iTunes 12 will not allow movies to be added

Older Mac Pro, OS 10.7.5, iTunes 12.0.1.26.

Permissions repaired, directory checked, no problems.

Hard drive is OK, plenty of space.

Been using this computer for a couple years now as my Apple TV streaming source.

---

The only movies I can appear to add are those with mp4 extension or ones I created using iMovie. Movies I have already had and added to my library that have m4v extension still remain in the library (on my media drive, so designated by iTunes Preferences and reverified that it has not changed).

Also, I cannot drag and drop even those movies that Ad File to Library will add.

So, I am just guessing, Apple has messed something up with this release.

--- A side note, on my newer Mac Pro running Yosemite and iTunes 12.0.1.26 I have the same problem. Apple did a nice job with allowing my "registered computers" to be automatically logged in to without having to enter my info. That aside, I can navigate to my other computer's media drive, select the movie - an mp4 - and it does not add to the iTunes on my Yosemite computer! Yes, I waited an appropriate time to allow cross computer getting the file, it did not appear in the reading bar.

--

I used to be able to Handbrake my movies to mp4, even with the m4v extension, and drag them onto the iTunes window and they would add. I could then Get Info and get them into the correct Genre.

-----

So, despite following the help and what and doing all the proper checks….

Just how does one add mp4 or m4v movies to the NEW iTunes?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 2007 machine

Having the same problem!

Before the update I have been adding all my .mp4 and .m4v files in iTunes. Now some of them do not get added!!! VERY FRUSTRATING!

Also some of my movies won't take artwork that I am trying to add! Ive tried everything I know to get it to work, but still won't work. Ive made copies of the artwork on my desktop and then tried adding by "add artwork" - doesnt work - copy and paste - doesn't work - only on some of the files

others accept just fine!

Im not liking this! Ive tried re-converting to .mp4 and still nothing! Its getting old!!!

I'd like to get these movies in iTunes so I can watch on my AppleTV without having to airplay - cuz that lags like crazy!

HELP!!!

I am not sure if this will work for anyone else...but mine just started working. I have a shared disk on my network that I was sharing them from - but nothing after the upgrade same as you all - suddenly quicktime player wanted to open them and iTunes having the same symptoms as posted here. Anyway, I opened a movie.m4v in Quicktime Player and then did File>Export>IPad,iPhone,iPod Touch and the whole shebang.... as soon as this started processing, iTunes refreshed, and suddenly my entire library - that I had been repeatedly trying to import - shows up...good to go works everywhere. Hope this works for someone...

I believe the issue has now been solved - Apple released iTunes 12.0.1.26 yesterday.

---

Now all appears to be working as they had, with the only exception being the user interface changes.

So, new imported movies will mostly end up in Home Videos unless their info regarding iTunes had been previously changed. No more Unknown Genre then make changes.

Is Apple f***ing kidding or what? Has QA died along with Steve Jobs?

How can you release a new iTunes version and not check if adding songs and movies works properly? I use iTunes as a library for all my music and movies and play them via two Apple TV's. I have spent a fortune buying Apple products and now I can't even expand my library anymore.

I have upgraded all my software to the latest versions (IOS 8.1, iTunes 12.0.1.26 and OS X Yosemite) and it is simply impossible to add movies to my library.

I just can't believe this s**t. Thank you Apple, a job well done.

I discovered this to be my problem as well. iTunes appears to add all of my movies ripped from DVDs as Home Movies by default. What is the drag and drop method? I'm planning to use an Apple Script from Doug's Apple Scripts to change the file kind to Movie. If there's and easier way, I'd love to hear it. One thing I have noticed, in spite of changing the kind to Movie, and having the movie appear in the Movies section of iTunes the movie file itself remains in the Home Movies folder in the Finder. There is no Movies folder at all.

Yes, I found the same thing...iTunes 12 is adding movies and tv shows to the Home Movies section. The process for adding tv shows and movies is pretty ridiculous compared to what it used to be. I had to find the tv shows/movies in the Home Movies section, then highlight them all and use the Get Info command to change them to a TV SHOW...now, you used to have the option of also adding the shows name and season here, but alas, Apple has removed that option. Now you must first wait for iTunes to update all the items, THEN go back and highlight them again and add the tv show name and the season number....kind of a pain in the ***.

I also noticed that using the OPTION+Drop method now makes iTunes copy every item into a new folder, instead of just adding the alias and using the current location of the file. Now you simply drag and drop the items and it creates an alias. Gotta love Apple for changing things just for the fact of changing them...
