Website Icons are entirely missing in Safari 8.0

Greetings,

My bookmarks seem to have lost their icons since I have upgraded to Yosemite/Safari Version 8.0 (10600.1.25). Each one had their own icon before the update.

So okay something likely messed up, so I have deleted the WebpageIcons.db as recommended in this thread:

safari website icons gone from my bookmark bar

However that did not accomplish anything. The icons do not reload when I visit a website.

I actually got to like them over time. I don't see why the feature would be unceremoniously abandoned since it probably doesn't require much code.

So... what gives?

Thanks.

chuckdemin: The folder you need to delete is ~/Library/Safari/Touch Icons

I don't know what to tell you Chuck: I have tons of Macs around me at work and it works every time. That is how it is done. What on earth do you mean not available in Yosemite? That folder and "Touch Icons" didn't even EXIST until Yosemite.

You might consider making a test user account to see if the problem exists there. If it does then you should probably do yourself a favor and do a clean install of Yosemite

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO CHOOSE YOUR OWN ICONS FOR ANY BOOKMARK BAR WEBSITE.

(You will need Xcode)

1. Go to Finder, hold "option" (alt) key, click "Go" on the top bar, choose "Library".

2. Go to "Safari" folder, then to "Touch Icons".

3. Open "CacheSettings.plist" file in Xcode.

4. Expand the "Touch Icons" dictionary.

5. In Safari go to "http://onlinemd5.com/".

6. In the second box titled "Generate the hash of the string you input" put the URL (web address) of your bookmark with missing icon, but be sure to put the same address as the one in Xcode (without 'https://' and sometimes without 'www.')

7. Download an image in '.png' of your new bookmark icon.

8. Name it with the output you got from the website above and add '.png'.

9. Move the image to the "Touch Icons" folder.

10. Back in Xcode, expand the dictionary with the web address of your bookmark with missing icon.

11. Turn all the Booleans to "YES".

12. Command + S, Command + Q, quit Safari and when you reopen it all your favourite bookmarks should have icons.

(If your icon has a dark background you can change the "TouchIconTransparencyAnalysisResult" to "2".)

HOPE IT HELPS.
