Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail - any solutions?

I notice that Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail. After running for some hours, I noticed there were 6 emails in my Gmail account that had not synced over the past hour.

In the meanwhile, for safety's sake (don't want to miss emails!) I'm back to Mailplane. But I wonder if anybody knows of a solution to this long term problem first introduced in Mavericks. Works fine in iOS Mail though.

Thanks,

I honestly believe you're having these problems, but with probably at least hundreds of thousands of people using Gmail with Apple Mail, I would think these discussion groups would be filled by now if they were all experiencing this. Ever since you and I first started discussing this, I've been watching Gmail and Apple Mail carefully and I honestly have not seen one single sync problem, nor now any Time Machine problems. Do you have any other Macs there on which you could see if you're also experiencing this?

The sync problem, admittedly, does not occur often. That is why I didn't even notice it for over a week after upgrading to Yosemite. But then one day I noticed there were 5 mails waiting for me in my Gmail box (I could see them in iOS Mail). Eventually they came in to Mail, but it took about 7 hours!

So the problem is sporadic. Nevertheless, it's important if you are waiting for work mail.

Anyway, I'm testing it again.

As far as Time Machine - it's a complete wreck with my Mail folders! But I wrote about this in my other thread. Best not to digress here. Still, I'm amazed if you aren't seeing it happen!

I don't really have another Mac to test the Time Machine problem with because the backup iMac doesn't run its own Time Machine.

It's happening again now. In one of my Gmail accounts there are two unread mails sitting there for the past 50 minutes. I can see they are there in iOS Mail on my iPhone. But they still haven't come in to Apple Mail.

There are definitely sync problems with Gmail still.

I don't know why the OS X Mail team can't talk with the iOS Mail team and figure out what they are doing wrong here.

Back to Mailplane for now I guess.

It's a shame, Julien, because Apple Mail is visually much more pleasant than Mailplane. And windows and image pasting and lots of other stuff work better in Mail.

However it's true that sometimes Gmail mail will get stuck for hours and not come over. So if that is most important the only solution I've found so far is MailPlane.

I find myself switching back and forth between the two. If I need to relax I use Mail. If I can see emails are not coming through (usually by checking with iOS) and need something dependable, even though it's harder to use, I go back to MailPlane for a while.

Doug, so you know that you're not alone, I too am experiencing the same issues.

I use Yosemite Mail to monitor about eight active Gmail accounts using IMAP, and every few days I'll notice that some accounts in the Mail client are not reflecting what's on the Gmail server. Taking the account off line and then back online always forces Mail to catch back up, as does quitting and relaunching. Left alone, Mail also seems to fix things by itself, though I've seen it be late by as much as twelve hours.

I remember this same problem with the early version of Mavericks Mail, but an update eventually resolved it. I've been searching for any posts of folks with effective work-arounds, but have yet to learn anything more than what you've shared here.

JD,

I haven't found that quitting and relaunching helps, but I haven't tried taking the account offline and online.

There are things in Mail that work much better than in Mailplane - for example formatting, and handling of inline images. And it looks better.

I find myself going back to Mail and then when it doesn't synch I switch back to Mailplane again because the bottom line, of course, is I have to get the mail.

I also like the Mailplane/Gmail shortcuts for labeling and archiving by just pressing V. It's easier to file stuff in Mailplane. Mail has that awkward shortcut of CMD+Shift+? then enter some letters and then press the cursor down to select move to a mailbox. But it doesn't work as well as the Gmail shortcuts.

But when I have to add multiple images to an email, Mailplane is really cumbersome to use, requiring multiple clicks and settings for each image. Mail is much faster and easier to use for that.

Also Mail allows for multiple signatures per account, which is useful.

What I want is Mail, with reliable synching, and easy filing and go-to-mailbox shortcuts.

I wonder what Outlook will be like in the next version of Office.

It seems to be what they say:

Available for OSX, iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Add all your Gmail, Google Apps, and iCloud accounts to enjoy a simple, unified inbox.

I also have a couple of "generic IMAP" accounts. Of course I can't access those with Mailplane either - unless I forward to a Gmail account set up for that purpose, which is always possible. I've done that in the past.

Have you tried it? Does it have shortcuts for filing away emails? Is it basically a "shell around a browser" like Mailplane, or does it store the email on your computer like Mail does?

Thanks,

It has a Spam box.. And your normal Mailbox..

You can sort out your main in archive or Later by dragging it left or right...

It helps you sort out mail with todo lists... You can set-up mail to sort of show up later so you can deal with it...

i.e. somebody might say your appointment is at 8pm tomorrow... And you want your mail to show up or remind you at 7pm the next day or in the morning of the same day...

Its sort of integrating to do lists...

Im am still using apple mail... I am happy with the whole notification/yosemite integration..

My todo list's are covered by Wunderlist and Evernote at the moment.. Evernote is an amazing program.. I can email a mail to Evernote specific email and catagorise it, and set up reminders etc... Evernote pretty much helps with everything i do.

But I am checking out Mailbox carefully for the future.. It seems promising... I like dropbox so i decided to give it a chance. Wont jump into it yet.. But playing with it.

Just thought I would let you know about it since you are actively looking for other options.

Since it is still a beta I wouldnt necessarily recomend switching right now...

But I thought it was a very well thought out approach to organise and act on mail from multiple accounts.

Just thought I would give you a heads up. It may be solid contender in your search for something that suits you. So far I like what I see..

There is a learning curve in using it correctly however. Its a bit different to your std. mail apps..
