Why is Yosemite showing a load bar when I boot up my Mac(s)?

I have this issue too on my 4 month old iMac

No Mac ever started instantaneously, even the fastest of todays SSD equipped Macs take 15 to 30 seconds, older ones took longer (especially ones with a hard drive)

It's change for the sake of it. Apple has to come up with new stuff about every 6 months, or die. Even if the new stuff is not an improvement on what came before. People want new stuff. If Apple ever stops inventing new stuff, it will be the end of Apple. Trouble is, it's getting harder and harder to do anything that's genuinely new.

The loading wheel was around for 10 years plus, it has been changed exactly once (now).

No Filevault but I get progress bar.

I have the progress bar also, but i initially thought it happened as a result of me dual booting / boot camp with Windoze 8 after installing Yosemite. The bar itself is only onscreen for a few seconds, and obviously doesn't indicate sinister goings on with your mac or disk - so calm down fear fearmongers. 😁

The progress bar at boot may be perfectly normal, but having it hang for over 8 hours at about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, with a spinning beachball, cannot possibly be normal. After a lot of time trying everything I could think of and 800-APL-CARE could think of, I finally erased the disk, did a clean install, at which point it booted normally, but then I allowed Migration Assistant to bring my apps, personal stuff, and network settings back from my most recent Time Machine backup, and it went right back to multi-hour hangs. That's it. After three days of this I'm done with Yosemite for the foreseeable future. I've erased the disk yet again, booted off the recovery partition, and am doing a restore from Time Machine, that will thankfully take me back to Mavericks. It's saying that in a bit over 26 hours I'll have my Mac back, finally. I've been using Macs since about 1986 and this is the first time I've ever encountered an OS release this completely broken.

If anyone hears of an update for Yosemite that actually fixes this problem, please post. Otherwise I'm stuck on Mavericks, even though this is a latest, or nearly latest generation MacPro ("Late 2013", the cylindrical model).

Well I don't know about this bar making booting feel faster, it's quite the opposite to me: It feels much slower.

Previously, I would get the spinning wheel for hardly any time and sometimes not at all. Now I get the bar for perhaps 2 or 3 seconds. I am sure it's a slower boot process than it used to be.

And aesthetically, it's pretty yuck as well. In fact I think the whole OS is aesthetically pretty yuck if I am honest. I hate the blue folders; I don't like the flat icons - the previous ones were nicer imho; we still have the grey icons at the side in Finder favorites; and I don't like how you get Safari in and out of full screen mode.]

I hope the OS has some architectural improvements under the covers, or it's a waste of time as far as I am concerned.

I have the same hang on shut down or on restart on my iMac, dock just hides in a half.

I've seen that on Mavericks too.

Yes have same thing on Mavericks when just update the OS to it. Сlean install solved this problem but not with Yosemite

I switched the iMac (4 months old) power on and its been more than 10 minutes the progress bar below apple logo against black background is still not moving ahead.

Seems like I will have to more than an hour...

Apple has to come up with the update to solve this problem.

I don't know when the desktop screen will appear

It seems like one has to switch on the power 1-2 hours before you intend to work on Yosemite updated Mac.

That's because the problem is in your previous installation, that's why it workied until you migrated it back to your new installation.

Don't migrate anything except data files.
