Yosemite, poor performance with Apple TV

I usually use my apple tv as second display over wifi with my MacBookAir6,2 13'' 8GB RAM but today i installed Yosemite from App Store and i can't use my apple tv as a second display because the video streaming is really slow and is really annoying work with that performance, i tried to use mirror display over airplay too but i had the same issue. it a problem with Yosemite ?? when will apple repair that ??. I also tried to use the P2P airplay without my wifi access point only with my mac and apple tv but its the same issue.

😠😢 I really miss when apple worked with almost any problems.

The error seems to be connected to AWDL, when connecting to AppleTV it scans for nearby devices and also after the connection is established it seems to continue scanning some time (around 30 seconds I guess). After this time the connection gets much better, no more audio dropouts occur.

This error can be 100% reproduced when starting a new AWDL discovery. When clicking the AirDrop tab in Finder, the the AirPlay connection immediately gets instable and audio dropouts occur. This continues until i leave the AirDrop tab in Finder, after that the drop-outs continue for about the above mentioned 30 seconds, after that everything works smooth as expected.

So i guess the initial drop-outs occur as the AWDL discovery triggered by opening the AirPlay menu item continues for the mentioned time. The sporadic drop-outs might occur because AWDL crawls environment at a given period? The reproducable error when activating AirDrop (even with disabled Bluetooth and just for receiving, not scanning for devices oneself) tab in Finder seems to prove the source of these problems.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon, I loved AirPlay so much in the past....

How can switching BT off make the life better if the movie sound is streamed over BT to home stereo receiver and large speakers and movie itself over AppleTV to my TV? It just does not make sense.

Is there any other solution than switching BT off?

It is not just a lag when watching movies, my TV screen freezes, it's impossible to pair my 6 months old MacBook Air with 2 weeks old Apple TV 😟

It worked with previous OS, is the only way to get it work to downgrade?

I have the similar problem when streaming videos via mirroring.

I went to purchase Beamer to play videos on Apple TV, it is equally awful - problem of detecting the airplay devices. You gotta turn off the Wifi for 10 seconds then back on in order to connect to Apple TV.

Seemingly, the upgrade of Yosemite has caused such problems. Hopefully, Apple will fix the issues ASAP!!!

I've just purchased a brand-new iMac which came with Yosemite. When I stream iTunes content from my brand-new iMac to my ATV2 it works very sluggish and I get a lot of interruptions (using the AirPlay icon in iTunes). However, when I enter my iTunes library from my ATV2, then the stream for some reason works fine.

Doing the same with then ATV3, which is in another room, I do not have these issues both ways.

Any idea how I can get my iMac with Yosemite to work with my ATV2?

I spent 2 days with the technical support from Apple with the same issue.

After creating a new partition on my mac to get the original data extract from computer, it has been sent to the engineering and the answer came today:

We are facing a compatibility issue between ATV and yosemite, we are currently working on an update (we don't have any resolution date and we don't know if the update will come from ATV update or Yosemite update).

NB: my problem wasn't solved with the bluetooth.

So only thing we can do is wait and see

A mac can connect to the apple tv3 in two ways, using your wifi network or by using a p2p connection. It looks like the mac uses bluetooth to talk to the apple tv to initiate the p2p connection. When this works then it will make that connection and it looks like everything works fine. Except that yosemite is buggy and will not give you a smooth streaming experience.

So when you turn off bluetooth then it won't be able to make the p2p connection and it will fall back to the wifi network connection. I did not find settings on the mac nor the apple tv to a) show which connection it has made or b) to have some influence on the way it connects.

So when you have, like me, a decent cable network, then you don't want a wifi p2p connection so just turn off BT and things will work oke.

I did find however that the apple tv seems to 'remember' things which will cause it to keep using the p2p connection so you might need to restart it.

The post by papakaliatiinspired me to write this post so great thanks to him.

I am also having issues connecting to my ATV 3 from my mid 2012 MBP (Yosemite 10.10.2)

I have tried all of the suggestions, BT off, restarted rebooting all of the devices.

Every time i try to connect the ATV screen goes black for 30 seconds, then get a message on MBP saying "could not connect"

very frustrating!

When my macbook air turns on, if I start using airplay immediately (through itunes or beamer) I can use it.. But after sometime, the connection through iTunes get longer time (usually no result), and beamer is totally useless. I need to restart my Macbook air again to start using... Sometimes restarting Macbook air doesn't help. I need to restart my ATV too.. Waiting for the Yosemite update ASAP! This is really annoying..

Still experience this annoying bug in Yosemite.

Has anyone found a (even temporary) fix for this ? I'm pulling my hair out !

My config :

Apple tv 2nd Gen

Macbook pro retina 2012

Imac 2013

Whether it's video or simply audio it's laggy all the time.

I have tried

disabling bluetooth = No love

disabling awdl = no love

disabling airdrop = no love

toying around with Wifi settings (5Ghz or 2.4Ghz) = no love

But it works flawlessly with my iphone 5S on my apple TV, so the bug is clearly in Yosemite.

Apple need to get their sh%!t together and fix what's broken before bringing useless features...

I cannot believe how many things have gone wrong in 4 years in Apple products... They no longer make great software.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried with El Capitan to see if the issue is fixed ?

Thanks

Hi i just recently purchased MBP Retina (2015) running OSX Yosemite 10.10.4.

I am experiencing the same lag problems streaming to Apple TV connected to a Samsung 1080P TV.

I have never had an issue streaming of any other device, including iphone 5, 5S, 6 and ipad 2.

My girlfriend also just purchased a Macbook Air (2015) this is also OSX Yosemite 10.10.4 and has NO PROBLEMS streaming.

I have looked through countless forums, most suggest connectivity/wifi problems or put it down to a bug in OSX Yosemite.

I am confident the problem lies with the retina display and the downscaling to a TV, i have tried various options including "Match display to Apple TV" but nothing seems to work.

It is really frustrating......with most devices now coming out with retina displays you would think apple would have this under control by now.
