Iphoto and Yosemite update

Updated my iMac and MacBook Air to OS X Yosemite. Everything seems okay except iPhoto. First it said needed to upgrade to an older version - now it says that in order to open iPhoto I need to update to the latest version and go to App Store. My iPhoto has over 30,000 photos of my kids growing up... I'm scared to update without checking first because when going to App Store, it does not prompt me to update, but to download for free iPhoto... If I do that, does it move all my photos automatically? If anybody else went through this process too, can you please advise?

To be able to use iPhoto with Yosemite you need to install iPhoto 9.6.

Which version of iPhoto do you have currently?

Before you do any upgrading make a backup of your iPhoto Library. That is always best practice when upgrading any software. By default your iPhoto Library will be in the Pictures folder.

If you are currently running iPhoto '11, you should be seeing the update on the "Updates" page of the App Store.

That means probably, that you installed an older version, but own a copy of the newest version. If the version you are seeing at the AppStore for free is iPhoto 9.6, install it.

Then double-click your iPhoto Library to open it in iPhoto 9.6. This will upgrade the library to the new format.

I did this and the new "photos " app then replaced iPhoto.

Have you looked carefully?

The update only adds the Photos icon to the Dock and removed the iPhoto icon. Drag iPhoto from your Applications folder to the Dock to add it back and you are done.

Only, any iPhoto version earlier than iPhoto 9.6.1 is not fully compatible with MacOS X 10.10.3. If your iPhoto is older, update to version 9.6.1, using the link LarryHN posted.

Or look at this User Tip: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

And, as has been posted on hundreds of threads on the forum up to now:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
