New iTunes 12, not recognizing device?

I just updated to the new iTunes 12 but whenever I plug in my iPod touch 5 gen to my computer, it doesn't seem to pop up on iTunes. I'm assuming it's because it's not being recognized? When I still had the older version, my iPod did show up on iTunes but I can't seem to get it to show up on the new one. I know that on the new iTunes, the device should show up on the left side of the screen instead of the right side, but it doesn't show up. I've tried restarting the computer and my iPod but it doesn't help. I'd really like to get this thing working as soon as possible, thanks!

Finally, success.

I couldn't connect to my iPhone 5s after updating iTunes either. I read much of this thread and was going to try uninstalling iTunes, etc., as someone suggested. But while in the uninstall control panel, I noticed the repair button at the top of the window and figured it can't hurt to try. I did so and a couple minutes later it was working correctly!! I plugged in the iPhone and it instantly connected and was visible in iTunes. Yea!!

Hi.

Uninstalling everything sounds too risky for me.

But that is Apple's own advice on this type of problem. It is also what you do for other software that hasn't installed correctly. If it won't repair, tear it all down, reboot, and reinstall.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

So I did a number of things discussed here without any luck. What worked for me was to uninstall the three apps as discussed. You do not lose any apps, music or settings. then just re-install itunes and it started to recognize my phone.

One issue I did have was a few days later I noticed that my DVD drive was no longer working. I had also recently upgraded to win 8.1 so I started to try and troubleshoot it that way. One of the questions was recently installed software... iTunes... so I un-installed again and the DVD drive was working. I was worried that I was now going to have to choose between iTunes/iPhone and DVD drive... but to my surprise both worked after re-installing iTunes again.
