Yosemite broke Apple TV mirroring

I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

I started experiencing this problem after I upgraded to Yosemite. A few days later I found this post, updated my apple tv software, and the problem was fixed. Now, several days later the problem seems to have returned. The only thing I'm certain that has changed is that I repaired my disk and disk permissions to try to get my iMac working properly. I was was experiencing problems with mail and shut down after the software upgrade.

Have Yosemite 10.10.1 running on a late 2013 iMac and have just updated the Apple TV software. The Apple TV appears on my Airplay menu but it does not allow me to select "Mirror iMac". "Extend Desktop" is always checked.

This just displays a black screen on the Apple TV - unless I play a movie with iTunes, then the Apple TV video and audio work through Airplay.

Display Preferences only shows one display. There does not seem to be a way to use the "extended desktop" with other Mac apps like Eye TV or Keynote. This is irritating...
