Why is Yosemite showing a load bar when I boot up my Mac(s)?

So I upgraded my somewhat newer (late 2013 model) MacBook Pro Retina to "Yosemite" and it's flawless except for one little thing, a thing that is a BIGGER thing on my OLDER (mid 2011 model) Mac Mini. Here's the problem. This LOADING (PROGRESS) BAR:

On my MacBook Pro Retina I get it after my login... It takes maybe 5 seconds. It's no big bother or anything but it is a bit less classy and faster than before... As seen HERE: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203308665013685&l=e27c3710e3

However, during the LENGTHY boot up process on my older Mac (the mid 2011 Mac Mini) I see the exact same loading bar -- except it takes a WHOLE LOT longer to pass by. Finally I'll be waiting for my top bar with the Apple logo in the left corner to load for about 30 seconds... This is reminiscent of the systray icons to load on a Windows 98+ era PC system... Boring and annoying to the user each time they have to boot up or even wake the Mac and login...

What gives?

I remember Macs booting up and loading instantaneously before on "Mavericks" and vice versa with OS X.

There is no problem, the progress bar is normal.

First off :

I never said it was a "PROBLEM" -- I was insinuating that it was just an unpleasant bit of time to wait and not very "sleek" or "speedy" of a boot up sequence in contrast to "Mavericks."

Second off:

This whole thread seems to totally have wondered off to a degree. The info about the MacRumors beta testers and videos on YouTube were ALL helpful though.

That's a bit much that you PAID to have AppleCare tell you to format your hard drive. ****, anyone could have told you to try that to fix it. Maybe it'd fix the fact running Yosemite on my Mac Mini doesn't even allow me to load iTunes unless I manually start a terminal process...

My point is here folks: "Yosemite" received months and months and months of beta testing yet it still has some major problems that aren't being addressed. This [the loading sequence] is not a "PROBLEM" per se; as I just mentioned in a previous reply. However, it's something that needs to be brought to their attention and we all need to try to discuss in a normal fashion. Always use these forums FIRST before you EVER waste your money and pay a "Genius" to help you.

Something like my iTunes not loading unless I go to some extreme and educated lengths to MAKE it load is a bit of an actual "PROBLEM" that I have heard can even be the case with the App Store. The TWO very most VITAL components of Mac OS; aside from obviously Finder and Safari...

does your hang on shut down or on restart

After booting, I also get a loading bar after entering my password, every time!

yes i did but i removed guest login and restarted again to check, it happened again 😟

The progress bar is normal, as is a black background.

Apple used to use the little spinning wheel, but you have no idea when the boot process is done. Now they use a progress bar.

I've been running the public beta and I got used to seeing the progress bar.

My Mac also hung during the install at the final reboot. After waiting an hour I restarted it and it booted up fine. But some websites are staying to wait. If you press Command-L you can see the progress of the installer.

I have a 2012 Mac Mini with a 480GB SSD running at 6GBs.

On a normal boot up, the progressive bar flies thru at about 8 to 10 seconds. Another 1 to 2 seconds and my user login as well as Guest login appears. In 35 seconds from pressing the button to me being totally logged in and windows open is about 45 seconds.

However, if I were to boot into Safe Mode by pressing and holding the shift key. The progressive bar is noticeably slower. Once I've determine that it's in safe boot, I let go of the shift key. For safe boot, it takes about 20 plus seconds for the progressive bar to load. For a total boot into safe boot it takes a little over a minute. At the login screen it says "Safe Boot" in red in the upper right corner. However once loaded up, the windows have a little square in each of the corner that appears to be a hole. As the background is shown through them. And the system is very slow.

Booting into normal mode and everything is fine.

I too have been seeing this happen after upgrading a 13" rMBP (Late 2013) to Yosemite - a progress bar appears for 5-8 seconds before the desktop loads. It wasn't a big issue but it was starting to make me wonder.

After reading through this thread, I noticed one thing I did differently this time around; I opted to enable FileVault during the post-install wizard. I never had this enabled with Mavericks and as such did not see any progress bars during the login process.

Earlier today, I upgraded a 15" MBP (Early 2011) to Yosemite and left FileVault disabled during the post-install wizard. Low and behold, no progress bars showed up during the login process.

So I'm taking a guess here that if you're seeing progress bars - it's probably due to FileVault being enabled and performing some sort of initialization.

Hi There,

After going through all the threads, I am sharing my pain and agony.

I updated to Yosemite yesterday. It took ages to progress the white bar below apple logo against black background while restarting during update.

I thought, it was normal, so awaited for more than 2-3 hours.

Then, somehow, screen showed up, it played around, did some normal stuffs and shut down iMac.

Then, I woke up this morning, wanted to work and switched on but... its been more than an hour the bar has stucked in 1/3 below apple logo. Its not showing any progress.

How can we work if every time it takes hours and hours just to boot up?

Apple says, most advanced OS, but this nonsense is making me crazy.

I am extremely disappointed and developing hatred for apple products, now.

Still the bars is not progressing.... seems like I will have to wait for a day

U P D A T E

I got annoyed and did power switch on and off couple of time and suddenly login screen showed up.

Then, after playing around for a minute, switched off iMac and restrated.

This time, the bars stayed for couple of minutes only.
