FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), FaceTime, audio, sound, clicking

YOU HAVE TO FIX THIS. I almost thought of having the “I am leaving you” conversation with my girlfriend thinking she was getting pounded by someone else while we were on FaceTime. WHY IS THIS ISSUE A THING!!!

Just posting an update to my original post (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6613807?answerId=28279586022#28279586022).I just bought brand new maxxed Retina Macbook Pro 15" and I experience the popping sound with the following additional configurations:

Retina MacBook Pro (Mid-2015) - 10.10.5 (current public release)

  • Using Thunderbolt Display speaker
  • Using Bowers and Wilkins MM-1
  • Using Beats Solo2 Headphones
  • Using Bose QC 20 Earphones

Similar issue here. It's almost like a random popping noise - like a when a speaker is connected poorly and experiences pops or "clicks". Like what you would expect from a loose wire or something....

I can hear the person on the line fine (except the clicking noises), and they can hear me. Made two attempts at the same FaceTime call (video), first one we both could hear the clicks, second call they could not but I certainly could.

For reference, I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 13". 4GB RAM, 750 GB HD. Running latest OS (Yosemite). Absolutely zero hardware modifications.

Hopefully this gets addressed in an update soon....

I know this isn't going to "help" but... I have a late 2008 MBPro and have experienced this very IN-frequently over the last few OS releases since Lion (I think). Usually strange stuff like plugging in headphones and unplugging them, or hitting the volume keys, or going to System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects and double-clicking on of the alerts did the trick. Sometimes resetting. This time (in 10.10.1) NOTHING worked. Literally anything I tried in this thread yielded no results. Yet, NOTHING as in "nothing" suddenly worked. My FaceTime audio worked without a hitch while looking up the issue. Macs don't screw up like Windows. No. When Macs screw up they screw up like some prankster. You lovable little b@stard you. Still, I'm glad I don't have to check for the dreaded "conflicting extensions" - anyone remember those circa the early '90's ~ System 6, 7, and 8?

If you are affected by this issue as I am, I strongly recommend sending detailed feedback to Apple.

It does not appear to be not affecting all Macs but merely some. I recommend mentioning the vintage (e.g. year/make/model) of your Mac when submitting feedback.

The "popping" noise on the right speaker does not happen with FaceTime on my wife's retired Late '09 Unibody White Macbook. I've tried replicating the issue for days and FaceTime works fine, handoff works fine too.

However, only my nearly 2 years younger Early '11 MacBook Pro makes the popping noise consistently when making any outbound call; Handoff iPhone calls outbound or regular Mac-to-Mac FaceTime calls. Skype and Google Hangouts (Chrome) do not replicate the issue; Google Hangouts via Skype (Hangouts Plugin) does, at times, replicate the issue.

PRAM reset does nothing but SMC reset does fix it temporarily.

My guess is a bug, one that likely affects specific audio chipsets.

I'm having the EXACT same issue on my Early 2011 - just tried FaceTime for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite on a new SSD. I'm on 10.10.1. I just submitted it as a problem here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html I think we all need to submit these so that the OS X Team hear us.

Seems that Apple is aware of this problem. I filled a Bug Report (https://bugreport.apple.com/) 2 weeks ago regarding this problem on OS X 10.10.1 and they just closed that as a duplicate of #18870638, which is still opened. So, that means they acknowledge the problem and are somehow fixing it 🙂

I've been following this discussion for some time now and because of Apple's protracted fix response time, I felt the need to provide some additional insights:

  • I have a late 2011 15" MBP with the call handoff crackeling/popping noise (and since OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 updates, I now have a crashing OS X contacts app--more on that later).
  • At least one reply included the fact that the poster had contacted Apple tech support and learned Apple new nothing of the call handoff crackeling/popping issue. Well, my comment to Apple is I hope you're reading/skimming/filtering these user discussions--this may be the main reason why you're not aware of this very irritating and feature debilitating issue. Making proper strategic use of this information would enabled you to hedge off the length of this discussion and provide a proper fix sooner.
  • Unfortunately, none of the prior proposed work-arounds continue to eliminate the issue (not a reflection on those very helpful suggestions, but more of a reflection that Apple needs to step up more quickly and get this feature working correctly for all supported devices).
  • I was really hopeful that OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 were the ticket for fixing this issue, however, the crackeling/popping issue remains. And, now I'm experiencing an added measure of workflow failure: Now, EVERY time I perform a handoff call from my OS X Contacts app (clicking on blue handset icon), not only do I still get the crackeling/popping noise, but I now have the added bonus of my OS X Contacts app unexpectedly quitting (one has to question Apple's testing suite and procedures). Oh, one important (and possibly helpful) tidbit of information: My OS X Contacts app accesses my contacts on an Exchange server (EWS) at my i-net service provider. Also, prior to OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 I experienced the crackeling/popping noise, but my OS X Contacts app never unexpectely quit (not sure we're making progress in the right direction).
  • Here's and interesting observation: Occasionally, after I've disconnected my MPB from my two external displays and take it on the road, upon my return, the crackeling/popping disappears. However, I have noticed the crackeling/popping always comes back upon a restart.
  • So, Apple I hope you're reading these discussions because their chock full of valuable data that can help you finally provide a proper handoff call feature to those of us with slightly older Yosemite-supported Mac devices.

I still have this issue on all of my Macs:

  • Macbook Air (Mid-2012) - 10.10.4 (current dev beta as of this post)
    • Using internal speaker
    • Using Thunderbolt Display speaker
    • Using Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Air via USB and 3.5mm
  • Mac Pro (the trash can one) - 10.10.3 (current public release)
    • Using Thunderbolt Display speaker
    • Using Bowers and Wilkins MM-1
  • iMac (late 2014) - 10.10.4 (current dev beta as of this post)

    Using internal speakers

Pretty sad. I filed radars about this in the first dev bata of Yosemite. Still no reply from Apple and still no fix.

I'm having this issue as well. Early 2011 13" MBP. For me, I've found that the issue occurs after removing headphones. Restarts don't seem to fix it. For now, I've found that resetting the core audio daemon fixes the problem. To do this, first close FaceTime, then open terminal and enter:

sudo killall coreaudiod

Enter your password (it won't show up) and hit enter. Then wait a minute. Sometimes it takes a few attempts but it has been fixing it for me. However, once I use headphones with FaceTime and then remove them again, the audio screws up again (requiring me to run this code - I just made an AppleScript for it actually).

(Of course) same here.

I've found a (temp ) solution... : you launch music via iTunes and set sound as mute (in iTunes, not via the finder bar or keyboard)...

Last thing : no problem if headsets are connected (using both jack cable or bluetooth)
