Yosemite broke Apple TV mirroring
I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

FWIW, the exact same issue here with my 27-inch iMac (Late 2012). Never been a problem mirroring to the Apple TV till now. Laptop mirrors no problem but the iMac only allowed the extend desktop option.
After reading through the thread I remembered I had installed the Duet app (terrible - never worked - waste of money) a while back and discovered that by doing the following it fixed the issue. Seems like third-party screen mirroring apps glitch the system (every now and then the sound & airplay icons would disappear from the menu bar - not sure if it's related but it happened):
I hope this helps.
Since Yosemite update to 10.10.3, I don't experience this issue any more.
But there is serious lagging problem from time to time.
I found a better way to stream any local MP4 video to Apple TV. See my github project: https://github.com/rickyzhang82/apple-juice
Running Yosemite 10.10.5 and it still won't let me select Mirroring. Extend desktop is blank screen.
This is how I resolved the mirroring issue.
1. sudo ifconfig awdl0 down.
2. sudo pkill -9 coreaudiod
3. log out your account and then log back in.
4. try mirroring again.
Please let me know if it solved your problem.
Can you be a little more descriptive?
A) Are 1 and 2 suppose to be done in the TERMINAL app?
B) Log out of WHAT account? itunes? icloud? what specifically?
I tried the Terminal commands and then logged out of iTunes and logged back in. Still cannot mirror the display to the ATV.
I am not able to sign out of iCloud because it will delete contacts, calendars and emails. I did try restarting the iMac but no change.
Sorry for not being specific.
Bullet no 3 refer to your iMac account.
I don't understand "iMac account". My logins are for iTunes and iCloud. I am unable to turn off iCloud.
I did try turning Homesharing off then logged back in but that did not fix it.
Logout your OS account and log back in.
Click the left top corner apple icon and click the logout. Is that clear?
I am not sure that Yosemite is the problem.
I have a brand new Macbook Air OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and a 2 year old Apple TV running 7.2. I have had the Macbook for a week. Last week it was happily playing video and (after a bit of fiddling around) audio through the Apple TV. This week, whenever I try the Airplay icon I get a message Could Not Connect to Apple TV.
I have changed nothing in that time. I have rebooted and reset everything and get the same result.
Surely if Yosemite was the problem - it would never have worked at all.
Yosemite is the one to blame. I have no problem at all in Mavericks.
What make the problem worse is that streaming from iMac is not smooth. I can notice video sluggish from time to time. This was never the case back in Mavericks. Why not downgrade to Mavericks if you really want a proof?
On the other hand, there is no problem at all airplay from iOS device, such as iPhone and iPad. I build a php website https://github.com/rickyzhang82/apple-juice to stream local video from my iPad to Apple TV. I'm sick of waiting for fix from Apple.
Just found in the Apple TV >Settings>Airplay>Security option which I switched to "Verified".
Next time I tried to connect, I was asked for an Airplay Code which the AppleTV provided (on the TV). Entered the code and bingo, everything worked.
Yes - thank you
I don't think I have ever used that logout before.
Tried it and mirroring is still not available!
I couldn't agree more. I "up"graded to Yosemite and my whole system began to fail. ATV lagged - if it connected at all - and even my local Wifi was terribly slow. Couldn't believe how much longer it took the computer to start up too.
Reverted to Mavricks and immediately all issues were solved.
My new imac 5k (just bought in june 2015 with yosemite) actually WORKED but it stopped and i think it was because of the IDisplay app too, but ive uninstalled it and it still doesnt work. I did a FULL uninstall too. Ive even done a reinstall of OSX yosemite too!!
however my macbook pro (with yosemite) works mirroring perfectly fine to my apple tv, and it has the iDisplay app on it.
crazy confusing.
