long press on the icon in the toolbar.

Here you can now remove the default URL included - I believe it was the website opener extension info page - and add your own choice URL (or multiple urls if you want to open multiple new tabs).

Click Save when done.

Now when you press the icon your new tab(s) will open.

I've just published a Safari Extension that replicates the old New Tab button in Safari 8.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way of reading the standard preferences from an extension, so I had to add some Extension Preferences to allow you to select whether you want an empty new tab, your Favorites or to visit a specific URL, but other than that it's a straight replacement.

Hi Martin, WOW! Thanks a million! I NEEDED a "new tab" key on the left near my other toolbar features!...it was way past the "want" stage after only a week of being a newly upgraded iMac El Capitan 2015 owner. My last computer is a beautiful (yet now ancient 2006 iMac with original 10.4.11 OS Tiger) "paperweight" that I miss more than words can be typed...I can NOT believe that I was totally clueless what an "extension" even is...but I was about to go berserk from having to scroll ALL the way to the right of the top toolbar to click on that default "new tab" [+] symbol EVERY time I wanted a new tab page to open...

So....I googled the issue and was SO AMAZED that JUST by reading YOUR post...I could click on the link to create and use your CUSTOM extension and VOILA! I SOLVED IT! I'm seriously blown away happy and impressed that a near total novice like me could use your incredible creation SO easily and quickly! I'm going to enjoy searching this Apple Support pages more from now ON! 🙂 Extra Q's:

1.) Have you got any other "magical" equations/and or quicker click # "work-arounds" to give us BACK our "right click" delete key (from the standard size keyboards) that's ALSO MISSING on the slick and speedy "wireless Magic Keyboard? [have been using the fn + delete key method which is 2 clicks too many!]

2.) ALSO, the wireless Magic Mouse is NOT correlating to where I want it to be as a cursor arrow and I find I need to click many times to get the correct action accomplished..is THAT a "settings" issue???

3.) How can turn OFF the auto-correct typing feature in gmail and Facebook chat?

I now have your tab! good job! now of course just like all of us who did not like the location of the plus tab located all the way to the right edge of the screen..(imagine those who bought the 27 inch iMac! hahah that would be like taking a trip to the edge of the universe) the symbol can not be dragged to a new location... or can it! It is now located near the center ..

I tell you some people's kids! haha If the symbol can not be relocated, I will get use to it. It is a big improvement of what apple did. I can not believe how dumb that was..
