AirDrop Problems in iOS 8.1

I just installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5s. When I try to turn on AirDrop for Contacts Only using the Control Center it either does not try to turn on or just asks for my iCloud password and then does nothing (i.e. stays turned off). If I select AirDrop for Everyone it sometimes turns on and sometimes does not.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Guys,

Same issue here - Macbook Pro mid 2013(OSX 10) iPad mini Retina + iPhone 5s (ios8.1).

Made the following steps:

1. logout from the icloud on all devices

2. restart all devices

3. login back to icloud

4. still the ios devices doesn't see the macbook - on macbook can see and can transfer the files to ios devices. between ios devices can transfer with no issue.

hope to have some solution 🙂

Cheers guys

Hello all,

Just spent 20 minutes with apple support trying lots of things (reset network, etc).

So it works for me in the 2 way now, here is what we done.

On my mac, I delogged from icloud (system settings > Icloud) AND App Store (be sure that's the same Apple ID)

On my Iphone, I delogged from Icloud and App Store too

I reboot the 2 devices

I logged in Icloud on the mac (system settings > Icloud)

I logged in App Store on the mac

I logged in Icloud and App Store on my Iphone

I reboot

And now it works... I succed in sending a picture from my Iphone 6 to my mac (late 2012). The icon of my mac appears in my iPhone Air Drop...

Air Drop is set to everybody!

Hope its works for you too,

keep in touch

My case is a bit different, but just sharing in case someone has this similar problem.

My problem was using airdrop between iPhone 5 iOS 8.1 and MBA 2014 (OS 10.10/Yosemite). At first, my MBA can detect the iPhone, but iPhone can't detect the MBA. I troubleshoot and conclude it's the iPhone's faulty bc both my MBA and iPad air can detect each other, or even the iPhone itself w/ airdrop, but iPhone can't detect both of em. The simple solution I found is simply by restarting the iPhone (turning off and on). Now my iPhone can detect my MBA & vice versa, and it just recently successful on transferring file.

Here is an update.

I got an iPad Air 2 yesterday. I upgraded from my iPad 3, which does not have AirDrop capability. After the restore from iCloud backup I tried to enable AirDrop for contacts only on the iPad Air 2. No luck. It will only enable for "everyone". I still have not able to actually get AirDrop to work between my iPhone 5s and iPad 2.

Hopefully this is fixed soon.

I have the same problem with airdrop. iPhone 6 with ios8.1 Macbook pro(early 2013) with 10.10. The phone shows up on the macbook and a simple drag and drop sends a picture to the phone and into photo collections, all very simple. BUT the macbook does not show up in the iPhone 6 airdrop and I can not use this method to transfer photos from the phone to the macbook. 😢😕😠

A COMMON MISTAKE

For those who are having trouble viewing your OS X Yosemite from your iOS 8 via Airdrop. A common mistake that everyone made is probably to leave your "Allow me to be discovered by:" as "Contacts Only" on OSX. Change it to "Everyone" and it will show up!

I was rebooting my phone and PC constantly, to figure out whats wrong, a small switch and viola, it works.

Note: This is only for those who haven't done it the right way.

Similar issue here, two different problems...

Problem 1

At work I have a Mac Pro running Yosemite 10.10 and iPhone 5 running iOS8.1, one cannot see the other, very annoying, WiFi is on, Bluetooth is on. I then tried on a new iMac in the office, again running Yosemite 10.10 and it sees my iPhone, is it an issue with the Mac Pro I'm wondering? Bluetooth works as I'm using a Magic Mouse. Hmmm.

Problem 2

I have an iMac (couple of years old) at home also running Yosemite 10.10, I don't even see the option for AirDrop, it's not in my finder window like on my work Mac Pro and when I go to System Prefs > Extensions > Share Menu > AirDrop is selected but greyed out in the menu.

Very frustrating, would love it to work seamlessly! Any one have any ideas or is it a bug that needs fixing by Apple?!?

I also had the same problem where I can airdrop to my iPhone 5 (8.1) from my MacBook Pro Retina 2012 (10.10) but not the other way around.

I had tried everything in the threads but the thing that fixed it for me was to sign out from iCloud AND iTunes store on both Mac and iPhone, then restart. My iCloud and iTunes accounts also have different IDs.

I've also found that when using handoff and continuity, if your Mac is sleeping, DON't tap on handoff on your iPhone! It will mess up the settings and you will need to sign out of iCloud on both devices and sign back in again.

MMy iphone6 and my ipad4 retina are both running iOS 8.1 and as long as I use "Everyone" I can send pictures back and forth. Doesn't seem tomwantbto work if I don't select everyone. Thats problem number one.

problem number 2 is that my wife's ipad2 running iOS 8.1 doesn't show the airdrop selection at all. Bluetooth is on, everything else seems to be working fine. I powered it down, waited a couple minutes, powered it up again, still not showing the airdrop selection in the grey menu That you slide up. Seems to me it might be smoother if there was a selection in "General" that actually switched this feature on and off.

incidentally, we both have iMacs hers is brand new, mine is circa 2008 but both are running Yosemite. Haven't even tried sending pix to the iMacs. Just sitting here at the kitchen table with the iOS devivices wondering why her iPad won't cooperate.

ANyone have some idea why her iPad doesn't have AirDrop?
