Messages.app/Facetime Broken/Not-Working in Yosemite 10.10

Hi all.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having a problem with Messages.app/iMessage/Facetime after upgrading/installing Yosemite (the release version)? My Messages doesn't work.

The Problems

(A) Specifically, when you enter your AppleID in Messages.app->Preferences->Accounts->iMessagesAccount you get the following error:

Quote:

Could not sign in to iMessage.
Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.
Sometimes the error says it cannot activate.

(B) Also, oddly, FaceTime makes me enter my AppleID every time i reboot, but will work for Video FaceTime chats, but not audio? And once I reboot, it again asks me for my AppleID.

My Setup

I have a 2010 Mac Pro.

My Mac Pro is not stock, but nothing that's in there *should* cause a problem, so I wonder if anyone else is having a similar issue. My non stock hardware is:
  1. --MacVidCard 802.11ac and bluetooth 4.0 upgrade card (http://www.macvidcards.com/store/p33...port_Card.html)
  2. --VisionTek 7750 Eyefinity 6 2GB card (https://www.visiontek.com/graphics-c...rd-detail.html)
  3. --OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 SSD (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/P...Accelsior/RAID)
  4. --Inateck 4 port PCI-E to USB 3.0 card (which has requires no drivers and is a pretty compatible card) (http://www.inateck.com/inateck-kt400...er-connection/)
  5. --Upgraded the 12-core 2.66ghz motherboard to 12-core 3.46 west mere x5690 xenon (turnkey OWC upgrade) (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/turnk...Xeon_Processor)
Here is some of the troubleshooting I've already done:
  1. I tried making a new guest account and tried to login there, and went so far as to install a clean install on a blank external drive with similar results.

The only caveat is when you make the new guest account of fresh install, when you first put in your AppleID it almost kinda succeeds. You initially see the screen where Messages tells you it's associating your phone number and a few email addresses together. But if you try to use Messages, nothing gets through, and when you quit and re-run the app, you get that same 'could not sign in' error.

  2. Went through the stuff here to no avail:

messages "An error occurred while activating. Try again later"

  3. My serial number does show in about this Mac.
  4. Messages/iMessage/Facetime all work(ed) fine under 10.9.x on the Mac Pro, so it should not be a hardware issue, as I didn't change any hardware over after upgrading.
  5. I installed Yosemite on my 2013 13" Macbook Pro and Messages/Facetime all work fine, so it's likely nothing to do with my network.
  6. I have confirmed that others that have done the MacVidCard 802.11ac/bluetooth upgrade are not experiencing this issue.
  7. Same with the USB card.
  8. Since I installed a fresh OS on an external drive, I doubt the OWC Accelsior has anything to do with this.
  9. I called apple support, and they are stumped and getting engineers to figure it out. One support guy at apple said the broken Messages.app problems were his only unresolvable problem he was getting this since Yosemite launched (and that it has been an exceptionally smooth launch), and had 4 calls on the same issue early morning the day after launch (he's one level up from the entry support folks and the only level above him are the actual software engineers).
  10. The video card seems highly unlikely to matter here. Then again, I'm not sure the hardware should matter at all...Which leaves me with...

My Suspicion

I think there may be an interplay between 2 things going on. One, although I haven't changed my motherboard, perhaps changing the processor tray makes something fail with the Messages authentication? And second, perhaps there is some corrupted data up on iCloud that alone or in combination with the processor tray, is tripping up Messages verification? The solution might be to bring my machine in and have them do some magic to make the serial number authorized on their system?

Appreciate any thoughts and thanks for any help. Thanks!

I've tried it all Ralph ....to no avail. In addition, I am getting this window when I switch my "Status" to "Available" (which is the only thing I can do in that menu ...no preferences, no log in, etc.):

I have tried my Google password and my Apple ID password ...neither works. Do you have any idea what's up with this??

I think this may be an Apple issue and we'll just have to wait for the update.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Hi,

I am not sure how Linc follows Threads after a few days or weeks have passed.

This bit is to do with the Messages app:-

10/30/14 8:44:27.218 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent)

The _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is not available on this platform.

The IMFoundation item includes the subsection IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent which does the Login for the iMessages Account.

It part of the various Frameworks in Hard Drive Name/Library/Frameworks.

In here are many items that "support" the Messages app.

The _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is new to me and I an not entirely sure where it links in at the moment.

As you said you have performed a Fresh Install of the OS I am not sure what to suggest next.

I checked my Console App and I also have the same message

User uploaded file

As I am logging in 11 accounts in total across AIM, Jabber and Yahoo as well as the iMessages and Bonjour accounts it would seems to one of those "of little importance" messages.

However Linc is much better at reading the Logs and reports than I am and hopefully he will come back.

Hi,

if we are talking about a Jabber (Google) account in Messages and ity will not login you will have to go to Google and your Account Settings there.

The Messages app uses SSL to login to the talk.google.com server.

Google thinks this is now Old hat.

Your have to go to your Account settings and change to Allow Less Secure Logins

This is because Google now use Auth One for their own apps and say that everything else is "less Secure".

If you are using Two Step Verification that will have to be turned Off to allow you to set the Less Secure option.

Thanks again, Ralph ....but, I have switched to "less secure" and am not using Two Step Verification. Still not working.

I'm unclear on why Messages has anything to do with Google. I have four gmail accounts and would try another account link ....but Message does not give me a log in opportunity when I launch the application. And, upon launch, I do not have access to preferences because I am not logged in ....classic Catch-22.

I truly appreciate your help ....and will keep watching this site in case someone comes up with the magic answer for me.

hi,

History lesson on iChat through Messages (short version - accounts and not features)

iChat 1 was text only and worked with AIM.

At that time Apple and AIM came to an agreement that Apple ID issued by Apple (Now includes @mac.com @me.com and @iCloud.com) could be recognised as valid AIM Screen names.

The App also had the Bonjour account (called Rendezvous back then)

At iChat 3 Jabber was added.

Due to Google's Naming issue this required a tweak to link to Google (Google Talk is a Jabber server)

At iChat 4 Apple added a separate option to add Google Accounts.

iChat 6 adds Yahoo for Text only (not even File Sharing)

Messages 7 in Mountain Lion changes the App with the addition of the iMessage account.

Buddy lists are much less prominent due to the interface features of the main window.

So...

Some emails are IDs for the various Services that Mesages or iChat can join.

In some cases they may also be your Apple ID.

That leads to som being both eht iMesages ID and one of the other services IDs as well.

Facebook also run a Jabber server but you have to enlist for chat ID part.

In addition AIM, based on the agreement with Apple and other ISPs allowed you to register any email as an AIM Screen Name - meaning your Google ID could be an AIM Screen name, a valid Jabber ID and possibly your Apple ID as well.

Ralph - I'm absolutely stoked. I checked the fonts on my mid 2007 iMac (the oldest one supported for the Yosemite upgrade) and turned on 2 Apple font families that were off. I turned on iMessages again (I've been doing this for 2 weeks now and read every forum and advice column everywhere and repeatedly tried all suggestions without success) and everything fired up! Next minute the code for my iPhone appeared and now I'm back in business. So grateful - many thanks.
