Links not Working in Safari after Yosemite Upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I have noticed some problems with specific websites (si.com and macworld.com) while using Safari. Since upgrading, clicking on links on either site does nothing. I can right-click and open the link in a new tab, but a direct click causes nothing to happen. After verifying that it was not my installed extensions, I found an old answer that suggested disabling Javascript. Disabling Javascript appeared to resolve the issue.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? If so, were you able to resolve without disabling Javascript? Is this an issue in Safari or something on the websites' side?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi ..

Might be a cookies or cache issue.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.

Click: Remove All Website Data

Then delete the cache.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

same here with NBA league pass

the link to open the game player doesn't work

maybe is because the link is a javascript opening a new tab

i think that the new menu of suggestions that appear on the url field is doing something and stoping the java...

but i can't deactivated that menu to test my theory.

i hope safari guys have more info at this time

Having similar issues and then some with Safari. So frustrating that I had to revert to using Firefox of all things!

I found that on a regular basis the first 2 links on a Google search do not work. Facebook was another problematic site. Using the Office 365 OWA website was practically non-functional with delays in responsiveness from the keyboard.

Extensions enabled:

Evernote

Kaspersky URL advisor

When I disabled Kaspersky URL advisor it seems to have cleared things up. Didn't have any trouble with this until about 3 weeks ago.

As a web developer I've had users recently notify me of this behaviour. After taking a closer look, I suspect this has something to do with how safari handles javascript links. In my case, I am using javascript to post-back to the current page while the anchor tag opens a URL in a new window/tab. This has been working for months, but has stopped in a recent update. It is likely that safari is restricting this sort of behaviour because it can potentially be malicious. This is all just speculation, but the fact that disabling javascript resolves the issue is a pretty big indicator.

not a day goes by since the upgrade that i don't run into a link/button that is unresponsive in safari while things work just fine in google chrome.

for instance, when researching a movie title on "rotten tomatoes" and trying to hit 'read more' in the 'movie info' section: nothing happens. doing the same in chrome: no issues here.

i prefer safari over chrome so this is simply frustrating.

what is going on? it can not be just java related - or can it?

It appears to be caused by something that in theory should be a good thing but in practise is a pain. Lots of websites do not follow best practices when it comes to XSS/mixed content and Safari from V5 started flagging in the error console where mixed content exists but it appears with V6 they went one further and now it automatically just refuses to execute any JavaScript called from insecure URL if the post-back is to a secure URL.

Due to the way pages often rely on JavaScript to display page content and due to the fact when any browser (Chrome/FF included) hits JavaScript that it fails to execute correctly, then all subsequent content (including other JavaScript files) won't be displayed/executed either. So these sites are effectively stalling during the loading process due to the sites themselves using bad practices when fetching/executing JavaScript files.

Unfortunately the only 'solution' is either contact the website and let them know that their site is broken in Safari or use another browser.

Linc,

I've had this issue with Safari on only two sites (but there may be more, of course):

http://www.pewtrusts.org/en

http://www.vox.com

As an aside, this issue happens only on my iMac. When I use the trackpad on my MacBookPro and visit these two sites, Safari works fine--all of the links open on both sites. In addition, I use the Apple Magic Mouse with the iMac, but I have not found the problem on any other sites, so I don't think it's the Bluetooth mouse.

Per your subsequent instructions, I disconnected two external hard drives plugged into my iMac.

Step 1: When I logged in as a Guest user, launched Safari, and went to these two sites, all of the links worked correctly. No problem.

Step 2. When I logged back into my own User account in Safe Mode, the problems with the links on those two sites were still there on the iMac. None of the links on either homepage of those two sites would open.

I restarted the iMac as usual, logged into my User account, and the problems with those two sites still occurred. None of the links on either home page would work.

I also tried the other suggestion noted on this thread and deleted the database in Safari's cache in the User Library. No help on that either.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I too had the problem where a couple of websites would not respond when a javascript button was pushed. They worked in Chrome and in Firefox. I fixed the problem by going into the user library under cache under com.apple.safari and deleting cache.db.

it might be that a recent update did not clear the cache. I have an iMac with safari version is Version 8.0 (10600.1.25.1) OS X version is 10.10.1 (14B25)

Thanks. The issue at hand has been discovered here: I had already deleted the Safari caches and then deleted the databases in the Safari folder in the User Library, but neither step resolved it. So I turned off Javascript (something I've never had to do over the course of 15 years of using Macs) in Safari's preferences, and the pewtrusts site worked fine. All of the links opened. So I guess that means the problem is what Cyberwlf pointed out above--the webmasters who run that site don't have their Javascript settings or code entered correctly. Deleting the databases in Safari's folder in the User Library did resolve the link issue with www.vox.com, however. So I think that's a step to take, in addition to deleting the caches in the User Library. Beyond that, as Cyberwlf noted, you have to contact the site's webmasters and let them know that millions of people who use Safari on Apple computers cannot open links on their website.

For other developers who land here, the issue (for us) is related to an error in browser detection which created a problem with the .NET AJAX Extensions on our site. The info in the follow page resolved the problem for us:

Hope this saves somebody some grey hairs.

Same Error: Brand new MacBook Pro15. This link Numbers '09: Aligning Text Vertically http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10014 and all others that are support.apple.com based will start to load, but no display of any content. Attempt to reload does not work. Copying the link from the Safari URL bar and pasting into the Chrome URL bar works for Chrome.

On Safari for the blank page Numbers '09: Aligning Text Vertically....Opened Develop - Show Page Source Code. No content. At all. Compared that to this page we are on now, which shows lots of HTML content.

Hope these details help with the analysis over at Apple. Since this is a new clean machine and I am going to an Apple Support page to test, I would hope that this eliminates a lot of add-in and 3rd party site speculation.

It looks like Apple is completely ignoring the problem and don’t want to fix it. I have tried Firefox, Chrome and Opera, links that doesn’t work in Safari, works flawlessly in all other browsers. Same links also works fine on my iPad and iPhone so, it looks like an issue with Yosemite.

Since, Apple is methodically ignoring this issue on Mac’s, I have stopped using Safari completely. Also, Safari has become significantly compared to other browsers.
