Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

I am running OS X Yosemite (10.10.1) on my MacBook Air (13-inch,Mid 2012).

Facetime ,Photo Booth and other apps (that can access camera) CAN NOT DETECT CAMERA,shows "There is no connected camera".

Resetting SMC did not help.

System Report > Hardware > Camera - "No video capture devices were found."

And can not find Camera OR iSight under USB as well.

What should I do? Do I reinstall Yosemite OR do I wait for Apple if they are working on fixing this.

PS : Really disappointed with Apple.

Hi Baz As you will see I had the same problem and went through all the suggested steps. Strangely, I found that time was the healer. I just ignored the problem and Camera has been OK for the last few days. I am sure it was caused by the Yosemite upgrade and Apple should check this out. However, leave the computer on and check again later today. Good luck.

You seem to have have tried about everything a user can do to fix any camera software problem.

If you have tried all the suggestions (including testing in more than one user account) from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight support article, and if your Mac still does not recognize your inbuilt camera as a USB device, you most likely have a hardware problem.

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

There are no user serviceable parts of the camera. For hardware help, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service. Unless you have a current backup, make one now. Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion: "... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."

Hi guys, I have the same problem. While Googling around I found an older thread which has the same problem"There is no connected camera"

The most popular solution was to kill a process called "VDCAssistant" from Activity Monitor. It can also be done in Terminal as you will see in the thread.

The problem seems to be that a program is blocking the camera process from being used by other programs. Most of the time it's fixed by restarting you Mac or by killing the "VDCAssistant" process.

NOTE: This solution hasn't worked on Yosemite for me yet (maybe the process has been renamed?) but I thought it might work for some of you guys, good luck!

Hello Daniol71. You may already know this, but ...

For benefit of other readers, the "No connected camera" software problem is not the same as a failure to recognize a connected USB hardware device in a Mac's System Information USB Device Tree. Killing VDCAssistant operation cannot restore a hardware connection.

Hi Jim,

I think you have understood my issue.I cant find Camera under USB Device Tree under Hardware under System Report.

I have tried all suggestions found on the internet :

1.sudo killall VDCAssistant

2.Replacing AppleCamera.plugin

3.SMC Reset

4.Logged in through another user account

BUT the problem persists.

FYI,I had this problem earlier as well(Before Yosemite upgrade). But the problem was solved when I replaced AppleCamera.plugin.

But after Yosemite upgrade nothing seems to help.

Please suggest what do I do?Should I try going back to Maverick or reinstall Yosemite.

You are correct that I do understand, bazz...

You can try either or both. However, if you have already tried all other suggestions already offered here without success, based on your Mac's failure to recognize your inbuilt camera, I doubt that either will help you.

Wohooooo!

It got fixed somehow.Its working.

I did 2 things this morning.I am not sure which process fixed it :

1)Utility>Disk Utility .I performed Verify Disk,Verify Disk Permission,Repair Disk Permission.

Results-

#Verify Disk : "File system check exit code is 0."

#Verify Disk Permission : Lot of lines similar to "User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.”

#Repair Disk Permission : Lines similar to "Repaired “private/var/db/displaypolicyd"."

I had not checked the camera after this process & Then,

2)I ran Apple Hardware Test(AHT).First just the TEST(2 min). Then, EXTENDED TEST(23 min).

I restarted MBA & opened FaceTime , PhotoBooth and BOOM!! the green light was lit and I could see myself on the screen.

Good Luck!
