iPhoto won't upgrade in Yosemite

I've just updated to OS X Yosemite on my iMac (27-inch, mid 2010 model). I was running 10.6.8 and everything was working fine.

iPhoto is version 9.2.3 and iMovie is version 9.0.4. The App Store won't let me upgrade these apps. I've tried opening from the dock and also the icon in the applications folder. I get the following messages when I try to open iPhoto:

Then when I click on the Search App Store button I get the following message when trying to download the latest version.

What can I do to fix this. I want to be able to access my photos. Thank you.

Thanks for this advice. I had exactly the same problem on my OS 10.6.8 after my son upgraded my OS to Yosemite. I found my photos were still on the hard drive through System Preferences- Desktop and Screensaver, then I uninstalled the old iphoto app by accessing in through the finder and dragging to trash (It wouldn't drag to trash from the Applications folder). I also dragged the iphoto icon from the dock into trash. After this I was able to install the new version of iphoto from the App Store without any problems except I had to upgrade the Library something or other on the way. I didn't lose any photos, although they weren't backed up at all as I didn't know how to do this using System Preferences which was the only way I could access them. Thanks to the advice of several people who posted I have been able to accomplish this near miracle (for a technophobe) by trying our different solutions.

I deleted the application from my computer (didn't lose any photos but I still backed it up with Time Machine first), and went to the app store to re-install it. It took a moment for it to recognize I removed it though. At first it still said "Update" which I wasn't able to do previously, but after a minute or two it changed to "FREE." So I clicked that, it installed, and seems to be working just fine.

Thanks for everyones help!

I tried doing what you all are doing and it still is not working. It opens then says its updating and the bar almost gets to the end then iPhoto freezes. I can't see any of my pictures. Super bummed first problem I've had with apple. I knew I shouldn't have done this update to Yosemite. I've done iOS 8 on my phone and iPad and it has made them both so slow what is going on????

First upgraded my iPad to iOS (slow and jupm's around) then compounded my mistake by upgrading to awful Yosemite on my (year old) iMac. I am a painter so work a lot with iPhoto but the result of the upgrade was the loss of thousands of photos of my work, all my contacts, all emails etc. As I'm rather fearful of doing anything myself I've had to get someone along to help out (he wisely didn't upgrade to Yosemite!) Although he's managed to restore my photos (big sigh of relief) he was unable to replace my contacts on to the new contacts page. I'm having issues sending pics directly through 'email' on iPhoto - they won't 'send' any more so the option to send New Year cards with the formatted frames and message is now impossible - a window opens to say there's a problem with my email connection. Like others I'd like to know what Apple's doing - this is definitely no longer good value for a lot of money! Any ideas someone? I'm not sure I'm brave enough to set up the new app. - too frightened of losing all my photos again!

This thread is only about having problems upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 running under Yosemite

If you are having that problem then read the answers that have solved this for others - if you have a new problem then start a new thread (click on the work "NEW" to the right o the "Apple Support Communities" banner a the top of the page and describe your system and problem and ask you question - a life history and long editorial discusions are not a good idea and make it harder not easier to help you

This is my first post here. Thanks for your assistance

My problem is similar to many of those stated here. I have downloaded the new app. It appears in Purchases in the APP store. When opening the application I am advised it must be updated. I select that option. The library is examined and the upgrade begins. progress bar slowly fill with blue. And

then gets stuck. For hours and hours - like overnight. See screenshot: User uploaded file

I have read many other posts. Yet do not see a solution other than contact Apple. Ideas?

Quit iPhoto and try again.

If that fails:

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
