New iTunes 12, not recognizing device?

I just updated to the new iTunes 12 but whenever I plug in my iPod touch 5 gen to my computer, it doesn't seem to pop up on iTunes. I'm assuming it's because it's not being recognized? When I still had the older version, my iPod did show up on iTunes but I can't seem to get it to show up on the new one. I know that on the new iTunes, the device should show up on the left side of the screen instead of the right side, but it doesn't show up. I've tried restarting the computer and my iPod but it doesn't help. I'd really like to get this thing working as soon as possible, thanks!

Just solved this with my 2nd gen iPad not being acknowledged by iTunes 12.5.5. (various iPods not ack'ed either)

I'm using Windows 10 up-to-date

Found the solution in Apple knowledge base...sorry, lost link.

Solution: carefully uninstall all components of iTunes...in a very deliberate order...then reinstall iTunes w. a fresh download from the apple.com site.

This also happened to me. When your iPod does shows up in 12, it will show up in the menu bar at the top to the right of Music, Movies, etc.

What fixed the problem and got my iPod to show up is I renamed the Music | iTunes folder to iTunes_old. When I then connected my iPod it remade the directory and I was able to import my stuff from the iTunes_old.

In other words there was something there in Music | iTunes that iTunes 12 didn't like and caused it to not recognize my iPod.

Maybe Apple software is a 'seamless' experience only when all your devices are Apple.
