I had same problem after upgrade to Yosemite, AirPort Utility coildn't find Airort Time Capsule (said it wasn't in the network etc), TM Backup had only 2-3 times success in a day. But AirPort Utility on my iPad and iPhone have no problem with finding AirPort Time Capsule.

The following simple steps solved the problem:

1. Change IPv6 to Link-Local (Mac's Network Preferences, not Time Capsule's setting)

2. Shut down and start Mac, command + option + P + R to reset PRAM

After that, AirPort Utility now detects AirPort Time Capsule immediately, TM Backup never fails too.

Hope this helps.

I was having similar issues where my iMac would not connect to the time capsule (TC) through finder. It kept saying connection failed. However, the wifi was working perfectly and all my other devices were able to connect and share data. I went in my airport utility app on my iPhone, selected the TC, edit, advanced, file sharing and disks, and ensured "share on WAN port" was turned on. That fixed the issue for me.

Too bad, this didn't solve the problem, the same issue happened again...

I don't have any Wi-Fi or Internet issue, just Mac's AirPort Utility can't find AirPort Time Capsule, and TM Backups always failed.

If I switched to 2.4Ghz SSID, and switched back to 5Ghz, I was able to solve above problem temporary, the same issue came back after a while.

I seem to have found a solution to my iMac not finding the Time Capsule. Previously if I did a Factory reset on the TC and re-configured in Airport Utility, it then works until the mac is rebooted. So this time I :

did a factory reset on the TC

Opened Airport Utility, sected WiFi and the unconfigured TC

Named the network: MyNet

Named the base station: MyTimeCapsule

set a password

Configured the TC so light was green

Opened Network Preferences

Selected MyNet from the dropdown list ( my BT hub was selected by default)

Then selected Advanced, moved MyNet to the top of the list in Preferred Networks

then 'OK' and Apply

It now reboots and finds the TC and Time Machine is working normally.

If I select the BT hub as network the TC is not available. If MyNet is not at the top of the Preferred Networks list BT Hub is selected on reboot.

Heres hoping it keeps working

I'll add my voice to the chorus. I'm having the same problem as everyone else, but none of the suggested fixes seem to work. Backups are failing because the disk cannot be found on my new 2TB Time Capsule, the AirPort Utility can't find the TC on the network, etc. The TC always appears under Shared in the Finder sidebar, but I'm typically unable to connect to it. These problems are exclusive to my 2013 13" MacBook Air. My mid-2011 iMac does not exhibit these issues and both machines are running Yosemite. In fact, it seems that the MBA is only able to connect to the TC when the iMac has "awakened" it to perform a backup. AirPort Utility on my iPhone and iPad are also able to find the TC with no problem. Thankfully, my internet connection is unaffected and working as expected.

Spent a long hour with a senior apple support yesterday, he suggested creating a small partition and making a fresh install Yosemite on that, just to check and verify the same issue will happen again, I did so, Cmd+R, Disk Utility, "+" new partition, Back and selected Re-install OS from Internet, downloaded and installed 10.10 on the small partition...

Didn't install any apps on that fresh OS, stick on wireless 5Ghz, setup Time Machine only, everything looked OK. Played some time, closed the lid, next day the same issue came, although TM backup seems OK but AirPort Utility couldn't find Time Capsule.

So, it is OS issue?

I removed the temporary partition and back to my original OS, I disabled Wi-Fi, deleted all saved SSID, restarted Time Capsule via iPad AirPort Utility, shut down Mac, reset PRAM, started Mac and enabled Wi-Fi again. I don't what is the difference between doing these steps and installing a fresh OS, but situation seems to be much better now, Time Machine backups didn't fail so far, AirPort Utility may complain 2-3 times "Device not found" out of 10 try but if I hit Cmd+R to refresh AirPort Utility window, it could actually find the device.

I noticed this issue is very similar to another long thread in iTunes forum, many users complained iTunes Wi-Fi Sync couldn't find configured devices after some time. iTunes Wi-Fi Sync and AirPort Utility maybe use the same method to detect devices.

