TimeMachine backups are not accessible after the clean install of Yosemite

Guys, I did clean install with HD formatting (as I usually do) and installed the final Yosemite version. I have AirCapsule Time Machine , but after the clean installation - the time machine is not accessible. I can see the folder Data, inside the .sparsebundle file, but while clicking on it it shows: "Sparse bundle - resource temporarily unavailable". If open Time Machine itself - it shows me the time dates of the stored backups but cannot access them. I read a lot of forums how to fix it, but no results.. I did and Backup verification and repair (from the disk utility), all seems OK, but cannot access them.... Strange... Any help and ideas are highly appreciated User uploaded file thanks (opened the same thread in Yosemite forum, but think here is the right place)

So I am good to go. It finally worked.

However there were lots of permissions issues. Use Migration Assistant to make your account the same as the one on the backup.

But also you need to explore the folders in the old backup and check for locked files. If you find them, 'add administrators' and give read/write privileges. And check the button that says 'do it to all containing folders'.

This should work. It was quite the hassle. If I had to do it over again, I would restore from the backup and afterwards upgrade to yosemite.

Just had a weird glitch with Dropbox today whereby files and folders disappeared but I thought "It's ok. Everything is Time Machined. I'm fine!" only to discover that my backups on the Time Machine only extend to the last two days... which is shocking, to say the least.

I know for a fact that a few days ago I saw that my 750GB external TM drive was down to about 8GB free and now there is suddenly 82GB free, plus a never before seen folder called "lost+found" next to the Backups.backupdb folder. What is it and where did it come from?

Fortunately, Dropbox has the "Restore Files and Folders" feature so hopefully nothing is lost but this Time Machine glitch is a horrible eye opener - all of a sudden I cannot rely on my backups extending back at least a few months, like I have entrusted it to do for years.

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have had a whole bunch of... seemingly trivial... glitches and bugs (dropbox syncing errors, re-establishing Apache and a local test-server issues plus a few other minor irritants) that have now all added up to leave me anxious about what new problem is going to manifest.

For example, in trying to view any Time Machine logs that might give a clue as to when or why the backups have disappeared I opened Console only to find that the console window doesn't appear. Anywhere. Even new ones.

I'm not a geek and have no idea how Console might help me but i was simply following the instructions in this link http://www.macworld.com/article/1131534/tmeye.html but Yosemite is not doing what I think it should.

Apologies for my rant but this has been a heart-stopping few hours here trying to salvage current and past work. And, at the end of the day it still relates to the original question, my Time Machine backups are compromised since installing Yosemite.

Has anyone been able to confirm that you can't use a Time Machine backup (from Mavericks) on a clean install of Yosemite ?

Am I crazy to want to do a clean install then add my software and files?

Am I going to have to just upgrade to Yosemite, then use time machine, then do a clean install of Yosemite then use time machine to import my files?

Jul 29, 2015 3:50 PM in response to kmilarov

The problem about time machine resource temporarily unavailable normaly is because the last backup has been finished.

There are a ext file ".InProgress" that must be erased.

To do this, first use "Airport Utility" in the folder Utilities, uncheck the shared disk, click Apply, check shared again and Apply again.

Now with Finder you can go in the TimeMachine em erader the "InProgress" file

I need to see some mails which I backed up at a date in the past since I have no more access to this account (Work mails). How to retrieve them from an inaccessible Timemachine backup?

We can only help if you tell us what why and wherefore of your problem.

If the TM backup is inaccessible.. first step is to work out a way to access it.

To do that you need to tell us how, where and on what the TM backup exists.. and how you have tried to access it.

Did you try to do it directly from finder??

Do you have permissions issues?

Once we work out how to get into the backup then we can work out how to restore the emails.

See the section on email for particular help.. assuming you are talking about apple mail.. which again you haven't made specific.

Jan 20, 2016 3:43 PM in response to LaPastenague

Hi LaPastenague! Thanks for the reply.

I have an external hard disk where I usually store my time machine backups from time to time. beginning this year I changed my internal HDD for a SSD. Since my old HDD was all cluttered I decided to start clean with my SSD. I think all the problems started there.

At least I was able to install OS X (but still there is an unidentifiable problem with App store connecting to internet)

The issue with my backup hard disk is, I can access the documents, photos..etc through finder. No problem at all. But what is inaccessible or greyed out is the backed up versions of my old computer (old HDD's backups) I couldn't restore my safari settings (all the login iDs and pw stored in keychain- i didn't want to put them on cloud for a security reason) and the mails I had in my Apple mail client.

For your diagnostics purpose I am posting the system log queries while I was trying to reach my mail backups from my external hard drive through TM.

There are too many errors for me to follow what is happening.

You are going to need to try and do a full recovery.

The method you have been doing backups is not going to get good results.. so you need to understand this is going to be problematic at best.

I presume this computer is the same one used to create the TM backup you are attempting to recover. I presume also you have the account access password.

Plug the Hard Disk with the TM backup you want to recover.

Plug a blank hard disk into the computer that you will recover the install to.

Boot the computer to the recovery partition.

Start TM and go to the TM backup at a suitable date where your emails etc can be found.

Recover the entire install to the USB drive you have now designated as the target.

Migration Assistant Help

The first part of this is how to use migration.

The second part is how to use boot recovery and total restore of the TM backup to a different target drive.

I recommend you use the later.

Please follow that because I put a lot of effort into the screenshots to make it easy (as possible) to follow.. when TM acts bonkers as it does a lot now.

Once you have a full restore to the disk you can then simply copy and paste the file from the restored disk to your normal mail. You might even be able to boot from it.. if it is the same computer.

Hi kmilarov,

I am struggling too access a sparse bundle after I had to create a new wi-fi network at home, any time capsule saved before the new network is not appearing when I open time capsule. I have followed your instructions that you posted and would like to know if the screen grab is what i should expect to see as the bands folder loads?
