Same problem here. Download went fine but install stuck on gray screen with Apple logo and narrow progress bar. Bar just started to fill and then installation stuck for 2+ hours. I looked up some suggestions, and this is what worked for me:

1. Force quit

2. Startup from recovery disk

3. Use Disk Utility to verify your hard disk.

4. Restart from old operating system (in my case 10.9.5)

5. Find Yosemite installer in Applications

6. Restart installer

--worked perfectly. I cannot explain this and wouldn't recommend it, but others seem to have had the same experience.

Good luck.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. My understanding is that if you are running an operating system that is Lion or newer, it includes Recovery (which is not a separate disk.) Please read:

OS X: About OS X Recovery

After forcing quit, I restarted holding down the O key, which gave me the option of starting from the Yosemite Installer or my 10.9.5 Recovery "disk." Had I read the above article first, I could have gotten there more directly by following the instructions in the article.

Hope this helps!

Had same issue with a MPB mid-2010.

Have given it some time (well over 11 hours) to restart, but after it had remained halfway the small progress bar I forced a reboot by keeping the power button down. Somehow that helped it nudge past the issue and it started 10.10. Slightly easier than the previous upgrade to Mavericks, which looks an awful lot like what's being described here with pressing clever key combinations in an attempt to get Disk Utility to do its wholesome work.

  1. The upgrade installer should offer the option to make a USB "hot start" drive, just in case.
  2. And Disk Utility should identify & fix any issues *before* a new OS installer can get stuck.

Hi

I did not have a recovery disc either

What I did was switch off my computer

before switching on I held the ALT key down switch on still holding the ALT key down and i got two boxes one had Mac HD and the second Had recover. before choosing the box i signed into my internet provider

then choosing recovery box

this takes you into disc Utilities

make sure your mac hd is checked and make sure there are no disc errors its the bottom right button sorry can't remember what is called it should come up green if all is well then go over to permission to repair button on the bottom middle once all that is finished

close window and then click on recover OS X and the computer does the rest

its a bit of a pain it took me about 1 to 1/2 to get it back up and running

hope this helps

ok I've had a nightmare but seem sorted now.

I didn't have a back up so lesson now learnt.

I tried a couple of suggestions already posted, rebooting, cmd r and wireless issue this did not resolve. Cmd L did not work.

after several reboots I did eventually get in with Yosemite loaded. All seemed ok but on next reboot it started to load again and got stuck. It remained so overnight.

read a few more posts on different sites. Noted MacAfee was a potential issue. So went in via safe mode holding shift, cleared a couple if start items as suggested in the post above and also removed MacAfee.

I have since restarted a couple of times without issue. Not sure exactly what fixed it but doing a combination of previous advised posts I git there.

off to buy a hard drive to do full back up.

Sorry. I hadn't got any connection to internet available in order to say thank you all, until now. I could finally install the Yosemite. Simply I have entered in safe mode (holding down the shift key) and "voilà" the problem fixed. I was to try any of the solutions posted here (thanks pomme-homme, gazsmash and Megs ICT Tutor), but there was no need. Thank you all

I tried this but when I connect to my internet and run the recovery drive it just goes right back to the gray progress bar and stuck at around 50%, I've also tried many times unsuccessfully to start up in safe mode but I'm either doing it incorrectly or it just isn't working... any suggestions would be great. I'm on day two of being stuck on this awful progress bar screen. My last backup of my computer was like early 2014 and I'd really like to avoid restoring back to that if possible.

Sorry you are having trouble. Perhaps we are not talking about the same "recovery disk" because I don't think you have to be connected to the internet to use this feature of all OSX operating systems since Lion.

1. Do a hard restart (hold down power switch until computer shuts down)

2. Then start with power switch holding down "O" key.

3. This should give you the option to startup from either your Yosemite installer OR your Recovery Disk

4. Choose the Recovery Disk and run Disk Utility to verify and/or repair the disk as needed.

5. Restart normally and try the Yosemite installer again...it should be in your Applications folder.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your reply Csound1. I've been thinking about your question about what I did that's off page. I can't think of anything. I made sure I had the current version of Mavericks installed and that any other recommended updates were installed. I then did a permission repair on the system drive. Then I attempted the download and install of Yosemite. It got through what seemed like most of the install and then just froze. Period. Nothing. I pressed CMD-L to try to see if the computer was doing anything. Nothing. So I tried a manual power down. Back on and, again, nothing.

I then rebooted from a backup external drive and did a restore back to Mavericks using SuperDuper.

Would appreciate any recommendations.

Download a copy of Etrecheck, it will help identify what is running, or failing to run. Removing them is manual, and must be done exactly as per the vendors instructions. Some can be difficult to remove.

What is the point of waiting for 10.10.1, if these vendors couldn't get ready for 10.10 (after plenty of time to) I doubt that they will bother to keep up with the point upgrades either.

It is their job to write their code for use on OSX, not the other way around.
