text message forwarding code note appearing on other device

I just updated my iphone 5s and ipad 4 to 8.1. I go to turn on Text Message Forwarding on my iphone and the iPad is listed. I put the slider to on and a pop up comes up saying to enter the verification code shown on my iPad. No code ever shows on my iPad. I have a few iPads, so to make sure I don't have two iPads named incorrectly, I changed the name of my iPad and the new name appears in the messaging app on the phone under the Text Message Forwarding panel. So it is the right iPad and it sees it, why no verification code?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1, Ipad 4 running iOS 8.1 also

So, it appears as if you have to make sure of the following:

  • Macbook settings > general > check off "allow handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices"
  • imessage on your mac > preferences > accounts > icloud account. Make sure your icloud email address is checked off as an option to send/receive messages.
  • settings on your phone/tab > messages > Send& receive > make sure the same email address is checked off as a send/receive option
  • settings on your phone/tab > messages > text message forwarding.

The code should send if all of these things are turned on. I also had bluetooth turned on during this process and all of my location services related to my messaging were turned on. I had to leave the email addresses checked off in order for it to work, but each device had an option that was like "send new msgs from (phone #) and so it worked from my phone #.

I cannot get any code to appear to sync the two/three. I have signed in and out of imssage on all machines. I have re-booted both iphone and ipad. Any suggestions?
I am able to receive phone calls on all devices and start one doc on mac/ipad and open up on iphone. Pls help!

I don't know where you are seeing 'When Using App'. I have the iPhone 6 and messages is nowhere in the list of location services. Are you sure that you're not seeing that for 'Messenger'? which is the facebook messenger app? Assuming you browse the book of faces.

However, I was finally able to get this to work. I am using a MacBook Pro Retina(Late 2012) and I'm not entirely sure which thing I did to make it work but I will tell you what I have enabled.

I went to privacy-->Location services-->system services(all the way at the bottom), I turned on Wifi Networking. I had it disabled due to wifi issues and it was suggested that I turn it off. I also made sure that Share My Location was enabled. Other than that, I went to settings-->messages--> Send & Receive and made sure one of the email addresses that I can be reached at was my iCloud account. That enabled the "Start New Conversations From" part of the settings to show up, in which I only have my phone # selected. That last part is also the same on my MacBook under preferences for iMessages. And then when it asked me for the code, my messages app at the bottom of my MacBook started bouncing. I clicked it and the code showed up in the iMessage Window.

I was using this thread to help me figure out how to do it too, and stumbled upon a solution for myself. If you are trying on the iPad, I assume a dialog box should pop up with ur number on it, if not, maybe try opening iMessage and just see what happens?

Hope this helps.

Justin,

That solved my problem as well. I have an Early 2011 MBP so it still won't work on that because of the bluetooth version, but as soon as I added my could account email address as a place to receive messages, the pop up occurred on the iPad Air. So I can now send and receive SMS on the iPad Air and Phone.

From my other reading it will never work on my MBP Early 2011 because the bluetooth is not right.

Thanks Justin!

For me, this solved the issue:

In Settings -> Messages only my phone number was checked. All email addresses were unchecked. I activated one of the available email addresses for iMessage and tried to activate text message forwarding again. The code that was requested by the iPhone now immediately showed up on my MacBook. Everything seems to work now. After that, I deactivated the email address in iMessage settings.

Hope this works for you, too

I got the code to show up after reading another thread. I noticed as others had that my phone number wasn't showing on my iPad as a registered imessage address. I disabled and renabled on both devices and I got the message saying the phone number was being added. Once that was added the code showed up.

Now, I can't get the SMS forwarding to work consistantly. I was able to SMS back and forth from the iPad to one of my sons, but when I go to use the contact for anyone else, it shows in red and the send button is disabled. The message when you click on the red address is that this contact is not registered to imessage (just like prior to the sms forwarding). If I put in the phone number directly it matches it to the contact and shows the name in red then also.

Still not working well...

I followed Justin's path and got it to work as well.

What model of Mac do you have? Also there is a setting on Macs Settings-->General-->Allow Handoff Between this Mac and your iCloud Devices. Most articles online point to this first though so it might just be redundant.

EDIT: I had forgotten iPads did the same thing in iMessage. Disregard that post.

EDIT2: I have an iPad but I am letting someone borrow it at the moment so I have no experience with it and handoff yet. I will update if your issue hasn't been solved or if I am actually able to help. Later though😐

I was having the same problem with a MBP Retina 13 and 6 Plus. I tried all of the above and some other things but with no luck. Finally, after disabling and enabling all of my email addresses in iMessage yet again (in both the MPB and iPhone), I suddenly started getting codes displayed and quite a few of them. Having tried enabling it quite a few times already, they'd obviously been queueing up somewhere. After clearing them all, I tried again and it worked. So, no obvious solution for me, other than keep fiddling with settings until it works.

I had similar...not much of the above worked.

I noticed that the phone did not have its number in the "start new conversations from" section of the iMessage settings. I turned off all email address options so the new conversations had to start from the phone number. that option then appeared. it also appeared on the other devices as a notification. after that the codes came through to the other devices. i then re-enabled the email addresses

I had the same problem (iPhone 6, iPad 4th Gen and rMBP mid 2012).

I kept trying all variations, but I think this did it in the end:

1. I quit the Messages app on my iPad and My mac; then

2. I went to 'forward text messages' on my iPhone (in Settings > Messages) and turned it on for my mac.

3. Opened messages on my mac and waited a couple of secs, when the code finally appeared. typed it in my iPhone and it was enabled.

4. Double tapped the home button on my iPad and close the messages app there.

5. Activated the 'forward text messages' on my iPhone to my iPad.

6. I swiped the lock screen on my iPad and the I saw a message with the code.

7. Entered the code on my iPhone

et voila... They are now working on both devices.

Hope this helps.

You have to make sure you are signed on with the same apple ID e-mail on both devices (Mac and phone), either the primary email or the apple id (.me, .icloud, etc), and you have to make sure you have your phone # selected as able to be reached for messages in the Messages account preferences on the Mac.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro with the older BlueTooth and it SMS forwarding works for me, so it does not have to do with the bluetooth version.

Good luck and thank you for your courage.
