text message forwarding code note appearing on other device

I just updated my iphone 5s and ipad 4 to 8.1. I go to turn on Text Message Forwarding on my iphone and the iPad is listed. I put the slider to on and a pop up comes up saying to enter the verification code shown on my iPad. No code ever shows on my iPad. I have a few iPads, so to make sure I don't have two iPads named incorrectly, I changed the name of my iPad and the new name appears in the messaging app on the phone under the Text Message Forwarding panel. So it is the right iPad and it sees it, why no verification code?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1, Ipad 4 running iOS 8.1 also

you have to have your iCloud email enabled in iMessage on both your Mac and iPhone or iPad for sms forwarding to work. It cannot be an alternate email address like AOL. You can choose for all your messages to originate from your cell phone number so you get all your messages on your phone and mac and not just the Mac or iPad which can happen if you have the email address selected at the originating application

Not true, I do NOT have an @icloud.com or @me.com email, my apple id is an @aol.com email and I was able to get mine working using the steps outlined in this thread.

Hi Justin,

Thx for ur tips. As all users have this common issue and I'm no exception. The fact is I did every step which u indicated in this forum, but still the code not showing on my Mac (MacBook Pro, Late 2011). I'm sending a text forwarding message from my iPhone 5 (8.1) and still have a problem.

The thing is, in message app on iPhone setting, imessage is waiting for activation and other hand work well with my mac over wifi only but not send and receive with mac. can this activation causes this problem??

I've had this problem and it resolved itself but I've no idea how/why. I played around with all manner of suggestions from on here and other threads. I am now up and running so I ceremoniously sent some SMS messages from my Mac to my wife's mobile. She received them and she even replied to them, which I picked up on my Mac. So far so good...

I then tried to reply to her reply from my Mac and it failed to send:

"Your message could not be sent

xxxxx xxxxxx is not registered with iMessage"

I know it's not registered with iMessage! I want to send an SMS!

It appears that I can begin an SMS conversation from Messages on my Mac and can receive replies. If I then attempt to reply to that reply it fails.

Disappointing.

[edit] - tried one more time and now it does let me reply to a reply. Flaky

That worked for me too! When I simply chose a different 'address' other than my phone number in order to 'start messages from' on my iPhone Other than my phone number, then the message popped up immediately on my Mac. After I entered the code then the slider switch stayed 'On' for my Mac And then I switched it back to 'start messages from (my phone number)' for my iPhone and everything stayed put.

I had the same problem.. And I found the solution. In my case it was very simple, my iPhone iMessages settings was logged on to my @gmail.com address, and the iCloud on my Mac was on the same iCloud account but it was logged on to the @me.com address, as well as the Messages app in my Mac. I just logged out from the @gmail.com address in my iMessage section in my iPhone and logged on again using the same @me.com address that was on my Mac iCloud and Messages app.

I tried everything and I finally got it to work by going to settings->messages->send & receive-> then go down to the bottom where it says "START NEW CONVERSATIONS FROM" and select whatever email account your iCloud is associated with. Also make sure that the email address is checked above that where is says "YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT"

Many thanks to all, but I've found the ultimate solution that is a simple two steps... take Macbook, toss out 10th story window.

In all seriousness, I tried every step multiple times to no avail. I finally did the fix IT always recommended in 1995 - reboot. I restarted my Mac and after getting an error that Messages needed to close when the Mac was getting restarted, I received about 15 codes that had been piling up. I cancelled them, re-initiated the "Forward Text..." on my iPhone and the code appeared.

Thanks Justin!! This was very helpful two years later.

I wasn't able to forward text messages from the iPhone 7 to an iPad or MacBook; after going through the steps you indicated, it finally works!! It turned out to be that iMessages didn't activate correctly, so my phone number wasn't showing in the send/receive and start new conversation sections within iMessage settings. It activated ok after two tries, not sure why it had been failing - maybe an Apple issue or T-Mobile, who knows. I'm just happy it works again, thanks for your post!!
