iPod Classic not recognised by iTunes - Can't sync.

Old iPod Classic has had a world of problems in the past connecting to iTunes. I used have have to reset it every time I wanted to sync it (by holding down Center button and menu button).

Now it won't connect to iTunes at all. It says 'connected' on the iPod but doesn't pop up in iTunes. My MacBook recognises it however, because I can find it in disk utilities. Tried resetting it multiple times, and done all the obvious methods. How can I get this to sync up now?

Updated to iTunes 12 now and it still won't work.

I recently had the same problem, everyone seems to think it's an issue with iTunes v12.2.2 (for mac - Yosemite 10.10.5).

I would plug the device into iTunes nothing, but it would detect in IOS and i can see it was working in finder cos there were folders on the disk.

I tried everything to get my iPod working, i have the iPod 80GB Classic purchased in 2007.

I ejected the device safely and "unsafely" that many times that my ipod was no longer detecting any of the 3000 songs i had on there. ouch...

I read all post comments and feedback to see if i could get it working.

The solution is simple: Wipe your iPod and start again.

I went into Disk Utility (mac) flattened the HDD using mac utilities and treated the iPod as if it was a brand new device.

I plugged it back in and prayed it would detect and it found it. It is now installing the first 1000 songs =) good luck and keep persevering.

Resetting the iPod by holding "Menu" and the centre of the wheel for 15sec while connected and then restoring the iPod from iTunes was a good first step. Then, dismounting, shutting down iTunes and restarting the MacBook did the trick.

Thank you.

I am having a lot of trouble all of the sudden with my iPod classic 160GB. Normally I have no problem plugging in the device and syncing to iTunes. This week I've been experiencing all of the problems outlined in this thread: iTunes not seeing the device, error messages, requests to reset the device to factory settings, etc. All of the files on my iPod have been erased, and my iMac barely recognizes the device. It keeps asking me to restore the device to factory default settings, and then during the process tells me it can't restore the device because it can't see it. I am running OS 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4. PLEASE reach out to me as my Apple products have been rendered useless during this process. I am quite frustrated with this situation, and would be thrilled to know of a solution to the problem.

It's September 2016 and I just had the same experience with my previously flawless 160GB iPod classic. I wanted to add a few tracks and podcasts to the large collection I already have on this iPod. I've never had a problem before doing manual syncs in the past.

Today I tried connecting my iPod classic to my MB Pro 13-inch (circa 2011), which is still running on Mavericks with iTunes 12.5.1.21. For the first time ever, iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod! I have the same experience that others cited here: it shows up on the desktop, but not in iTunes.

Someone added a link to an HT article on corrupt iPods. Let me just say that there's nothing wrong with my iPod. It's not corrupt. There's nothing wrong with the cable -- it's the same cable that I always use. There's nothing wrong with my Mac. I also don't intend to reset my iPod (deleting my entire collection of tracks and podcasts). I don't think I need to start reinstalling software on my Mac.

There's something wrong with iTunes 12. This is an Apple software problem and they haven't fixed something that's been an issue since 2014. This thread is two years old and I see no movement. I know Apple doesn't sell iPod classic anymore, but I can hardly believe that iPod and iTunes are no longer compatible. These products were -- and still are -- key to Apple's success. You can no longer use the slogan "It just works." PLEASE FIX.

Have the same issue.

Ipod classic 30G

ITunes 12.5.2.35

MacBook Pro

Sierra 10.12.1

Ipod shows up on desktop and in list of USB devices but not in iTunes

Swapped cables, tried on another MAC

Only suggestion on Apple website is to disable 3rd party security software

So removed antivirus & security program

Still not visible in iTunes -was working ok before the last set of Apple updates
