Iphoto and Yosemite update

Updated my iMac and MacBook Air to OS X Yosemite. Everything seems okay except iPhoto. First it said needed to upgrade to an older version - now it says that in order to open iPhoto I need to update to the latest version and go to App Store. My iPhoto has over 30,000 photos of my kids growing up... I'm scared to update without checking first because when going to App Store, it does not prompt me to update, but to download for free iPhoto... If I do that, does it move all my photos automatically? If anybody else went through this process too, can you please advise?

To be able to use iPhoto with Yosemite you need to install iPhoto 9.6.

Which version of iPhoto do you have currently?

Before you do any upgrading make a backup of your iPhoto Library. That is always best practice when upgrading any software. By default your iPhoto Library will be in the Pictures folder.

If you are currently running iPhoto '11, you should be seeing the update on the "Updates" page of the App Store.

That means probably, that you installed an older version, but own a copy of the newest version. If the version you are seeing at the AppStore for free is iPhoto 9.6, install it.

Then double-click your iPhoto Library to open it in iPhoto 9.6. This will upgrade the library to the new format.

Thank you, Terence, for your response. I'm sorry that in the "hundreds of threads on the forum", none of the answers have worked for me. The purchase option isn't available because I didn't purchase it. I do know how to unhide purchases, though, and that would be a good option had I the good fortune to have done so (this had been a problem for me one time with iTunes). Unfortunately, although I have my photos backed up of course, I prefer the iPhoto software, and am disappointed I had no notice nor was given the option not to upgrade. I realize this wouldn't help me long term. However, it's the principle of it for me.

Also, in regards to your link, I got this message:

Gotta love Apple. I have such a love/hate relationship with them. I do appreciate your time and effort in trying to help, though.

If you're getting that message then you have a whole other set of issues as that's a link to a bog standard web page. I don;t think that issue is at Apple's end. That may also be related to the issue with the App Store - assuming you're signed in, of course, with the ID you used to set up the machine.

You were given notice, the 9.6.1 update precedes the 10.103 update, and of course you have the option to not upgrade.

I have the same issue as described.
I have iPhoto 9.5.1 . I can upgrade it through the App Store, assuming the upgrade is iPhoto and NOT Photo for Yosemite (I don't have Yosemite - was concerned about compatibility issues). BUT I have additional iPhoto libraries on two external hard drives - how do I upgrade these? I was going to put the entire set of libraries on one drive. Should I do that and THEN upgrade the iPhoto? I have loaded the photos onto cloud servers as well (I don't want to lose them) so have back ups covered.

Any advice for me?

I didn't purchase 9.5.1 iPhoto either, but was listed under purchased in iTunes as it was a free upgrade. So.....if you follow the directions here as I did....backup a copy of 9.5.1...then trash the application (not the iPhoto library).....then restart your machine....then go to iTunes you might see it/be able to install iPhoto 9.6.1 which is what you need with this need OS. Now....I tried this and it didn't work, so out of frustration I went to help area and started an online CHAT about "not being able to reinstall iPhoto from my iTunes store.....(knowing that if I could reinstall, the newest version would download)....and an Apple Tech used screen share and walked me through the process. It was easy to follow the onscreen directions she gave me....a few clicks and I was good and am now enjoying using my iPhoto again. It did take about an hour for iPhoto 9.6.1 to download....but that was just fine with me. Then I put an alias back in my dock and all worked PERFECT!