So, this is weird. I connected an AirPort Express to extend my network. For whatever reason, this seems to have ameliorated (not solved) the problems. When I open AirPort Utility on my MacBook Air, the newly added AirPort Express is located immediately (green light). The Time Capsule is sometimes recognized immediately; most often, I initially get a message that the TC was previously part of the network but can't be found. After nearly a minute, the TC is then found (green light). Once the AirPort Utility finds the TC, I can connect to it via the Finder sidebar and backup the computer. This is only temporary, however. After several minutes, the connection is again lost and I have to repeat the process by first having the AirPort Utility find the TC, etc. At least in my case, the problems seem to be isolated to my MBA and the Time Capsule. My iMac (connected only to WiFi) continues to find the TC and connect/backup just fine. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but I thought I'd share this additional information.

If you have multiple Routers, Home plugs attached on the same network, I think you can try to boot them in sequence, TC first, then home plug or wireless extender, not the other way round.

We often simply reboot TC but leave other devices online and result in AirPort/TM having problem finding TC, like myself, I never turned off my home plug when I restart TC... few hours ago I did a restart of my network in proper sequence, now everything looks quite OK, AirPort Utility hasn't complained for "device not found" after that.

After reading all the various attempts that seemed to end up not working I felt compelled to share my findings with everyone to hopefully help out with an "easier" solution.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite. I had also upgraded my internet security software (Cox Security Suite by McAfee) to the latest version (the app itself, 3.3 for Mac). It wasn't until I had to access my hard drive on my airport time capsule that I realized something was amiss and that brought me here.

  1. I opened Airport Utility and found the device not found message (even though my iMac is directly connected to it via an ethernet cable)
  2. All my wireless devices are seeing my wifi network and accessing the internet without problems, so this led me to look at my iMac
  3. I read through this thread and found the part about adding the Airport Utility and TC app to the exception/allow list of the firewall
  4. Since I have McAfee installed, my OS firewall is disabled; however, thinking there might be some settings in it for firewall exceptions, I enabled it and checked the list of apps - did not find airport utility or TC listed in the prompted apps for network access, so I disabled the OS firewall and looked towards McAfee settings (logic here: OS firewall off = settings have no effect on network traffic)
  5. McAfee has an Application Protection section with rules and exclusions.
    1. Rules are set to Allow all Apple signed binaries AND Unknown/Modified Applications was set to Allow (this had changed after the update from "PROMPT", so this got me thinking that other parts may have been altered... I'm on to something 🙂)
    2. I changed the Unknown/Modified applications BACK to PROMPT for so many seconds (allows me to see what apps are trying to access the internet and would help me to see if the Airport Utility would try as well)
  6. I tried relaunching Airport Utility. Same device not found error
  7. Under the Application Protection Exclusions section I added the Airport Utility app. Relaunched AU. Same error.
  8. Ok, so I came to the conclusion after this test that this part of the internet security software was not affecting the Airport Utility, so I checked out the firewall settings.
  9. In McAfee there is a network connections section that SHOWS my wifi network (another area validating the problem is caused by the firewall software). It has a setting for Type. This was set to Public with the message below it saying, "use for networks you don't trust".

The other setting here is "home or work", which is for trusted networks.

  10. With the McAfee firewall settings and the Airport Utility both open, I changed the network type from "Public" to "Home or Work" and the Time Capsule in the Airport Utility went green almost immediately.
  11. I also am able to access the files on my TC hard drive just as before.

No need to go through all the resetting when the symptoms (other devices seeing and connecting to the wifi network and internet properly) point to the firewall.

I don't believe this to be a problem with Yosemite either, in my opinion.

Hope this is helpful.

I don't have McAfee or other 3rd party firwall installed, only have the built-in firewall. Even I disabled it, it didn't solve the problem.

This issue (TC not found by AirPort Utility or Time Machine) is intermittent, if you try 10 times, you may have 2-3 successes. So it does not look a firewall issue else you won't have any chance to see TC.

I guess it is something to do with bonjour sleep proxy? I am not sure at all.
